Is Tokyo in good condition now?

Question:

I'm going to Japan and I was wondering if conditions are okay in Tokyo...

I know the earthquake and tsunami didn't affect Tokyo that much, but I want to make sure it's still a good place to go sightseeing.

Thanks! :)

Answer:

Tokyo is fine and basically always has been. But in my opinion, you should be looking at Osaka/Kyoto/Nara for your trip. Tokyo is a concrete jungle compared to the Kansai area.

I want to go to japan but i have no money!?

Question:

I would like to go as an exchange student even just for the summer and experience japanese highschool... but even for 2 weeks on vacation would be nice but my parents say even this is too expensive I have been learning japanese for two years now! I am VERY serious about learning the language and speak in japanese to japanese friends on skype often! 60% of everything i do is related to japanese....like you dont understand it literrally is.
I think i deserve to go to japan because i am not like other people who want to go to japan. I actually like it for a genuine reason... So is there any way for me to go to japan before i graduate highschool? Its really important for me to experience it from a teenagers perspective

Answer:

It doesn't matter what you think you "deserve". No money, no trip to Japan. You don't get anything in life because you want it. You get it by earning it.

If you are as serious as you claim to be, then why are you not applying for an exchange program? Why aren't you working summer jobs and saving up?

Question about Blythe Dolls?

Question:

Is every blythe doll like 100$'s? Are there any cheaper...like around 20$? I dont know..... that just seems like alot of money for a doll!

Answer:

Blythe Dolls are indeed expensive, but you'll find it difficult to purchase one at a cheaper price. This is for a number of reasons:

- They aren't licensed to be sold in the US, so finding a good deal is very difficult.
- International shipping is expensive.
- Sellers know that a lot of money can be made by selling the dolls overseas, so it is good business sense to mark the price up.

The best thing you can do, if you really want to buy one is to preserve your money for a while and do your research. See what's available and who can offer you the best value. Make sure that you're buying the right doll for you before you part with your money. See the doll as an investment and don't buy one until you're sure you'll be completely happy with it.

Does Japan have Whale War shows too?

Question:

Does Japan have their point of view of Whale Wars? I mean as in a show? If they do, does anyone know what their show is called

Answer:

Never seen one. Never heard any discussion of the matter. Never seen anyone order whale. Never seen anyone eat whale.

You hear about all this stuff from rabid anti-whalers who seem to LOVE this forum.

@Yoda.... Yeah, a farmer from Alabama might shot you just for being on his land, much less messing with his pigs.

How much of Japan was hit by the tsunami?

Question:

I was looking on the web about some hologram pop star and the article read about there being countless concerts sold out in Japan. That has me wondering what was hit by the tsunami 'cause I'm thinking all of Japan got knocked out, so if you can clarify this for me please. ; p

Answer:

I was visiting my military uncle at a base close to Tokyo at the time of the tsunami, and we weren't affected by it at all. We felt the earthquake a little bit (before the tsunami took place) but it didn't do any damage. It was actually surprising going home and seeing what was going on in the news. There was a lot of damage done in the area that it took place, but for the most part the rest of Japan was unaffected. I know that after I left there was a lot of worry about radiation, but I think that there's not as much concern now. We can thank the media for making it seem like Japan was blown off the face of the Earth. :)

What is the earliest train to Tokyo?

Question:

I just arrived in Japan yesterday and I'm going to Tokyo Dome tomorrow to buy some Arashi concert goods. The sale starts at 7:00 AM, but obviously I need to go earlier so I won't have to line up as long. I want to arrive there at around 5:30 AM, but I don't know what the earliest train is. I am going from Kitanarashino...someone please help!?

Thanks~

Answer:

You may use Google map or Yahoo! Japan ROSEN service.
Google tells the earliest one is :
1. Kitanarashino 5:32 (Toyokosoku-line) -> Iidabashi 6:22
2. Iidabashi 6:29 (Tokyo Metro Nanboku-line) -> Korakuen : 6:32
3. Korakuen (Walking) -> Tokyo Dome
Probably you can see Tokyo Dome from Korakuen station.

JR Suidobashi and Metro Korakuen are near from Tokyo Dome.
Can you get to Tsudanuma somehow?
It takes about 1 hour by walk.

From Tsudanuma, 4:46 Soubu line -> Ochanomizu 5:22
Ocahnomizu 5:23 -> Suidoubashi 5:25

What does this mean? (japanese)?

Question:

Is the Japanese diet cheaper then the average american diet?

Question:

i was thinking about switching the expensive american diet to a cheaper japanese diet with a rice foundation

Answer:

It is difficult to say. The traditional Japanese diet does consist of rice, fish and vegetables, with small amounts of meat. However, many Japanese households will buy fresh food very frequently. This is not often the practise in the West - we like to freeze a lot of things and use a lot of processed vegetables.

If you can find an Asian supermarket nearby, it is possible that you can buy large bags of rice, tofu and fresh vegetables at a good price. However, unless you find a very cheaply priced fish market, you probably won't save any money there.

I would advise coming up with a basic menu for the week, doing the shopping that you need and seeing how the overall cost measures up with your normal bill. If cost is the most important thing for you, it might be better not to limit yourself to a Japanese-style diet, but look for ways to eat more cheaply within the USA. This will help your wallet and give you a more diverse diet.

Providing that you eat simple Japanese food, it should be fairly inexpensive, but be careful about buying Asian ingredients in standard supermarkets for this diet plan - they can be overpriced.

Question for Japanese Citizens?

Question:

Would you support a Tokyo 2020 Olympic bid for the summer games in 2020? Or would you oppose it and prefer the Japanese government to spend money on more important issues like the recent earthquake? The bid committee argues that a bid from Tokyo would aid in Japan's reconstruction. It would also be Tokyo's 2nd Olympic games since 1964 and it's 2nd bid since bidding for the 2016 games where it lost to Rio.

http://www.businessweek.com/ap/financial…

Answer:

Olympic is good for the economy.
They should spend money on it for their own good.

For a flight to japan?

Question:

i am planning on going over to kyoto, japan this december, and i have some questions related to the travel.
What airline should i use? (i will depart from San Diego international airport).

when should i make reservation for the flight?

is there an international airport at kyoto, japan?

how much would the round ticket to japan cost?

and any other information that i must know prior to making a reservation?

i will be looking forward for some good answers, thank you :)

Answer:

The nearest international airport to Kyoto is Kansai International in Osaka Bay.
As for your other questions, book the flight no later than a month before your departure date as after that prices will rise the nearer the departure. The airline is irrelevant, just go for the cheapest ticket. The cost of the ticket varies, December is not a cheap time to travel.

I'm kenyan,29yrs old,mechanic.can i get mechanical job at japan?.?

Question:

Answer:

You have to know that Japan is in the middle of the worst recession since WW2 now.

I'm looking to go to senmon gakkou in japan and I need some advice on jobs.?

Question:

I am a white male American with a bachelor's degree. I lived in Tokyo before and speak Japanese and have friends there so I don't need any advice on that stuff.

My issue is that I will be a full time student and I will need to work and make money to support myself. Tuition, I can take care of with loans and scholarships. Even housing, if I dorm, can be lumped into tuition fees and deferred until after graduation. But still I will need money just to get by and to save, of course. I have heard that you can get special permission to work up to 28 hours a week on a student visa. what is involved in that and what sorts of places could I work at if I did that? The other option I have heard is getting a working visa as an English teacher and then after I'm already in Japan I could enroll at the school I want to go to. I'm not sure that is a wise idea because full time work and full time student might be something beyond what I can handle. To be honest I don't really want to teach English but of course I will if I have to. It's obviously the easiest job for foreigners in Japan to get. I just think having a full-time job would take away my focus from my studies and defeat the purpose of going.

Thanks for your advice!

Answer:

I don't get your question well. But,

>what is involved in that and what sorts of places could I work at if I did that?

You are allowed to have part-time jobs if you are on student visa. The common part-time jobs are like convenience store or hamburger shop.

Are there any places in Japan completely untouched by modern culture?

Question:

Everywhere in Japan seems to be too westernized, buildings, fashion, tv, etc, even in places like Kyoto, but are there any places completely preserved and untouched from modernization? No electricity, no cars, etc, just wooden architecture, paper doors, kimonos, etc.

Answer:

No electricity is impossible.

But Taketomi jima is nice place.
Few modern cars (lots bicycle for tourist though), few concrete made establishments and no asphalt roads.

Japanese names and Kanji?

Question:

Alright in another question someone explained to me how Kanji works..
And how it works with names, but I still don't really get it. Two persons in my book are called Naoki and Hiroto (they're boys)

Naoki means Honest Tree.. So does that mean that you have to write it like this:
直 (nao) "honest, straight" and 樹 (ki) "tree"?
Hiroto means Big Flight: 大 (hiro) "large, great" and 翔 (to) "soar, fly"?

Or can you do it different? Many people say there are many ways to write it, and I get why (see my other question and the very good explanation) but then how do you explain how you write your name? Cuz here in the netherlands it's like: Hi i'm Margreet.. and people react with: Oh alright.. with a H on the end or not? And then I'll tell them it's not. Or I'll spell it out for them. But that's not possible with Naoki en Hiroto right?

BTW do you ALWAYS write your name in Kanji or sometimes also in western letters?

Thanks!

Answer:

Japanese names are the most difficult to understand (to explain) because there are so many ways to write one name. Even for Japanese, sometimes, it is hard to guess the kanji from the sound of the name or guess how to read it just looking at the kanji.
When we name a child, we usually choose name first, then decide which kanji to use it. Sometimes, kanji are chosen because of the sound matches the name, not always the meaning of the kanji itself. Also, kanji are chosen by the sound and the number of strokes to write(kakusuu画数) by superstitious reasons.
We often explain which kanji by referring simple common words, just like "V as in Victory".
So, if my name was Naoki. I would explain (to Japanese) like "kanji for Nao is Jiki in Sho-jiki正直(Honest), and jyu as in jyumoku(樹木)”
Although mine is very common Japanese name, the Kanji for my name is very rare, so I often have to write it down to explain. Most of Japanese people cannot read it. Thanks to the scholar who named me when I was born.
When we write official papers or documents, we always use Kanji unless your legal name has to be written in Hiragana (or Katakana). We use western letters if we are writing to the people outside Japan.
I hope this help.

Answer:

Majority of Universities in Japan offer their degree courses in Japanese only. There are some courses that are offered in English, but they are mainly International Relations or International Business courses.

Even if you wish to such courses, you will have to sit for the University's Entrance Examination which is in Japanese, like everyone else. No special treatment there unless the University itself has other arrangements.

Some universities that I can think of which do not require international students to sit for entrance examinations are:

Sophia University

Temple University, Japan Campus

Is teenage violence normal in Japanese culture?

Question:

Right now I am an exchange student in Japan and everything is well, different. Yeah I know Japan is more traditional than say, other western countires having grown up in South Africa and then moving to New Zealand Iam quite capable of understanding both types.

So, one day I was at high school and this girl was having an argument with her bf. Pretty weird as people don't tend to do that here. So they dissapear and later reappear. His shoving her by her neck forward. She breaks away and falls against the wall. He comes at her again snatches her phone from her and with his free hand hits her over the head. I am standing in a crowded room with about 40 people. Boys and girls. No one notices and those that do, pretend not to. Now, Iam staring and waiting, looking for someone to do something.

He comes at her again chokes her, realises that they're in view of everyone else. He shoves her into the bathroom and she falls. I can see her legs sticking out in the corridoor. He starts kicking her. By now Iam expecting someone to stop him, no one does anything. I step forward but hold back thinking me being a girl myself who's to say he won't do the same to me and then what? What if no one stops him, what if no one helps me? So to my complete shame I stand and watch as he lands a few more kicks, turns toward the crowd to see of anyone will say anything, no one makes eye contact. I hold my gaze but as he comes near me I lower it. WTF is wrong with me? The girl gets up, she's ashamed, not crying but humiliated as she runs after him like a guilty child.

This stayed with me. I being the independant person that I am I cannot pathom anyone allowing that. And at her age as well, 17 years old. And I let it happen. For all my strength and self assuredness I experienced for this first time what it's like to be held back, quiet for being a girl. If it were New Zealand or South Africa I could open my mouth and say what I want and if he wanted to take a swing at me, no one would allow it. So, is this normal in Japanese culture? I can't get over it. Iam just as bad as he is because I watched, I watched him kick her while she was down. Like she were nothing.

Answer:

It's not normal. Personally, I have not seen it. Nor have I kicked a girl.

One possibility is that he's a sort of boss there whom everyone is scared of. But I'm not sure.

Is Japan/Tokyo a really nice place or something?

Question:

I figured since I see a considerable number of questions in the language section on the Japanese language. And I also read a few people's questions in which they seemingly describe Japan/Tokyo to be a place of interest.

Answer:

Tokyo is a good place for working.
It is a really big city, and has a lot of different faces.
If you visit only Shinjuku or Shibuya, it looks like a crowded concrete jungle.
But if you come to Kichijoji or Kagurazaka, you will have different feelings.
If you go to Asakusa, you will know "Japanese culture".
if you see Akihabara, you can see Otaku culture.
Tokyo has everything. So I think you can find something interesting, if you want.

Actually I love Kyoto and Nara much more than Tokyo.
# I have lived inKyoto for 3years, in Osaka for 1 year.
And I 'd like to move to Hokkaido or Okinawa, if I have a chance.
But I love Nishiogi where I'm living now.

Do I have to wear socks with flip flops in Japan?

Question:

I'm going to Japan in September and normally during that time in the US I would wear flip flops 24/7. I understand that it is culturally customary in Japan to remove shoes in temples, someones home, etc. Can I wear flip flops and no socks? Or must every outing be worn with socks - including summer sandals? I guess the more appropriate answer is if its ever ok to go barefoot in Japan.

Answer:

It's OK to walk without socks when you are wearing sandals.

International shipping to Japan?

Question:

does anyone know any online apparel shopping sites that includes Japan in its international shipping option.
I love Pacsun and JCPenny and the like but they don't ship to japan...);

Answer:

Do you know anyone who lives in the States that could forward purchases to you? I've found that most online places really rip you off on international shipping costs. I've found it cheaper to have the items sent to a friends house and then forwarded to me here in Japan.

I know this doesn't immediately solve your problem, but if you can find someone it will sure make it a lot easier to get the things you want as it will open up a lot more stores to you.

Is Rykitsu a real Japanese name?

Question:

i usually go by rykitsu because of my character rykitsu in deviantart.com.
this name was given to me by a friend of mine, but i have no idea the meaning or if its a real name
can someone tell me what the name means or if its real?
i tried looking all over the internet but cant find it

ry ki tsu
"ry" is missing vowel, so it doesn't make sense as Japanese.

probably, it's
"ryu u ki tsu"(りゅうきつ)
which still doesn't make sense as a name.

possible name is "ryu u ki ti"(りゅうきち or 竜吉)
which still a rare name.

くれる、あげる、さしあげる、やる、くださる、もらう、いただく…

Question:

Can somebody please use each of these words in a simple sentence, or explain to me what the differences are? It's really confusing for an English speaker...

Answer:

友達に本をあげる I give a book to my friend. (neutral)
お世話になった方へ本をさしあげる I give a book to people that really helped me. (to superior)

this means, how do you do, please take care of me, I'll do the best I can do,
all combined.

so, when you introduce yourself, you can say
"watasi no namae ha ....... desu.
yorosiku onegaisimasu."
(my name is ........., yorosiku onegai simasu)

Has anyone done the JET program or know about it?

Question:

I'm only 16 so this doesn't really apply to me yet but when I finish uni I want to do the JET program for a year. I'm really interested in japan and I'm learning Japanese at gcse level at the moment but I was thinking about moving to japan when I am older, but I want to have an experience living there in case I change my mind. I heard that you have to get a special degree to apply for it, also if anyone has done it can you tell me about your experience :-)

Answer:

You a Bachelor's degree/4-year degree (or whatever the equivalent would be in your education system) to apply for JET. The topic of your degree is absolutely not important for JET -- I have a degree in anthropology and my JET orientation session was filled with people with degrees in Asian studies, computer science, biology....you name it, someone there probably had it. You do not need to speak Japanese for JET, but I do recommend that you keep learning because it will make your daily life easier. You should also check your country's official JET Program website for more information on what you would need to do to apply for JET.

It is very difficult for foreigners in Japan to find jobs outside of English teaching. For the majority of jobs, you will need to speak Japanese fluently and be able to offer something a native Japanese applicant can't offer.
