Question:

Hey there,
It's getting mighty hot in Japan right now and I need to get my body in some water. I heard Zushi has a nice beach. The only problem is I have no idea how to get the Yokosuka line from Odakyu Sagamihara.
Could someone please so kind as to give me some directions? Also, any other nice beaches near by?
Thanks in advance.

Does Japan have a child restriction?

Question:

I am taking an online class and I have to post discussions:

Discussion 1 Dina: I believe the main reason is to stay healthy. They have access to any primary care physician or specialist they want and they are almost always seen on the day they want. A patient can see any doctor for specialized services without a referral from a primary doctor. Japan is said to have the highest average life expectancy in the world.

My Response: I did not know that Japan did that, thank you for providing us with these interesting facts! When I was reading your post, I was thinking why does the US not do something like that. Just think if everyone in the US had free access to a physician than there would be many more healthy people. I think that when it comes to taking care of people, the US health care system is not that good, especially if your are a person without health insurance. There is times when I go to the doctor and it is an in and out visit and the bill is expensive and those expenses are putting a hole in my wallet. This reminds me of an elder Colorado man that I heard of who has diabetes and his insurance was refusing to cover any of his medical bills so he decided to go rob a bank and get caught in order to be taken to prison, that ways he would get proper health care. It is sad that US citizens have to resort to a life of crime in order to receive better health care in prison. With that said, I think it is a very good thing that Japan at least provides its citizens with free physicians. I also like the fact that Japanese citizens do not need the use of referrals to see other doctors, because that whole process can be a pain in the neck. I know that I have an irregular heart beat, but I know I will not be able to see a cardiologist unless me physician refers me to one. In other words, I think it is awesome that Japanese citizens have the privilege to take care of their health care concerns when they feel they need to be taken care of.

My teacher's Response to my response: Hello Azucena: Good discussion, but remember there is a limitation on having children. Would you like the government to tell you how many children you are to have, and abortion is the answer if you go over the certain number. Also, one of the major problems in Japan, is that there are too many men and not enough women. Devin ;))

I would like to say that my teacher is confused and that this all goes on in China, but I want to get my facts straight before I respond to anything.

Answer:

Let me guess, you go to school in the U.S., right? I guess they have started a "No Teacher Left Behind" program similar to the "No Child Left Behind" brainchild of George W. Results in nobody being left behind and a lot of idiots both receiving and giving out diplomas.

Japan doesn't have such a one child policy. Walk up to your teacher and tell him/her that they are a moron and have their facts wrong.

EDIT: Have worked with such moronic teachers. I was giving the state proficiency test once and the drivers ed teacher was proctoring the test. He came up and said he had found a mistake on the test. Say what? You should have heard the garbage posing as mathematical understanding pouring from this poor creature's mouth. Turned out he couldn't handle simple fractions and percentages. Maybe your teacher knows him.

EDIT: The teacher had some convoluted reasoning like this.

Q: What is 1/3 of 24?

a) 3 b) 6 c) 8 d) 10

The teacher went through some strange ritual came up with the answer of "5" and declared b) the answer because that was close enough or the closest or some such nonsense. He THEN said, "But that isn't the problem.!" (I'm thinking, you're damned right that isn't the problem, but let's see where this goes.)

The teacher THEN goes on to another problem, exactly the same but with different numbers. This time, however, his convoluted reasoning produces an answer that isn't 'close' to one of the answers, and he then triumphantly declared that the question was wrong.

The sad thing? I was teaching Adv Chem, AP Chem and AP Physics but happened to have about the same number of years of experience as this goofball teaching drivers ed. So we made basically the same salary. This little story plays a leading role in explaining why I moved to Japan.

@ RealAnswers...... The teacher is not simply 'incorrect'. It would be incorrect to assume that because lightning has struck a given place once it will not do so again, when in fact it is exactly the opposite. Teachers must be held to higher standards and there should be a strict prohibition on teachers speaking out of their anal orifices. This comment borders on the ridiculous so as to be on a par with proposing that at the heart of every black hole in the universe there is a little man with a flashlight running around looking for a breaker.

How do Japanese characters work?

Question:

I know the question sounds pretty stupid, haha,
But I know Korean works like:
ㅂ= p/b
ㅁ= m
ㅅ= s
etc
so is Japanese kind of the same?

Answer:

Whether you are dealing with kanji, hiragana or katakana there is a phonetic sound associated with each character. With kanji there may be 3 or 4 phonetic possibilities. With the exception of ん, all the pronunciations end in vowel sounds. This makes turning a foreign word into something that can be almost unrecognizable. And when pronounced with the correct native pronunciation, the word is quite often unrecognizable to the Japanese. For instance, McDonalds. At least for kids learning English, they are totally clueless when you use the American pronunciation.

Question:

I currently live in the U.S. (more accurately Minnesota) and its been my dream to move to japan and live there. In order for me to do that is becoming a citizen the only way i dont understand the difference between resideing in japan or becoming a citizen and do i have to be a citizen to work there?

Answer:

You don't need to be a citizen to work in Japan. You have to work there first. To work there you need a work visa. To get the work visa you need a four year degree and a job offer before you get there.
You can stay up to 90 days without a visa. And up to 180 days in a 12 month period.
If you have a degree ( BA / BS ) , yes, it's possible.

Do Japanese people think they look like Chinese and Koreans?

Question:

in the west, if you're American, Canadian, English, or whatever, there might be differences in cultures but they still act like they have something in common for being white.
Is this the same with East Asians? Do they feel more in common with each other because of the similarities in their looks? Or do they think they don't look like each other?

Answer:

Very discriminative but honest feeling of many Japanese people is that they are superior to China and Korea in terms of moral, manner in public, fashion, intelligence and other things. To Japanese people, 'You look like Chinese or Korean' usually has negative implication, although they may look similar from the viewpoint of western people. Interestingly, many Japanese, Koreans, Chinese can distinguish the nationality of similar Asian people by slight difference of facial character, clothing or attitude, even if they do not speak out their language.

Question for Japanese ladies? (about Japanese obsessed westerners)?

Question:

What do you think of westerners who are obsessed with Japanese culture and watch anime and call themselves 'otaku'?
Do Japanese women find these guys attractive or bad?
My friend is looking for a Japanese girlfriend and he seems to think being obsessed with Japan is going to get him one.
Opinions?

Answer:

if you have many money, you don't need to worry about that. japanese female or whoever female cares of real life more. and if your character is not bad and moron, it will be fine. but I think most japanese don't like westerners. becuz your face and emotion is very different from japanese.. and some japanese really hate westerners. anyway don't be obsessed with specific country and race.. it is dangerous something.. and most japanese don't like otaku. they say otaku is kimo. kimo means "hating" or disgusting..
if you like anime and you are obsessed with "japan", the japanese ladies will hate you very seriously. they really hate otaku and the person who has no job. and western..

What are japanese schools like?

Question:

I was wondering what japanese schools are like? Do they actually clean their classes and have longer school days? Oh and i dont really get the whole 1-A or 2-D is that a ranking of how smart the kids are or what?? please and thanks!

Answer:

Japanese students are responsible for cleaning the school (classrooms, gym, toilets, hallways, etc.,). How often they have cleaning depends on the school itself. Some schools have cleaning every day, some schools have it only twice a week. If there is no official cleaning, then they have the leaders clean up the classrooms only.

The school days, again depend on the school. Generally, school starts around 8:30 and gets out between 2:30-4.
Clubs run after school, and in junior high, depending on the season end between 4:30-6 (depends on how much light there is).
The link in the sources has some sample schedules for junior high.

As for the number and letter thing, that is for the homeroom. Generally they are not sorted into classes based on their GPA or how smart they are (although that may be different for some high schools since they have different tracks).
Some schools use 1-A, 2-C, etc., others use 1-1, 2-4, etc.,
The first number is for the grade level. The second number (or letter) is which homeroom. Students stay with their homeroom for all of their classes.
Japanese schools do not continue counting the grades all the way through.
So being in class 1-A (or 1-1) could mean you are in the 1st grade/year of elementary school, junior high, or high school.

Volunteering in Japan?

Question:

I'm currently a student in the UK and I'd like to do some volunteering work over the summer to do with the current situation in Japan. I don't want to do more than 2 - 4 weeks, as I've already taken an extra year to do different A Levels, and the course at university I'm going for is maths based, so they probably don't regard a gap year as anything too good (unlike medicine courses). Do you know any good sites?

Answer:

Yea if you find an organization its probably too late to register for it for the summer and most make you pay your air fare and then just provide you with room and meals(sometimes). You can just google ways to volunteer in japan. If I find any for you i will edit this later and let you know.

FLUENT JAPANESE SPEAKERS PLEASE HELP. <3?

Question:

Please make it sound fluent and natural.

"Everything has an end. But a hot dog has two."

Answer:

--> "Everything has an end, but a hot dog has two ends."

This joke made me laugh, but unfortunately there's no real equivalent of it in Japanese >< So for Japanese people they'll go "Huh?" and the joke is not as funny as it is in English. There's no real fluent and natural way to phrase it because I don't think the Japanese will get it; there is a way to write it, it just doesn't have the same effect. Not to mention that in Japanese there are so many ways to say "end". The "owari" and "haji" both mean end, but are used for different things. The "haji" is used to express the end parts of the hot dog while the "owari" generally expresses the ending of something.

Hope this helps! :)

How much do dental assistant get paid in japan, and medical assistant?

Visting japan, your views?

Question:

Hello, thank you for everyone helpping me with my question :).

Im visting japan soon just for the fun of it, i travel a lot and been outside the country many times.I would love to know how you where treated and tips :). Im also curious about the "japanese only" signs i here so much about. As and american how was it, and if theres any out there an black american that travelled to japan.

Thank you all for helping me please also tell your personal experiances :)

Answer:

As long as you abide by Japanese customs, traditions and culture, you will have a fabulous time.
And, if you make even a minute attempt at saying something in their language, the Japanese will treat you royally.
That said, if you behave like a boor, expect to be treated as such.
For example, a recent comment from a British couple that refused to take off their shoes at the entrance of the hotel they were staying in. This couple was so adamant that they even started arguing with the staff.(at first, the staff had come up to them and asked them to take off their shoes, which they refused to do. The next day again they refused to abide by the hotel rules.
Needless to say, this couple did not have a wonderful experience.

I, on the other hand, have been treated royally and on occasions felt like a mpvie star.

There are some places that prohibit Americans from entering, but these are few and far between.
I have traveled from Hokkaido to Okinawa, and have not seen any such place.
If you find a place that does bar Americans, it is because they have been victims of rowdy, unruly
behavior by drunken Americans.

Okay I'm learning Japanese but i have no one to practice with any suggestions?

Question:

I don't know anybody who is or speaks Japanese and I don't think there are many Japanese people in Manchester UK and allot of the people that I know that claim to know Japanese ¬_¬ are those friiking idiots that learn it of anime and don't even know what a particle is -_-*

I was thinking if I tried slipping some Japanese sentences in through out the day like when speaking to myself or bf it could help or do you think that would make me out to be some Japanese wannabe :/

Answer:

The best way to learn Japanese is by taking a class, enrolling in a course or investing in a good textbook.

Websites are not always the best way to learn Japanese. Most websites are run by people with no teaching credentials and are not even native speakers of Japanese. Some of them are just interested in making money and not in helping you in what you need to be successful in learning Japanese.

The key to learning Japanese effectively is to work on your grammar, listening, speaking, reading and writing. Its best to think of these as separate categories and focus on each specific category as these require different methods and techniques.

Start by learning the basics through grammar. These books really helped me.

• Shin Nihongo no Kiso I & II
http://japan-australia.blogspot.com/2011…

• An Introduction to Modern Japanese by Osamu Mizutani & Nobuko Mizutani
http://japan-australia.blogspot.com/2011…

• Japanese Demystified by Eriko Sato a self-teaching guide
http://japan-australia.blogspot.com/2011…

These books cover both polite Japanese, which is extremely important to learn in order to speak Japanese effectively and causal Japanese, which is great for everyday conversations.

I also recommend trying to learn a certain amount of vocab or kanji each day as this helps you build up your vocab and kanji ability. I tried to learn 5 kanji per day or about 20 a week and did the same with vocab.

Watching Japanese anime or any Japanese TV program is a good idea for improving your listening skills and also your vocabulary. Keep a notebook and jot down any new words you hear. Then look them up and find out the meaning.

Moving to japan help, question, you get the idea?

Question:

Hi well i was wondering what steps to do i have to take to move to Japan. I have heard it is pretty complicated. Well thing is I am currently in the military and my fellow soldiers, we were talking about what we were going to do after our services are complete. This had me thinking for weeks and I decided i wanted to live in japan you know settle down wife and kids and have a civilian job. So if you guys could help me out it would do me good.
And by the way if it helps i have a bachelors degree in criminal justice
thanks in advance

Answer:

You usually need working or student visa to live in Japan.

For working visa, you have to get a job offer from a Japanese company. But you can't look for a job in Japan without a visa. So you need it before you enter Japan.

For student visa, you have to be admitted to a Japanese college. You need to pay tuition and living cost for 4 years. It could be about $100,000.

Japanese language(Help)?

Question:

First translate this:

Nimotsu ga omoi node, musuko ni nimotsu o motasemasu.

Second what does "Futsu-kei + node" means, when and how do we apply them?

Thanks

Answer:

1. Since the luggage is heavy for me, I'll let my son have it.

2. ”Common form of adjectives+ので” means "because/ the reason why (something/someone be) Futsu-kei".
You apply them when you explain an adjectival reason, cause that lead you a particular situation.

Is this correct Japanese? "No one knows her better than I do" is...?

Question:

But 彼女を私よりも知っている人は誰もいない might be more natural.

What would you recommend?

Question:

When I graduate I would like to teach in japan. My three top choices would by kyoto, osaka, or tokyo. Which one should I do in your opinion. And can you tell me experiences or anything about the town you pick. If you don't like those towns tell me what town you like that's a good or better choice thank you

Answer:

Kyoto is beautiful. Tokyo is fascinating, but overwhelming, I think. There are lots of companies based in Osaka with employees who may wish to improve their English. Mazda has its HQ in Hiroshima, which I'd probably research more if I had my choice.

What is there to do in Japan and Taiwan?

Question:

I asked this question before but I decided to ask it again because I want more answers.

I am going to both countries in January. Does anyone have any suggestions of things I can do in both countries. Even if you tell me about 1 of the 2 of them I really appreciate it. Thanks!

Answer:

Why not ask separately in both places? you will get better responses. Not sure about the Taiwan section but this question is fairly frequent on this section and searching through the database will provide lots of leads and also searching Google is a bonus as well

Where best to stay in Tokyo?

Question:

so i will be staying in Tokyo for 3 days and will travel during those days. I tried looking for cheap inn/hostel but at the same time is near a station. I originally preferred Toyoko Inn which is near the Shinjuku station which, I think, is a very convenient station. However, I found another one in Ikebukuro which is also near the station but offers dormitory prices so it's waaayyy cheaper than the one in Shinjuku. I found one in Asakusa too but I think Asakusa station is not that convenient...

advice anyone? thank you!

Japanese DS RPGs that have an english option, or have been translated?

Question:

1)I'm looking for dating sims for girls (does the Ouran game have an option for english? Someone said it does in Youtube. They said its in the settings, and you can change the language! Is it true?)
2)Horror games!(Does the higurashi series have an english option?)
3)Paranormal games
4)Dating sims(for guys or girls. I don't mind playing the ones for boys. Its like, instead of falling in love with the character in them, you just pick your favorite anime couple!
4)Just some fun games!
The reason I'm asking this is mainly because of the Ouran Koukou Host Club game. Someone has been saying that there's an english option, and people don't know it because they over look it, or they don't understand the words. I don't want to buy this game until I know it has the option for SURE(its almost 200$)!
Please tell me if its true? Please and thank you!
Oh the RPGs I'm already buying are:
Lux-Pain and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney!

Answer:

No, there is NO version of the host club game in English, they're playing a joke on you.

Yes, you can get higurashi from mangagamer.com - for the PC, not the DS.

If you're looking for DS games, Princess Debut is the closest thing to a real japanese dating sim for girls in English but it's aimed at kinda young girls. If you like horror games and don't care too much about the dating aspect, DEFINITELY play 9 persons 9 hours 9 doors because it rocks.

Otherwise there's a list of dating sims for girls here:
http://www.otomegames.com/games.shtml

you would probably like Date Warp, it has some paranormal bits in it

A question for married, male residents of Japan?

Question:

I recently read in the Japan Times how the 'pocket money' for the average Japanese salaryman is at an all-time low of about 36,000 yen/month, about half of what it was in 1990. I know that most, if not all, my Japanese friends have bought into this scheme but that dog don't hunt in my house. How many of you 'subscribe' to this 'pocket money' idea where the wife gives you a monthly allowance?

Answer:

I do.
I get 50,000 yen/month. But I have to save 10,000 of that in order to travel with my wife.
So I'm an average man (:

Why long route is taken while going to america from japan?

Question:

Answer:

This was asked and answered just recently. What possible reason can you think of that the airlines would not take the shortest route? From New York to Japan they fly over Alaska. Get a globe and a piece of string and check it out. They fly both ways on this route in spite of winds that make one leg take more time than the other.

EDIT: Just noted that this is a brand-spanking new account, which explains this question as being of the obligatory s*** f*** nature.

How to pass drivers test in japan?

Question:

okay so im planning to enroll at the driving school near my place but the problem is that, im still having a communication problem with people, im still not good in my japanese grammar even though im half japanese myself, the fact that i didnt grew up here and just moved here 3 years ago. i heard of people failing many times because it was THAT hard. i really dont know what to expect when i enroll since ive got no experience in driving AT ALL. so im asking if anyone can give me ideas on how to pass etc. thank you :)

Answer:

There's a school in or around Tokyo that provides classes in English.

The test is given in English in many prefectures.

The books from the above mentioned school may be available separately.

From what I have been told, the instructor doesn't say anything. I was led to believe it is like the motorcycle license driving practical. You memorize the course.

If you have a license from another country, the test is supposedly limited to 10 multiple choice questions. Otherwise it really gets complicated.

If you have more questions specifically, email me.

How can Japan fix its economy and return as an economic power again?

Question:

Can it retake China as number 2 after USA?

Answer:

Japan economy can only improve if the world economy improves. Japan's economy is based on exports. If the economy of other nations are down and people are not buy products whether it's domestic or foreign made products, then the demands for Japanese products is going to be down, too.

China is an economic power only because it has one of the cheapest cost of labor on earth. This allows them to make products at such low cost that other nations usually cannot compete. But China has a growing domestic problem that no one in the Communist government knows how to cure - widening gap between the rich and the poor where the poor makes up nearly 90% of China's population. When a nation has such as disparity in wealth, over time it leads to a revolution. And when that happens, China's economy will be in ruins.
