Why long route is taken while going to america from japan?

This was asked and answered just recently. What possible reason can you think of that the airlines would not take the shortest route? From New York to Japan they fly over Alaska. Get a globe and a piece of string and check it out. They fly both ways on this route in spite of winds that make one leg take more time than the other.

EDIT: Just noted that this is a brand-spanking new account, which explains this question as being of the obligatory s*** f*** nature.
