WHY DOES THE CONFUCIAN WORK ETHIC CONTRIBUTE TO WORK ADDICTION IN JAPAN?

Question:

Answer:

It does not. Definitely not. The various concepts in the philosophy have been a useful set of tools for the rulers to manipulate and control their subjects with. Full stop. When I was younger, I hated it because I felt as if I were being suffocated by it.

Should we expect another "big one" in Tokyo soon?

Question:

Question for those that know, not those that guess.

I've heard conflicting information that says that either the quake will make "the big one," that is supposed to hit Tokyo in 30 years, come much earlier. On the otherhand, I heard that this last quake should reset the energy levels for some time, and therefore "the big one" will most likely come later than before.

I know no one has any clue what will really happen, but if anyone has any knowlege on the subject, I'd love to hear it. Thanks in advance!

Answer:

There is only .001% chance for another earth quake at Japan in this scale ( i mean above 7 magnitude ) . It has never been recorded in the human history and geographically , after tremors are quite common , its just a correction of layer structure or alignment. Continuous quake of magnitude 9 and above resulted in the extinguishing of dinosaurs.

Will Japan be Safe by Next Year?

Question:

So I have a Japan trip planned for April 2012. But after all that happened, I was wondering if it will be safe by then? As in, the radiation threats over and out of the food chain?

Answer:

Define safe.

Will Japan be devoid of earthquakes? No. But no place on earth is, was or will be devoid of earthquakes, especially a country that sits on 4 fault lines. But then again, New York is also overdue for "the big one" too.

Will Japan ever be safe from radiation? It already is. The media is doing a great job of scaring everyone into thinking that a nuclear winter is already happening. IT'S NOT. The radiation levels detected around the plant is less than what you would find in a banana. Doing research on the two foods that can suck in radiation the easiest, milk and spinach, they found slightly higher levels of radiation in them.

What does that mean? It means that if you ate 300 years worth of spinach IN ONE DAY, you would begin to feel slight radiation poisoning. If you washed it first, then you would need at least double that.

As for sushi, it's a staple food here. If other people are eating it daily, I think it's safe for you to visit a chef who makes it. In other words, RELAX. The only problems going on right now are the ones that the news is ignoring. Several million people without homes freezing in shelters while millions more have to deal with blackouts and lies of the media. Relax, and enjoy your trip next year.

Can you use つ to count over 10 in Japanese?

Question:

So I know hitotsu futatsu....kokonotsu tou, but I was just wondering how you would count above 10?? Juu-hitotsu just doesn't sound quite right to me for 11, for example. How would you count over 10 using the つ counter or can you not do that? Is there another counter that people would use instead of つ ?

Thanks.

Answer:

You are right. You can use both つ and こ until 9, but from 10, only こ can be used as long as you count objects in general. Ex. 11こ, 12こ, 20こ, 100こ...

But in most cases, we count particular objects or creatures. Then the things get complicated, because each object and creature has its own 'counter' as you may know.
Ex. paper (まい); books (さつ); chopsticks (ほんor ぽん); plate (さら); car (だい); birds (わ); fish (ひきorぴき); animals (とう): humans (にん); jacket (ちゃく); shoes (そく); tofu (ちょう), etc, etc.

I often heard complaints about this ↑↑ from English-speaking ppl who were learning Japanese. I used to 'talk them back,' by saying "hey, your counting system is illogical and complicated, too." Would you explain why you count things like "two glasses of water (instead of 2 waters);" "three cups of coffee (instead of 3 coffees);" "four loaves of bread (instead of 4 breads);" "a pair of panties (why a piece of panty should be a pair? I've never seen a panty for one leg only);" "a school of fish (I'm extremely curious about their high school);" "a head of cabbage (I didn't know that cabbage has a brain);" "a cake of soap (do you eat soap? how does it taste?)," etc, etc... Then, they would say, "hmmm, I've never thought about it."

@ David ↑↑ said, "a native speaker can do better." But, that is not true (often times), because native speakers are apt to take everything in their language (including all the grammatical irregularities and exceptions) for granted, and never had a serious doubt about them. That is what 'native speaker' is all about. So, when they (and we) are asked about these irregularities, we would be at a loss. It is extremely difficult to explain them especially in a language that is not our native tongue. I have been studying English for many years on my own. I really wonder how many native speakers of English can answer my questions in Japanese (not in English). My point is that "a non-native speaker can do better" sometimes.

Question:

i know its a stupid question but i have no clue whats going on right now

Answer:

There's still new problems and new issues that are occurring every hour over there. They're handling the issues as best as they could as they occur. It's just so awful, I feel so bad for everyone there. www.ncnuke.com is a really good website if you want to stay up to date on all of the nuclear issues that are occurring in Japan. I check it all the time because I'm so worried for everyone there.

An nuclear crisis in japan and how would it affect the people?

Question:

Answer:

There really isn't a "crisis". There is a power plant problem, people in the immediate vicinity (30 km/16 miles) have been evacuated for a few weeks, some crops around the area have been contaminated. However, compared to the damage caused by the tsunami, the power plant problem is minuscule.

Answer:

Are japanese products safe?

Question:

i just brought a pair of headphones from japan. and my parents are telling me to throw them out because of some nuclear thing that happened. they were really expensive though.

Answer:

The main concern is food from Japan. But products like headphones, which wont be put inside your body, are less of a concern.

The first thing you can do is check the packaging of your headphones. Does it say exactly where they were manufactured? Unless they were made in Fukushima (near the damaged reactor) you are probably perfectly safe. But even if they were made in another city, and traveled through Fukushima to get to the port (for example), the chances of that being enough exposure for the product to become contaminated are very slim. And even if some particles were deposited, they would mostly not be on the product itself, but on the outside of the packaging, which you can remove and throw away.

Anyway, the human body can withstand a little radiation. In fact, we are almost always exposed to natural radiation from rock, soil, water, air, and from space. That's not to mention human activities, like flying in planes, and getting medical scans.

But if you still want to be sure, then depending on your location, you could probably take your headphones to your local airport/hospital/university, and ask someone with a particle detector to take a few seconds and check your headphones for you.

Best of luck!

What is a suitable Japanese surname for Eri?

Question:

My name is Ellie, and it sound like Eri in Japanese. I've tried to look at some website to find out the meaning, and it's suppose to mean something like being blessed.

I know Japanese surname are name after Nature. I want one that is 4 syllabus long and sound graceful. And please state the meaning of it thanks alot!

Answer:

Basically, Japanese do not think about combination between surname and given name.

In other words, you can put any surname for Eri.

There is no "suitability" there. You can choose from most common names like Sato, Suzuki, etc.

They say that there are more than 100,000 surnames in Japan.

>and it's suppose to mean something like being blessed.

Its meaning is not decided unless you write it in kanji. There are more than 1 ways to write "Eri". But you are not showing it.

If large parts of japan become not fit for human habitation due to radioactive contamination, what then?

Question:

I men say if they go from bad to worse with their nuclear reactors and theres meltdowns and large parts of japan are contaminated, what then if there are calls for large scale evacuations of japanese nationals to other parts of the world, where do u think they will be sent?
What parts of the world have plenty of land for them to evacuate too and millions or tens of millions of them over time?

Answer:

Don't have a wrong idea like Japanese people want to move to other countries.

Most Japanese people want to stay in Japan.

It depends on what you mean by large part. But even if 20% of Japan is contaminated, it's still 80% safe. And it's enough for Japanese people to live.

What is the recent tusnami name that just hit japan on march 11 2011?

Question:

Answer:

Tsunamis do not have names. Since they were caused by earthquakes, and an earthquake does not have names neither does a Tsunami.

Earthquakes do not have names. the 2011 earthquake in the Tōhoku region that was offshore was just the AREA of impact. They do not designate names for earthquakes in earthquake prone areas. In that case they would have named every one or designated a number to it. This is not the first time there had been an earthquake there, nor the last. So was this The Tōhoku region Pacific Ocean offshore earthquake #211??
No.
That's just where it happened, not its name.

They describe the earthquake as the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, but neither were given names. Tōhoku region Pacific Ocean offshore is just a literal description of the area.

Hope this helps.

How can "crew evacuate nuclear plant"?

Question:

In Japan
It was one of the breaking news I just saw a headline

Answer:

Very cute, but "evacuate" has two meanings -- to leave from or to take someone out from. The crew were obviously leaving, not taking the plant out. As an example, you could say the Japanese people evacuated Japan, or the U.S. Navy evacuated Japan. Evacuate just means "empty."

Can anyone please describe what happend in Japan with the Tsunami?

Question:

Answer:

it wiped off some towns, killed thousands of people, make them homeless. The Earthquake before "screwed" Nuke plant, sending panics all over the world fearing another Chernobyl. Tsunami washed off generators that were suppose to work as coolers for rods, Radiation is leaking, it gets into tap water, soil, plants, milk. People have shortage of food. They are not panicking (amazing), no looting (unbelievable). World health organization says the Japan needs to act "quickly to ban sell of contaminated food".

In short, it is bad, getting worse.

Are the nuclear reactors in Japan located underground?

Question:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/22/world/…
The reason I ask is that in this photograph of Unit No. 3, there appears to be very little left but smoldering ruins. Is this part just the outer shell, and is the actual containment vessel underground?

Answer:

Here is an informative article describing the situation, it also has some diagrams:
http://bravenewclimate.com/2011/03/13/fu…

Note that the explosions were hydrogen gas explosions and were outside the containment vessel (unlike Chernobyl which had the hydrogen gas explosion inside the containment vessel because of poor reactor design). They blew away the outer shell of the building, but that's not part of the containment process.

Given that the forty year old power plants were first subject to an earthquake five times the force they were designed for and then they were hit with a tsunami, they're actually doing incredibly well. It says a lot for the safety of nuclear power.

How to write invitations in Japanese?

Question:

I have very little experience with Japanese and let's just say that the text books don't prepare you for the stress of summing up courage to invite a Japanese ambassador to a fund raiser for Japan earthquake victims. ;D

The invitation is very short. I suppose I start with 拝啓 and finish with 敬具, right? And the rest is all keigo?
This is the basic structure of the invitation.

Your excellence,
Due to recent events, the organization X and the association Y decided to organize a fund raising picture exhibition of the famous Japanese photographer ZZ. We would be honored if you could support our efforts with your presence.

Answer:

You are exactly right about Haikei and Keig, and as you say, you need to keep everything in keigo.

Since you are non-Japanese, minor errors won't be a problem, if anything, that might work in favor of you.

I'm not an English speaker either, so maybe it's time for me to pull out of here.

Thank you.

Helping Japan on Ebay?

Question:

I have some items I would love to sell on eBay that has to do or made in Japan.

The question is, Is there a way I can donate the money directly to the Red Cross through Paypal once the item is sold? Instead of me manually transferring the money from my bank account, could I transfer the money directly to the Red Cross?

I am an American who embraces Japanese Culture, and I love just about everything about Japan, especially the people. I want to help them by giving them money for food, water and clothing or even to help rebuild. I would do anything for them! It breaks my heart that the quake/tsunami happened to them, they didn't deserve it!

Is there a way I can donate the money directly to the Red Cross through Paypal once the item is sold? Instead of me manually transferring the money from my bank account, could I transfer the money directly to the Red Cross?

Thank you so much!

- Justin

Answer:

Since you are the seller, you will need to receive payments for those items. The sale price would be deposited ni paypal (assuming you use that as your method of payment) and then you can transfer that amount to the Red Cross (check the paypal webiste for a link)

you could donate the items to the Red Cross and they can sell them I guess

you could also offer the items for free and tell the bidders to donate the money directly to the Red Cross. Issue though is: How would you verify that the payment was indeed made?

So to answer your question: no YOU cannot sell the items and have the money go straight from paypal to the Red Cross

How does one find a job in a foreign country?

Question:

I'm graduating soon, and I'm currently mulling over taking a gap year. I'd love to spend a year overseas, but I'm not that financially well off. Since it would take me years before I could possibly save enough to cover all of my costs for a whole year, I figured that I might get a job while I was there.

How would I go about getting a job in a foreign country? I'm great at English, but I don't think I'd be very good at teaching; are there any other choices for a foreigner to do? It might score bonus points with any future colleges if I found a job pertaining to my chosen career path (journalism), but I'm also trying to be highly realistic. (I posted the question here because I figured that a fellow traveler would know.)

Answer:

If you are a foreigner looking for a job in Japan, I recommend the website;
http://www.gaijinpot.com
This site lists jobs, apartments and events going on in Japan. It is a very popular website for foreigners.

So me and a friend are planning to move to japan for school, what do i need to know?

Question:

I graduate in 2012 and i figure about a year or half a year after that I move out. I personally don't care where I go but my best friend wanted to move to japan so why not just go with her. I figured we would need to save up enough money to keep us alive for 3 months while we work on getting our student visa's cause you can't legally work in japan without one. I'm also trying to consider the earthquake that just happened and im wondering how that would affect us as well. It's definitely a lot to think about. I'm thinking for 3 months 2 people could live off of 9000. I also have to think about the cost of moving itself. we wouldn't bring much though Its not like id have large furniture i would need to ship. In fact i could take it on the plane with me. The most i would need would be my clothes and my computer maybe a few sentimental items. A lot of japanese apartments are pre-furnished. What are the fees involved with getting a visa. How do student loans work for students who study abroad. I plan on moving back to america after im finished with school, but what if i want to become a citizen what do i need to do then?

Answer:

Your plan has a few flaws that I would like to point out.

You can't just 'get an apartment' in Japan. Unless it's Sakura House in Tokyo, that caters to foreigners;
http://www.sakura-house.com/
You might be out of luck because many people won't rent to foreigners. Even as my husband (who is japanese) went looking for an apartment, half of our options are crossed out because his partner is white.
Usually when you rent an apartment, you don't just rent it and think you are ready to go. There is key money, and usually you have to pay two-three months rent in one go. It might cost you about $3000-$5000 to get set up. Then three months with $4000 between the two of you. $2000 each for three months.
Then you have to make sure you are accepted into a school (the school year starts in April). Are you sure that is going to match up with the date you are going to arrive?
Then you have immigration fees, I don't know for a student visa because I am on a work visa. If you aren't accepted to a school, you won't get a Japanese student visa which are always usually issued before you come to Japan. Make sure you have everything mapped out before you jump on a plane. On a student visa you may only be able to work a certain amount of hours a week (20?). Is that enough on minimum wage to help you guys to live? Some hostels may let you live for free if you work there for 3 hours a day. You need to check. Also, if you cannot speak Japanese, do you think you can get a job? And most jobs for part time workers are minimum wage. Please be careful on what you decide.

What are the most popular video sharing websites (i.e like youtube) in Japan?

Question:

What are the most popular youtube-style websites in Japan? I have already identified Gyao, and apparently there is one called "Nico Nico Douga" and another called Watchme.tv. Plese can you tell me any others? If possible could you rank all the ones you can think of in terms of popularity/userbase.

Answer:

Nico Nico is the most popular one now.

Gyao is not video "sharing" site. They distribute videos. But users can't upload any video.

I think Youtube and Nico Nico are the 2 most popular video sharing sites now. Others are much behind those.

How is the Nuclear Power plant dangerous in Japan?

Question:

How is it hazardous? Does it kill anything in its path? I'm like lost in this "crisis". As well as in Egypt? Why are there Guns? Tomahawk Missles? PLEASE EXPLAIN!!! Why are they fighting?
-just curious

Answer:

The Fukushima plant is on the verge of a meltdown, so if this were to happen then yes it would kill people who had extreme exposure to the radiation. Not only that, but radiation has been leaking more and more and it has been contaminated into Japan's food farms and even tap water. Not too large amounts, but it's still hazardous. Japan exports foods primarily to the U.S. and China, so that's why it could be even more dangerous. This is the greatest nuclear crisis since the Chernobyl

The missiles are for "humanitarian" efforts against the dictator of Libya, Moammar Gadhafi, who's country is currently at civil war, with the pro government regime (green flags) and the anti government rebels (red, black, and green). It's also to ensure a No Fly Zone over Libya. NATO and the UN has ordered that Gadhafi order a complete cease fire, which no one seemed to have believe he committed to, so thats when the UK, France, and U.S. launched over 120+ missiles to Tripoli, Misurata, and Benghazi to cripple to Pro government forces and to bring aid and prevent more human casualties on both sides of the war.

Egypt is really not important at all. Over a month ago, Egyptians were protesting that, now ex President Mubarek, needed to step down from his position because of his 3 decade rule over the country, and the Egyptians wanted democracy and not a totalitarian who called himself a president to deceive people into thinking he's an actual president who wants democracy in his country.

Why aren't they pouring concrete over the reactors in Fukushima?

Question:

Answer:

The power plant halted the nuclear fusion reaction on the day of the earthquake. Current heat is decay heat.

The team "Fukushima 50" is trying to remove the heat and eliminate the causes of accident and actually the surface temperature of the reactors already dropped below 100 dgs C (210 F). If they poured concrete over the plant, it means they didn't eliminate the cause and the area would be like Chernobyl.

The team is trying to save the neighboring villages to be a ghost village.

Serious answers please. With the radiation levels so high in Japan do you think products we buy from japan?

Question:

will be radioactive? Ex the prius is manufactured there in a plant near Tokyo. People who had been exposed to radiation years ago still show positive when scanned with a radiation meter. I know the goverments are saying not to worry, even though radiation is showing up in water, food, etc. but this what governments always say. Please only serious knowledgable answers.

Answer:

Yes the radiation is showing up in some food supplies near the affected areas but it won't affect cars, electronics or any consumable one buys from Japan. So don't worry about this. For example i ordered a Pentax camera two weeks ago which was due for release this week. Know i ordered it from a U.K supplier and first shipments were meant to be coming from Japan this week but obviously it will be delayed until April they say. Am i worried about any radiation? no and besides ordering goods from Japan is one way to help boost the economy

In Japan, do they cook everything with chopsticks?

Question:

Excluding foreign restaurants and traditions that use 'forks' and 'spoons' and whatnot. (ex: McDonalds, etc.)
And i'm exaggerating on "everything". It's obvious that you don't cook soup with a chopstick, no?

Answer:

To be honest ... yes. Quite alot of stuff is made by chopsticks here. Cooking chopsticks are very common, and many chefs would feel more comfortable using a pair of cooking chopsticks than a fork for example.

Obviously food is cut by sharp knives (you cant cut with chopsticks!!!) but an awful lot of food is cooked by chopsticks. Even soup ... sometimes. Chopsticks give you alot more precision.

How bad is the nuclear power plant in japan?

Question:

is it going to be like chernobyl? i just hope its under control.

Answer:

The Chernobyl plant had no containment vessel so it released radioactivity readily. The Japanese plants have inner and outer containment vessels. The outer vessels are damaged, but the inner vessels should contain most of the radiation. Its still bad, but not as bad as the big "C".

Here is a short video of what is happening inside on an atomic level.
