Does the nail that sticks out the most get hit the hardest?

Question:

Are there such things as individuals?

Answer:

the nail that sticks up gets hammered down - very true in Japan. if you speak up, you will get hammered down. there is a famous poem written hundreds of years ago which goes like: though I am sick and tired of the society, I cannot fly away because I am not a bird.

if you are a foreigner, you will be excused because you are not and will never and ever be "in" the society.

What sizes are stocked in Japan?

Question:

Japan is the first leg of my trip through asia, but it'll only be for a few days. I'm wondering what sizes are stocked, on average in Japanese stores, for both shoes and clothing. Since my trip is short, I won't have time to order clothing if I find something I really like.

Answer:

It depends on each store. But it's better to tell us your size first and ask if Japanese stores have that size.

Addition:
If you are 170cm tall, you can easily find cloths in Japan. There are many women who are 170cm tall in Japan. Why do you think you can't?

And there is also no problem with shoes.

Needs to withdraw and send money urgently in Japan?

Question:

My sister is dealing with a situation that is extremely complicated in New York and I want to help her out by wiring some money to her. I am currently in Japan but holds a Mastercard from a bank with no local branch here. I have tried to send her the money online but failed many times both with Western Union and Moneygram. Is there anywhere I can withdraw the money in cash? The Japanese local banks will not do it... Please help me.

Answer:

I can't say that I am 100% positive that this works for Mastercard.
But all 7 Elevens over there should have international ATMs. I used to withdraw from them all the time (but with a Visa, Bank of America card). You should definitely check one out though. There are tons of 7 Elevens around Japan.

Also, although less common, citiBank ATMs will also let you withdraw cash from your account. Like I said before, I used Visa, so I'm not completely certain, but I have never heard of any other study abroad students with an issue with withdrawing from these two places (surely one of them had to have a Mastercard).

Hope this helps! Good luck!

Question for japanese girls?

Question:

what is the average height for u girls?
and what about the average breast size?
cos what i know japanese have the largest between asians

Answer:

In feet, I'm 5"2.
I wear a 34 C.

Average? Well, most Japanese women are relatively short- even in comparison to other Asians. Anywhere from 5"0-5"2 is average, I'd say. Don't feel like clarifying that, though.

As far as busts go, most of us have small breasts. It's not really a completely untrue stereotype that Japanese women are small in the chest area. What happened to me is that my mother is white, so I kind of got the whole bust deal from her.

この英文なのですが... what is the function of なのですが?

Question:

Here is the original question:
No one could understand why he killed himself. It just didn`t make sense.
この英文なのですが、前半は「彼がなぜ自殺したのかは誰もわからない」でいいので…

この英文 = this English sentence

if なの and が are omitted, the sentence becomes この英文です, which translates to "It is an English sentence"

now if が is added, then it becomes この英文ですが。。。 I still can't fully understand the use of が at the end of a sentence. One thing I know is that が in this case can be translated to "but" or "and".

as for なの, I'm completely clueless about its use. :/

Answer:

この英文なのですが This is the english text, but...

なのですが means the same as ..ですが (...is but...). The difference is that なの makes the sentence more formal and by using it is like you are more sure about what you're saying. But it is known as a feminine way to talk. Most guys say なん instead of なの.

For example: How old are you?
Formal: 何歳ですか
Most formal: 何歳なのですか
Feminine: 何歳なの?
Masculine - Formal (I often use this): 何歳なん?

Can you please help me translating this from japanese? I made my own translation but I'm not sure?

Question:

どうか酷い夢だと答えて欲しい Please i want to answer to the cruel dreams
どれだけ叫び 悶え 苦しめばいい Which one should i suffer: yells or agony?
どうか酷い夢だと教えて欲しい Please in case they are cruel i want to show my dreams
千切れそうな声で何度も叫んだ No matter how many times the voice that seemed to be destroyed into pieces screamed

声を殺して Kill the voice
枯れそうな自分に言い聞かせていた You made the vanishing freedom say and hear
生きる事を見失わぬよう Like not loosing sight of living
声を殺して Kill the voice
震えた夜は痛みに溺れていく The shaken nights will be drowned in pain
途切れそうな息を許して…. Release the breath that was interrupted

Did i translate right?

Answer:

どうか酷い夢だと答えて欲しい
I want you to tell me that is a nightmare.
(Please tell me that's a nightmare")

どれだけ叫び 悶え 苦しめばいい
How much pain and agony do I have to go through?

どうか酷い夢だと教えて欲しい
Please tell me it's a nightmare.

千切れそうな声で何度も叫んだ
shouting and screaming many many times

声を殺して
Kill the voice(be silent, be quiet))

枯れそうな自分に言い聞かせていた
telling it to myself who is dying.

生きる事を見失わぬよう
to not loose the "will to live"

震えた夜は痛みに溺れていく
I'm shivering and drowning in pain at night

途切れそうな息を許して
with hardly breathing

your translation is not bad, but do you understand what you are saying?
this is a poem, sometimes you have to think more than a literal translation.

BTW, is this "X"?

Pre-requirement for going to japan?

Question:

i am 17 years old student at Sandiego, california. I am just wondering what I must do for being able to go to japan this december. I have a U.S citizenship.
do i have to get like VISA from japan embassy? and do i have to be 18 in order to make a reservation for the flight? and what airline should i choose for the flight to japan from San Diego, CA?

Answer:

You have to have parental consent to get a passport. A minor can't leave the country without written parental consent and having an adult meet you when you arrive.
An American can stay up to 90 days as a visitor without a visa. But when you arrive they will ask you the purpose of your visit, where you'll be staying, and how long. They will also take your photo and fingerprints. If you refuse anything, you will be denied entry..

Kanji for Kanna (the name)?

Question:

What is the kanji for the female name Kanna?
I've seen this 栞菜, but I can't be too sure about it...Kanji is really hard for me to read ;^_^
And if there are others, please post them.

I (kind of) asked about this yesterday, but no one replied with the kanji characters.

Answer:

Well there are many Kanji characters that read "Kan" and "Na". I have never heard of anyone with that name (栞菜 or Kanna for that matter), but it sounds really pretty, but if you are not sure about those Kanji characters I would recommend just writing it with Hiragana characters ("かんな").

How often is the term 無神論者 (むしんろんしゃ)used in Japanese?

Question:

If I told someone I was a mushinronsha would they know what I mean?

Answer:

Yeah, it is not as common as atheist in English. I would probably say something like 神様なんて信じない。But, it is probably not going to come up in conversations ever. No one has ever asked me what I believed in Japanese. I always offer the information that I am Christian. It has been my experience that they assume all Americans are. If its important to you to clarify that, you can. But it is not as important or defining as it is in the states.

Are there any places that have roller slides in Tokyo?

Question:

Planning a trip to Tokyo with my husband and daughter. Going to Puroland and was wondering if there are any parks with roller slides near by?

Answer:

Tama chuo koen (多摩中央公園) is right next to Puroland. But there is no roller slides.
Tonoiri chuo koen (殿入中央公園) and Ome Kabokuen(青梅花木園) have a long roller slides.
But it is too far, although it is not impossible to go.

How about Tama Zoo (多摩動物公園) ? You can go to there easily by monorail.

In addition, Showa kinen kouen 昭和記念公園 is easy to access. You can get there by monorail, and it has some roller sliders, but they are not in use for repair right now.

Can I get my prescriptions in Japan?

Question:

I'm going to study abroad for 11 months, and won't be coming home during the winter break. Right now I need to prepare my medication, but I heard that you can't bring more than a 6 month supply of medication with you, you can't have the medication mailed to you (so says my student handbook), and you can't fill a prescription made in America in Japan.

So is it likely that a doctor in Japan will prescribe the same medication, even though it's for depression and anxiety?

Here are my prescriptions:
Citalopram (Brand name Celexa)
Buspar (Buspirone)

I realize this question might be a little difficult, so thank you very, very much in advance to any who try to answer my question for me!

Answer:

Citalopram/Celexa is "still under investigation in Japan or have dropped their pursuit on gaining entry into the Japanese market".

The statement "The lack of buspirone and SSRIs in the market may contribute to the widespread prescription of BZDs in Japan." leads me to believe that the second drug may also be unavailable. (Though there seems to be a LOT of sites to buy Buspar online.)

Furthermore, it should not be assumed that a comparable substitute will be available. For instance, take the drug Antabuse, used in the treatment of alcoholism. Makes the patient violently ill upon ingestion of even small quantities of alcohol. This drug is not available in Japan. Instead a drug is used that is designed to try to help the patient learn to drink in a normal manner. The medicine can be taken and alcohol consumed, with no ill effects, just so long as the drinking is done in 'moderation'. Two entirely different drugs.

Picture of some japanese school uniforms from graduating in 2000?

Question:

i want know some old uniforms from people who were going to graduate high school from around the year 2000 please, i need it for a drawing im doing. please and thank you

Answer:

I tried a quick Google search, but nothing came up easily. I'm pretty sure that if you spent some time searching on Google and Yahoo though, you would probably come up with something.

Also, you might want to consider that the uniforms don't change year to year. At least they don't at my daughter's private school. She's had the same type of uniform for the past 3 years. Same deal with my other daughter's public school uniform. Does it really have to be 2000?

Why the japan group AKB 48 only has 47 members?

Question:

Lately I just got a AKB 48 poster and I counted the members and realised that there are only 47 girls in this group instead of 48 members. Why is that so? Any reasons?

Answer:

"48" didn't mean number of members.
They actually have more members and these numbers are not fixed. Some girls often in and out.
They usually have 60 - 70 girls, including some backup members and apprentice.

Why "48" ?
In their live theater in Akihabara district (AKB), they used to have 3 stages in one day.
16 girls performed for each stages. I'm not sure if they still have live performances like this.
That's the reason they named their team AKB 48.

Why does the Japanese like bowing their heads so much?

Question:

Is it a respectful way of greetings? I don't see their neighbors, china,korea,etc...do it :/

It's somewhat like our handshake, but often a sign of respect. You don't always just bow your head, but your whole upper body. Older. more important people would receive a deeper bow.

Weird english guy: Lets welcome everyone from SHINEE!

Women: EVeryone is so cute, aren't they?

Guy: Let's hear their self introduction

SHINEE: Hello we are SHINEE

Woman: Everyone really is cute even though you're teenagers, you really are good singers.

*SHINEE brought a present*

WOman: where did you buy this present?

SHINEE: Odaiba

*SHINEE goes to shopping centre in Odaiba to buy a present*

Jonghyun: I am now looking for a present

Key + the rest: Good morning

Minho: What's that? Can i go in it?

I can translate any further because of SHINEE's on off korean, which is a language i do not know.

How much does a single cost in Japn?

Question:

The average Itunes track in U.S.A cost 0.99 right?

How much does it cost in Japan? It doesn't have to be from Itunes.

Answer:

170 to 200 yen from iTunes. More than from the U.S. iTunes but not outrageous as some have stated. I mean, 'mis-stated'. The problem is that unless things have changed, you can't download from the Japanese site. I should say they try to stop you. I live in Japan and download from the U.S. site, so there is a work-around.

EDIT: Thanks for the TD. Did you check the link? Ain't no mistaking the data.
