What are some important thing that I, as American, should know about Japanese etiquette before I go?

Question:

I have been learning some Japanese, but I will probably sound like I'm trying to make of them if I speak it.

I know that instead of extending your hand for shake, you just bow, deeper and longer than your senior.

What else do I need to know?

Answer:

WOW!

So much you need to know, but after living here for over four years already I have come to understand it all.

Yes, taking off your shoes is right, but also wearing different provided slippers for the toilet for example!

Don't cross your hashi (chopsticks)
Don't be loud and annoying like many gaijins I see.
Learn some Japanese words for etiquette
You can shake hand, most J people like to as it is different for them.
Bowing is mainly for formal situations
Don't spit
Don't eat on the trains
Have your phone on vibrate or silent on the trains and DO NOT talk on your phone on a train

There is more, but I have a lesson to prepare!

If you have any questions you can mail me and I will answer you.

It's a great place to live, but does take some getting used to!

Artist Visa for Japan?

Question:

Hi there,

I'm trying to move to Japan for the next 3 years or so for possible songwriting collaborations, and it seems that my primary option is getting a artist visa.
However there is little information available on the internet regarding this visa.
I'm currently residing in the US (also on an Artist Visa) and my country of origin is the Netherlands.

I do not possess a bachelor degree but I have proper qualifications (platinum and gold selling records and tons of media) and have been active in my field (musician) for 11 years.
There might also be a possibility for me to get recommendation letters from 2 MAJOR Japanese artists as well.

I was wondering if anyone here knows anything on how I would go about proceeding and what my chances are of getting a visa in the first place.

Thanks a lot!

Answer:

Check this page.

Looking for a House in Japan?

Question:

I'm thinking about moving to Japan & I wanted a nice house to buy. But I don't want any neighbors around. Like just a little house on the hill. Almost farm like. But I'm having trouble finding that kind of house online.

Answer:

Like the others have told you, it will have to be Hokkaido.
Now the hard part, how are you going to move there ? You need a visa to stay more than 90 days.
A work visa requires a four year degree and a job offer before you get there. Not a lot of jobs available
in the boonies of Hokkaido.
What are you going to do once you get there ? There will be few, if any people who speak any English in remote areas.

Are young Japanese women the most snobbish women in Asia?

Question:

I have lived in Japan for 3 months now and I never got hooked with any Japanese woman. I never went to that club in Roppongi yet where they say that Japanese women are hunting for gaigin men. Besides most Japanese women really suck at basic English.

But I know a fellow from Jamaica who is engaged to get married to a Japanese woman, and I told them up front that no Japanese woman wants me. Not to mention religious differences, Most Japanese woman are not even Christian and if I do get a Japanese woman, I may have to drop out of the church. But I think the only women I am good for are those who are whorish, regardless of race or ethnicity.

If I go to Thailand women there are more likely to talk to me because they have better basic English skills. Women are more likely to also talk to me when I was in Korea, and I have met women from Vietnam and Indonesia who see me and say hello and can't speak English. Japanese women don't do that. But it's not only the language barrier. I feel that there is someting about young Japanese women that is causing them to be snobbish. One thing is that they don't talk to strangers which is why I have no friends in Japan so far. But generally like most northeast Asians, Japanese are like robots. That is what I see so far, so is it true that Japanese women are the most snobbish women in Asia?

Answer:

Most Japanese women are very shy, we dont have the culture to talk to strangers, you should talk to us first. We can be very sweet and sincere friends for foreigners if you get to know us well once.Break the ice!

What are the shoes that are worn with kimonos called?

Question:

They are like wooden flip flops, but what are they called?

Answer:

Well, there are a few different kinds.

The wooden ones worn with yukata are called geta. For the most part geta are way too casual for any kind of actual kimono, though certain kinds can be worn with casual kimono or might be worn as part of some geisha ensembles. The shoes worn with actual kimono are called zori and come in a wide variety of materials that vary depending on the formality of the outfit the shoe is to be worn with. Beyond that, there are some special types of footwear (e.g. okobo/pokkuri worn by maiko in Kyoto) but they tend to be rare these days. Most normal people only ever need to worry about geta and zori.

Trying to learn Japanese?

Question:

Only to read and listen to it, not write it. Can i stick to hiragana and katakana and leave kanji alone?

Answer:

Kanji is needed, unless you want your reading level to be below that of a 3 year old. Honestly, Kanji introduction starts young. There are some furigana in manga, but not in newspapers. I would suggest getting into kanji, they are not all that difficult and actually help a lot to made reading easier.

Does anyone have any experience withe heart English school in japan ?

Question:

If so can you share what your experience was like (I'm thinking about applying for a job as an ALT in japan)

Answer:

I don't have any experience with the Heart English School in Japan, but I have worked in the ALT industry in Japan for many years.

ALTs mostly work in Elementary and Junior High School as an assistant to the main JTE (Japanese Teacher of English). I can highly recommend teaching in Elementary or JHS with an ALT company as this was the most rewarding experience for me teaching in Japan, and you get the chance to participate in real school life with real students.

In most cases in order to work full time in Japan you need to have a University degree and you also require the backing of a company in Japan to sponsor your visa.

Most recruiters for English jobs in Japan will require the following:

1. Native English Speaker
2. Full Bachelor Degree (in any field)
3. Basic Japanese Ability

The market is really competitive now so they also prefer teaching experience and qualifications such as ESL, TEFL or CELTA.

Salary is usually around 240,000 - 255,000 yen per month depending on experience and qualifications.

Are there any Japanese beers available in the US that are brewed in Japan?

Question:

I noticed in the last decade or so all the mega-brand Japanese beers like Kirin, Soporro, Asahi, have moved or subcontracted to breweries in Canada (or Los Angeles). Are there any Japanese micro-brews available in the US, or any other Japanese beer available here that doesn't have that pure, clean Canadian water that tastes so foreign to us?

A related question: In the US the Japanese beers brewed in Canada are labeled "Imported", leading many to assume that they are brewed in Japan and shipped to the US. So what about when these same beers are sold in Canada? Are they the same ones brewed in Canada or are they brewed somewhere else and imported into Canada? If the latter, where are they brewed??

Answer:

How abut Rakuten?
You can find some from these pages.

Do You Like Mayonnaise?

Question:

Just wondering how many people hate it and how many people love it.

I hate it btw.

Answer:

It is mostly cultural. There are more Black-Americans who hate it than White-Americans. Japanese love it that you can even buy Mayonnaise Ice Cream. I grew up with it, and when we were poor, all I had in my lunch box is mayonnaise sandwich with a bit of sugar. I would mostly eat name brand mayo, but if non-name brand mayo and Miracle Whip are the only choices... non-name brand will do for me.

To celebrate the release of the movie "Battleship Yamato" real version

The sentence in your question is cut off in the middle. But I could find the rest on Youtube page.

Listen to "Yamato Suite" in brass band version which I took part in as an alumni in 2003.

This is a suite. The song you know well is in the 2nd movement. Do you have any idea where I am?

What Should I Know Before Moving to Japan?

Question:

My fiance and I are learning Japanese and we plan to move to Japan in a couple years. We've got friends over there but we don't get to talk to them much, anymore, and I feel somewhat rude asking them, too.

What things should I know about living there? E.g., what should I expect when my kids start school(I know they're much more strict on education over there, but I mean, like...do I have to walk or drive my kids to school or do they have buses? Do you have to pay a certain amount a year to use the bus like many schools do here for lunches? Do they have cafeteria food for younger kids or do they need to have a packed lunch? Etc.)? What should I expect in general?

I've never visited before, though we are going to spend a month there for our honeymoon, so I'm sure I'll learn a lot from the visit, but I'm simply curious. And sorry if I sound stupid. :)

Answer:

You are WAY ahead of yourself. Years ahead. You want to move to a country you've never been to ?
Think about it...I'd visit first. Japan is a different world.
The first thing to think about is work. Do both of you have four year degrees ? Do you have special skills a Japanese doesn't have ? It not, all ends here. You need a degree to qualify for a work visa. And a job offer before you get there.
You're not even married yet and you're already thinking about raising kids there ? I think you'd give that more thought !
Japan isn't an easy place to move to, even for a single person. And long term employment is not easy to come by. The basic rule is, if a Japanese can do the job, they will always be hired first.
I think your best bet is to go there for a visit and stay for as long as you can. I'm willing to bet you will change your mind.
