Only to read and listen to it, not write it. Can i stick to hiragana and katakana and leave kanji alone?
Answer:
Kanji is needed, unless you want your reading level to be below that of a 3 year old. Honestly, Kanji introduction starts young. There are some furigana in manga, but not in newspapers. I would suggest getting into kanji, they are not all that difficult and actually help a lot to made reading easier.
