What are the shoes that are worn with kimonos called?

Question:

They are like wooden flip flops, but what are they called?

Answer:

Well, there are a few different kinds.

The wooden ones worn with yukata are called geta. For the most part geta are way too casual for any kind of actual kimono, though certain kinds can be worn with casual kimono or might be worn as part of some geisha ensembles. The shoes worn with actual kimono are called zori and come in a wide variety of materials that vary depending on the formality of the outfit the shoe is to be worn with. Beyond that, there are some special types of footwear (e.g. okobo/pokkuri worn by maiko in Kyoto) but they tend to be rare these days. Most normal people only ever need to worry about geta and zori.
