What's your question about?

How does the school year work in Japan work?

Question:

I went to wikipedia, and found this:
'The school year in Japan begins in April and classes are held from Monday to either Friday or Saturday, depending on the school. The school year consists of three terms, which are separated by short holidays in spring and winter, and a one month long summer break.'
It was helpful, but not all the information I needed. When does the school year end, and when are the the holidays? Also, how long are the holidays, and how long are the school days?
Thanks.T.x.

Answer:

It will depend on the type of school but for a typical Elementary or Junior High School the following is usually true. The school year is from April to March with three main breaks during the school year. Summer Vacation is approx 5-6 weeks long in late July and August. Winter Vacation is 2 weeks long in late December and early January and Spring Vacation is 1 week long in late March. Classes are usually either 45 minutes long or 50 minutes long depending on which schedule the school uses for the day. There are usually 5-6 classes a day at school.

Classes typically start after morning homeroom at around 8:30 am and the last class is usually around 3:30 or 4 pm. A lot of kids have club activities and these will take place before school early in the morning from 6:30 am - 7:30 am and after school from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm.

Why do Japanese married couples stop sleeping together?

Question:

Hi, I live in Japan and I've heard of this many times. I remember one friend who married this beautiful Japanese girl, but after they got married and had their first child, she moved into a separate room with the baby, and never let him touch her again. He's thought about divorcing her and even asked me for advice but I didn't know what to say. If this is a common practice, then I'm sorry but I don't want to marry a Japanese girl.

Is there anything a foreigner can do if their Japanese spouse decides to do this once they are married?

Answer:

>she moved into a separate room with the baby

In that case, I think she started thinking that the baby is more important than her husband.

In other cases, couples got married (or do not have a divorce) just for money. So they do not love each other but stay in marriage. That's why they do not sleep together.

Addition:
>why would you want to sleep together with your wife after you get married and have kids?

That's an interesting phrase. In Japan, couples are required to be "father" and "mother", and do not stay as "husband" and "wife" after their children were born. I think this is one reason.

How do I say in JAPANESE?

Question:

How do i write this in Japanese? Any help is greatly appreciated, and saves my life :*

I have chosen this topic, because it is very actual, there are no books about this in slovak language and my degree from law and japanese history make me able to understand well about the japanese law. Law is part of the cultural heritage of any nation and by discovering it, you get to know the nation much deeper.

Thank you for all those who help, I will have one more question later today and then I will be the happiest in the world :D

Answer:

i have two quetions for you

first, would you describe the meaning of the word 'actual' in here in more detail? (ex. 'real' or some)
i want to edit the blanc after having your answer.

second, about your degree of law and japanese history.

if these are master's degree→修士号
bachelor's degree→学士号

Planning on going to Tokyo November, just wondering from the perspective someone who's there?

Question:

Will it be all good with the radiation and stuff? I haven't really heard any updates or anything for the last few months. Plus any cool things to visit that I wouldn't really find out about on tourism sites?

Answer:

Like thecheapest has said, the radiation has not affected Tokyo so far because it is far away from the disaster zone.

If you want to know about places to visit other than those on tourism sites, you can refer to http://www.jnto.go.jp/eng/location/regio…

The above website will be the most informative for interesting site seeing spots.

Question about going to japan as an exchange student?

Question:

When I am about 16 I want to visit Japan for a exchange program and go to school there for a little bit. Right now I am only 13 and am going to spend the 3 or 4 years until I am allowed to go to japan learning Japanese. And no, I am not going there because I am some "anime obsessed freak", but because I am interested in their culture. I have a question about fitting in there and working there. I know, stupid questions but whatever.

I have orange hair, blue-grey eyes, freckles, and pale skin. Obviously people are going to stare in japan. People in canada still look at my hair and comment on it. I was wondering If I'd like fit in? Purely based on looks (obviously I'm not going to act rude and obnoxious, I'm going to act like myself, nobody wants to hang out with someone rude). Will i get weird stares and rude comments? Like are the people there going to make fun of me and bully me because I look so different? Or are they friendly and actually want to make friends with me?

My second question is about jobs there. If I want to have a job there (when I'm like a lot older, just thinking about my future) can I get one? I was thinking about either a nurse or English teacher? Could I get either job?

*Serious answers please! Maybe answered by someone who has been in the same situation please. No rude comments either!*

Thanks!

(by the way, I am still learning a lot about Japan so if I accidentally offended any one in any way I apologize)

Answer:

It's good to have a goal and I'm glad you're interested in Japan. Please continue to work hard on your studies as well as study the Japanese language. I'm sure opportunities will present itself naturally when the time comes.

As for your appearances, I believe that you shouldn't be to concerned about it. You will always look different to the Japanese regardless. People might just be curious about your looks but it doesn't mean that they will treat you badly.

With regards to making friends, it's the same the world over. Some people would want to be your friend, while others will just avoid you. Remember you can't please everyone and be friends with everybody.

As for jobs, if you want to pursue a career in nursing, it would be necessary for you to attain native level fluency in the Japanese language, as well as attend a Japanese university to gain the necessary accreditation needed. Overseas degrees are usually not accepted. (e.g. Doctors who are trained in US are not able to practice in Japan unless they pass the medical exam in Japan)

Is it Japan Narita Airport's Mascot?

Question:

There are 2 pictures in this piece of news:
http://world.people.com.cn/GB/14697730.h…
(The news is about Japan Tokyo Narita Airport (成田空港) welcomes the first group of touirsts after the big earthquake in March.)

I want to know about the mascot on the left-side in the pictures, which has a blue face and '成田'(Narita) written on its body. What on earth is that? A penguin? A kind of sea bird?

And is it Narita Airport's mascot? I didn't find anything about it on Narita official website though.

p.s. On their website I only found some info about the other mascot, which stood next to it and wore a pair of green glasses, whose name is クウタン(Kutan).

Answer:

I live in Japan.

It's Unari-kun (うなりくん).
He is Narita City's mascot for sightseeing.

Unagi + Narita = Unari

Narita City is famous for eels (Unagi in Japanese). And it is famous for Narita Airport, too.
He is a mixture of an eel and a plane.

Sorry, I could find only the Japanese version:

I wanna go to Japan for tourism purposes, but I don't have a guarantor for my letter of invitation for my visa?

Question:

I am US resident but hold Vietnamese passport and I plan to go to Japan this summer with a friend for tourism purposes. So I know I need visa, but since this is just tourism, i have no "guarantor" or anyone to write me a letter of invitation as they require from their visa procedure. What do I do? Will my visa be denied?
The thing is my friend has relatives in Japan and we might stay there during our stay. However, I'm not sure if they will agree to write me a letter of invitation cos they don't know me. Anyway, I wonder if anyone has gone through the same thing and can advise me...
Many thanks!!!

Answer:

You can only ask them and find out. They are under no obligation though if they don't (and don't want to) know you. Japan has had lots of 3rd would people go to Japan for illegal work and never leave, so they are quite strict now - even if a lot of their economy depends on it.

How did the US help Japan?

Question:

I have to do a project on ways the US was involved with japan and how they helped them? does anyone know? thanks:)

Answer:

Right after the earthquake and tsunami disaster, US military in Japan dispatched a number of ships and troops to off the coast of the Tohoku area for search and rescue mission for the victims. In addition, they dispatched a large amount of emergency food for the people in shelters. Their great assistance was widely reported by the media, and many Japanese appreciate their Operation Tomodachi (friends).

Will North American guitar pedals work in Japan if you plug them?

Question:

I have a Jamman from Digitech and an MXR Carbon copy that I would like to bring to Japan and plug them in. I use a wall-wart for the Jamman and the other pedals are usually powered by a BBE Supa Charger. Could use batteries too, I guess, but not for the Jam Man.

Answer:

The voltage should be the same, but do check the frequency of your audio equipment. It is 50hz in Eastern Japan (e.g Tokyo) and 60hz in Western Japan (e.g. Osaka).

Question:

I'm trying to find this song on itunes but I can't find it anywhere! Considering the amount of views, it has to be on itunes, I just can't find it!

I tried typing in "AKB48" (I'm assuming that's what they're called) and I can't find this song!!

I also tried typing in "Ponytail to Shushu" and "Ponytail to ChouChou" and still nothing!!!

Help anyone please!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwXtaahxj…

Answer:

Well, some Japanese companies won't license their music to the US (assuming you live in the US) and it's not on iTunes US. You could either buy the CD / Single from an online store that ships Asain CDs (which are usually very expensive if you buy the japanese versions- i've seen 38 dollar singles) , request the song in the iTunes store : http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunes.htm… , buy the song on iTunes japan with a card you buy through a store that sells them (after creating an account with a Japanese address), or download it illegally. I have the same problem as you in iTunes, but with different artists, recently, I had to buy Koda Kumi's CD through an import site, which was a pain in the a$$.

What was Tokyo, Japan's population before the Earthquake hit?

Not enough difference to be concerned about. There was no damage to Tokyo. The only damage I saw was the top antenna on Tokyo Tower is now slightly bent.
Thousands of non- Japanese did move out shortly thereafter, but that was mainly in the north east area.

How do I say in JAPANESE?

Question:

I need to write an essay about my diploma thesis in Japanese, but I am not so confident with my language skills, so I will ask a few translation related questions. How to write in Japanese?

The thesis is formally divided into six chapters. In the first chapter the concept of the legal systems of the world is discussed. The second chapter was devoted to the historical development of the Japanese legal system, while the third chapter is to analyse the basic sources of law of Japan from a legal and theoretical perspective.

Thank you in advance, I will probably post more questions for help :) Have a nice day

P.S. thank you^^
are you ok about chapter 4-6?

Why does Japan's youngsters nowadays do not want to have children?

Question:

Just read about the news about Japan's population going to be half of today by 2050. Is this true, or is this just another over-exaggerated media hoax?

Answer:

I'd say it's due to the lack of happiness & fulfillment in most marriages & in their life, and lastly a stagnant economic development which seemed to be endless for such a long time. Deep beneath Japan is actually a nation, where people are constantly under tremendous pressures, stresses, and abuses ever since their childhood, just to strive-strive-and strive endlessly. Many of whom grew hatred towards their parents & themselves, thus fearing that they would became exactly as their parents & ended up as who they are, hence repeating the same mistakes upon raising their own kids.

The population issue is actually very complex and psychologically challenging to solve.

Why is it hard to find photos of the inside rooms of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, Japan?

Question:

If you were to google certain rooms of The Royal Family in Europe you would find certain rooms are well displayed. Only certain rooms because others are in use and The Royal Family do need there own privacy which I highly respect. But when you attempt to look inside the Imperial Palace it has become very hard to find at least one room. You can see photos of the guardsmen outside The Imperial Palace or you can see photos of when The Emperor and Empress invite guest but the photos are directly faced at The Royal Family. You can search on Youtube and see videos of HM at a state dinner and how grand the room is.

Am I searching at the wrong sites?

Its beautiful to see how Royalty live and it gives oneself a reflection on how the past, present, and future came to be. If anyone knows where I should be searching to see magnificent, historic, and grand photos inside the Imperial Palace (one photo will be nice to see) It would offer an opening to see how similar Royalty lives compared to us commoners. For example The Imperial Palace kitchen would be a photo of many words.

Thank you merely curious...

Answer:

I don't believe there are "magnificent"-looking rooms with historically valuable decorations (?) inside the Imperial Palace. Your expectations are out of focus.

The Imperial Families of Japan are not the "royal family" in European sense. The Emperor of Japan is "the symbol of the nation" as the constitution of Japan stipulates.

All the Japanese knows that the Emperor and Empress are living a simple and humble life for the well-being of the nation. They do not need any "magnificent" rooms or lavish decorations inside the palace.

How much Australian money should I take for a two to three week holiday to Japan?

Question:

I'm going over for around two to three weeks and am not sure how much to take. My boyfriend and I want to travel late december / early january and travel around Osaka and other major areas of Japan, but not necessarily Tokyo.

We have factored in around $1600 return each for flights. How much more would we need (in Australian) to factor in for accommodation (doesn't need to be fancy), transport between cities, food, entry into sites and general shopping (souvenirs, clothes, books).

Thanks in advance

Answer:

Hotel: Usually, you need $100 per night if you want to stay at a hotel.
If you want to save money, you need to stay at a hostel which will cost $30-50 per night.
If you want to stay at a luxury hotel, you need $200-300 or more.

Food, transportation and others: You need $50-100 or so per day. If you want to enjoy shopping, you need more.

So you need $100 for hotel and $75 for others per day. If you want to stay in Japan for 2 weeks, the total cost will be $2450.

Can someone help me with Japanese Verbs?

Question:

So I've been learning Japanese for 3 years and I've started on Japanese verbs and i'm confused. I'm not sure how this whole "dictionary form" works. So, for instance to eat is "tabemasu" and then you would change it for instance to "tabemashita" to ate. but what does "taberu" for instance have anything to do with it. And when asking a question like "why are you eating meat?" why do you say
"Doshite niku o taberun desu ka?" instead of tabemasu

Sorry if i've explained my question badly or its really confusing but could someone please just give me a general overview on how verbs in Japanese work. It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Answer:

Taberu is a casual form of tabemasu. Past tense casual form is tabeta (casual of tabemashita).

Japanese language(Help)?

Question:

Im still a beginner in Japanese,I want to know which one of this is right:

Sushi wa suki desu
Sushi ga suki desu

Manga wa omoshiroi desu
Manga ga omoshiroi desu

So which one is right, using ga or wa,if both are right, then when do we apply Ga or Wa?

Thanks

Answer:

Both are right
WA: is more general, like "I like Beans". It's also like the answer to a question
GA: is more specific, like "I like (that) bean". This isn't an answer, and is also as if youre saying it of your 'own accord'
anyhow, both are right

Can Japanese men marry foreigners?

Question:

I've heard from someone that if any Japanese man marry foreigners then they will loose their citizenship. Is this true? Please explain. Thankyou.

Answer:

No! It's not true. If they get married nothing changes. The woman can now apply for a spouse visa as opposed to a different type. If a Japanese man and a foreign woman have a child. The child is Japanese.

The only thing that might hold back a Japanese man from marrying a foreign woman is:

a) he is the eldest son and must stay close to his family home to care for his parents
b) he isn't interested in non-Japanese women
c) his family is against him marrying a foreign woman for any reason

What day does the 4 seasons start/end at japan?

Question:

and the dates of school festivals, school's summer and winter break, the time month they normally take exams, and other stuff related to a Japanese school.
I know this is a lot but thank you for reading my question.
PLEASE answer.

Answer:

The same as the rest of the world, but there is also an old lunar calendar they follow for holidays that are not celebrated. They just kind of note, "Oh today is the "First Day of Winter." You can read about it more at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_calendar#Seasonal_days

Classes run Monday-Friday, but students and teachers go to school on Saturdays and holidays to work and practice their club activities respectively. Elementary school children do not go to school on the weekend.

The major breaks from school are August and March-April. August is summer vacation (the students take extra study courses and the teachers teach them during this time, but f you are an ALT or NS you are free). I get about 2.5 weeks vacation. March is the end of the school year...and April is the start. I get about 6 weeks at that time.

Also, there is Golden Week in May which gives you three days off. Almost every month there is at least 1 national holiday that will get you a day off school, usually a long weekend.
