When did they build the (now) traditional homes in Japan?

Question:

I don't know whether traditional homes of Japan are still being made now. I want to know when they were built back in the day, and if most of them were built back in the day, instead of them being built now just because of tradtion, are there people living in them?

Answer:

The current generation of houses is different from that of a generation ago and that style is yet different from the previous generation. It depends on what you want to call traditional. The (now) traditional homes, well, I live in one I guess, as do most of my neighbors. My in-laws live in a house from the previous generation.

US Customs fees from Japan?

Question:

Well I have my eye on a used kimono from Ichiroya and it is 1.55 kg. It would come through USPS from EMS. When I ordered a Bento box in Nov of '08 and had it shipped EMS I didn't have to pay anything- just sign my life away to get it from the counter. Would there be any customs fees to get this kimono?

Answer:

It's pretty much impossible to say since we're not customs agents. I have never paid a customs fee on any of my international purchases in my life. On the other hand I know people who have, even though we live in the same country, ordered from the same country, and bought similar things. So yes, there might be customs fees on the kimono. On the other hand there might not.

Jobs in Japan that need workers?

Question:

To those living in Japan currently. I Plan on going to college this summer. I would like to work toward something that will grant me a job entry in Japan. Though I'd like to study something that actually needs workers in Japan. I'm not sure on teaching positions since a lot of my friends and people I know want to be teachers or substitute teachers in japan. So to all those living in Japan right now what types of jobs actually need workers right now? Like the type of jobs you always see in ads needing people?

Answer:

If you mean "jobs with much demand for workers", there is none now.

The after effect of the earthquake will set in from now. We also have power outage in and around Tokyo which makes many businesses suspend their operation for hours or sometimes days.

Many Japanese people are cutting their consumption after the quake. It puts leisure industry on the verge of collapse. For example, Tokyo Disneyland has been closed since the earthquake, 11th. There is no date for reopen.

I don't think you can get a working visa as a construction worker. It's a job Japanese people can do.

Questions about staying in Japan for over 90 days (specifically Cultural Activities Visa)?

Question:

My fiance and I would like to stay in Japan for about a year (give or take depending on what we can do). We don't want to just vacation, we want to really experience everything over a period of time. Researching this online, I came up with some articles that were a bit of a let down. Please bear with me =)

I came across this site: http://www.transitionsabroad.com/listing…

And a working visa isn't really an option since we don't have the experience or schooling that apparently Japan is looking for. So I came across the Cultural Activities Visa. My fiance is an artist with Japanese/Asia inspirations. He also does a lot of bonsai work. What are the qualifications to use this visa for 6 months to a year? Is it feasible? How would someone be able to live in the country if they are there under a visa that says they are working on art for no profit? Would you be allowed to get a job? Rent an apartment?

Also, for me to go, if he *could* use the Cultural Activities visa would I use the Dependent Visa? Would we need to be legally married in the US first?

Any help would be appreciated. I know that becoming a permanent resident is extremely difficult, but we would really love to stay in Japan (even just for 6 months). Thanks for reading this!

Answer:

1) you cannot be on spousal visa unless you are married (fiancee does not cut it)
2) as a US citizen, you can enter Japan on a tour sit visa for 90 days, leave for a day and return again for another 90 days. That should offer you the 6 months you are looking for
3) experience "everything" over a period of time: sad to say but the daily life in a Japanese town/city/hamlet/village/metropolis is no different than the life in a similar size town where you come from. You wake up in the morning, get dressed, go to work, work, go to lunch, return to work, return home, cook dinner (or grab something outside), sleep - rinse and repeat. Difference from your home area is the traffic, the commute, the signs, the food. You can experience that in a few weeks...

You should also know that living in Japan (especially as a short term visitor) will be VERY expensive. Figure at least $200/day (hotel, food, laundry, transportation, etc.) + the cost to get to Japan...

Hypothetical: if i were going to Shibuya from Phila. what airports would i use & the cost?

Question:

i started a a project that involves me planning to go to japan and i have everything done except for the flight information. give me as many possible details as you can, cause i'm extra behind without the flight info!
i would like to know what flights i would use.
i'm in Philly and the destination is Shibuya
i'd be staying at the SHIBUYA GRANBELL HOTEL from July 1, to July 10th or 13th
can i get round-trip ticket?
the amount doesn't matter since i'm not really going, just planning
and any other details you could give me!

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
i suck at traveling!

Keep Japan in ur thoughts! :(

Answer:

Closest airport to Shibuya is Narita (airport code: NRT)
From Philly, you could fly to Chicago and then to NRT or you could take the train to Newark and go non-stop to NRT
Yes, you can (and should) get a round trip ticket

go to your favorite travel website (e.g. expedia) and book your flights

Do know that when you arrive in Narita, you will be very tired (it's a long flight) and after clearing passport control and customs, you will still need another 2 hours to get to your hotel...

Is there a tsunami warning issued just now after 6.5 aftershock earthquake again? In Japan?

Question:

just heard it on CNN

Answer:

Nope. Nothing on the tsunami warning system.

Keep in mind that the main quake was over 5,000 times as strong as a 6.5.

Update: the tsunami warning system has now specifically said that there is ZERO chance of a tsunami. Which is far better than not saying anything.

Further update: there is now a "notification" (less severe than either an alert or warning) of "minor and extremely localized activity". And the aftershock itself has been downgraded to 6.1.

If I were to visit Japan in its present condition since the 2011 tsunami/earthquake, where would I go?

Question:

... that isn't in the danger zone? Got to stay away from Tōhoku-chihō.

Answer:

You are aware that probably 90% or more of Japan was in no way harmed by the tsunami or earthquake, right? Plenty of places in Japan didn't even feel it. Take the opportunity to get out of Tokyo and experience what the rest of Japan has to offer. Kyoto, Nagoya, and Osaka are all interesting places and are well away from Tokyo, the tsunami and quake-hit areas, and the Fukushima Daiichi plant. There are also plenty of other places farther south/west/southwest in Honshu (e.g. Hiroshima and the surrounding area), plus the islands of Shikoku, Kyushu, and Okinawa. If you could find a safe way you might even be able to go north to Hokkaido.

Tattoos in Japan....?

Question:

I have tattoos and i want to someday become a Japanese translator in japan. I have one on my forearm which will not be covered easily and i am wondering if people aren't going to hire me in the future because of them. I've heard that japan has become more open to tattoos and mine are in japanese and not offensive at all so.....

Answer:

Jobs as a translator are few & far between in Japan. Most of them will go to a Japanese as there's far more Japanese who know English than there are non-Japanese who can speak native level Japanese. I've known a few Japanese women who spoke English as well as people speak it here.
Tattoos in Japan are still connected with the Yakuza, although it has changed just a little bit. Some public baths still turn away people with tattoos.

Samurai's outside of the Bloodline?

Question:

**just encase I know that all Japanese people are not Samurai's, I'm only asking this because i love the Samurai History, same how other Americans like Spartans and Assassins creed**

Question: Were there any Famous or non famous but still known Samurai Warriors outside of the bloodline? (Foreigners, Farmers, rebellions, Ninjas or what ever)
As in they weren't born in a Samurai Family... If so, who were they and what was their story?

I'm asking this because I am very interested in learning the way of the Samurai, by learning their old code of conduct (Bushido)
Also, did their code give birth to new codes of conducts that follow the same Samurai thing but different rules?

I am creating a story with a modern Samurai and I was hoping to learn everything I can, to influence me to make him a better character.

I hope you give me a good answer and thank you for your time! ^_^

Answer:

Yes, there were quite a lot of famous samurai, particularly at the end of edo period who were not born samurai. KONDO Isami and HIJIKATA Toshizo for instance, who you can read about here: http://wiki.samurai-archives.com/index.p…
@ Robert. You must remember though that when MIYAMOTO Musashi was born, there was no differentiation between farmers and samurai. It was Hideyoshi who made people choose which profession they wished to pursue.

Any danger of radiation from Japan reaching Canada?

Question:

Answer:

I live in Maine and I heard the wind was blowing it away from us.

My uncle says we shouldnt give money to Japan, whats your thought on what he says about that:?

Question:

so my uncle said, a long time ago we had the san fransisco earthquake and everything was terrible and Japan gave zero money to us, they didnt even care, also he said Japan has a lot of money. I didnt have anything to say to that. what do you think? and what can i say next time?

Answer:

first off, japan is a big part of the nation. they are part of asia and not only that but theyre all at high stake. the reason they might not have give san francisco money was because it was one city in one state in North America. plus it hit TOKYO which is the capital.thats like the white house being attacked its a major worlwide problem. they have money yes, but theyre also in a recession. besides theyre going to die and the raidiation is going to engulf japan...where will they live???where will they move?? tell your uncle to think about if the US was being engulfed in radiation

Why does Iglesia ni Cristo says that the INC in Japan was not affected by the Earthquake?

Question:

Now the Iglesia ni Cristo (Eduardo Manalo) says that not one member or any local(Inglesia ni Cristo church) was affected by the Earthquake/sunami/nuclear meltdown; he claims that because the Iglesia ni Cristo is saved from those kind of disasters by God, not one member living in Japan was affected. Please correct me if I am wrong; but, isn't that cruel to say? Just because the victims of the Japanese tragedy were not members of the Iglesia ni Cristo, they were castigated by God? This demonstrates lack of common sense and lack of sympathy towards their fellowmen. Then on the otherside, these INC is partnering with the Philippines government to raise funds to help the victims of the Japanese tragedy. I just don't get it!

Answer:

It's easy to make up bold statements concerning religion (which has never been proven anyway) AFTER the disaster occurs.

For example: I have never been victim of a flood, so there for I am favored by God.
Or
I have never choked on an apple before, there for God wishes me to live

Silly right?
Claiming your faith saves you from anyone/thing but yourself is a great load of bullocks.

What do you like / dislike about living in Japan, and also living in USA?

Question:

I have lived in both places. When I was living in Japan, I missed USA. When I was living in USA, I missed USA.

I like Japan for their manner, quality and service. But do not like the too much of group mentality and how crowded it was. Also most are Japanese with hardly any Westerns living there.

I like USA for space and ease of access to simple things in every day life. I also like the fact its very international (everyone from all sort of Nationality lives there across the land), but did not like loud, rude, macho, selfish attitude.

Answer:

I lived in the USA and Japan.
Dislikes USA. Eating in a restaurant next to someone wearing shorts and vest and not being able to taste my meal because of the odour from under their arm pits. Ahrrrrgh, disgusting.

Likes Japan. Eating in a restaurant next to someone dressed properly. Mmmm, Enjoyable

Is it true that once a foreighner lives in japan too long, they become a little bit cold & distant?

Question:

Is that part of the assimilation process of becoming Japanese?

My Aunt told me that she had a friend Who was very happy-go-lucky & talkative & loud & expressive.

But she told me that after 3 years when her friend came back from Japan, that her personality changed and that now she is Cold & distant & reserved just like the Japanese.
& it changed her forever.
I think thats sad.
Is that what japanese society really is like? Cold & distant????
that is why she became that way?

Answer:

I didn't find the Japanese cold and distant. In fact I found them to be warm and welcoming, Couldn't help me enough. I made many friends and got on well with the majority of Japanese I met. Of course there was exceptions, especially the older generation who still had memories of another time.
Japan is different from other countries I've lived in so I had to adapt accordingly. For some people it's relatively easy, for others it's a bit of a nightmare apparently so I can understand why they may think the Japanese are a bit cold, distant and reserved.

I'm sorry your Aunts friends Is the way she is, and I wish her well.

Is it true that once a japanese experiences life abroad he can never fit back into japanese society?

Question:

if s, Why?

Answer:

Some of them experience something like that. But it's a bit exaggeration.

Japanese society is very strict. If someone experienced life in a free country like US, he might have some difficulty in fitting into Japanese society again. But "never" is overstatement.

Is japan in national debt?

Question:

Answer:

This question was brought up several times in the past.
The answer would vary according to the definition of "national debt."

Yes, Japanese government owes approx 1,000 trillion yen debt to the nation.
Most of them were accumulated by the government's deficit-ridden national bonds that have been continuously issued since 1994.
However, all of Japan's national bonds are held and supported by Japanese financial institutions firmly based on 1,400 trillion yen savings by the nation, which means Japan has no debt to foreign countries at all! This makes a big difference from the case in the US, which has a huge debt to Japan and China. An extensive portion of US national bonds are held by Japan and China, which means the US cannot design its own national budget without Japanese and Chinese money, which is not known by majority of US citizens.

We (Japanese) are always playing fair game, but Chinese are not, which is obvious by the fact that Chinese communist government would never give up their control over their currency in the international momey markets. Do you know why Chinese government can keep that arrogant attitudes in relations with the US? They know that US national budget would collapse if Beijing withdraw money from the US.

OK? Now back to my previous comment on the top: "The answer would vary according to the definition of "national debt." As long as the debt is limited among your own nation, you would be safe. It is like your parents borrow money from their own sons and daughters. But when you borrow money from someone in your neighborhood (no matter how they seem to be friendly), you never know what will happen. They may act like loan sharks next week or next month. That is what Chinese government "implied" (although they did not do it) in the past.

Wisely enough, the government of Japan has never borrowed any money from overseas; Japan is the second largest money supplier to the World Bank and IMF next to the US; and the largest to the Asian Bank. Japan's ODA (Official Development Aid for developing countries) were world largest for several decades up until recently. We do not need to borrow money from overseas.

Yes, our national budget is in red. But the nation is so rich that our financial institutions can support it based on our huge amount of savings in our banks. I know no country in the world who can bear 1,000 trillion yen (12.5 trillion USD) national bonds by its own nation.

Should we still travel to Japan?

Question:

My boyfriend and I have already booked and paid for our holiday to Tokyo travel dates 26/4/11 - 8/5/11. With everything going on I cant decide weather to still go or not, its more than just a holiday, I've been to japan a couple times before, the trip is to see my bestfriends who live there, they live in Sendai and were effected by the earthquake and tsunami. I really want to see them again, because I realise how lucky it is that they are ok.

I would like to hear the opinions of all, but mostly I would like to hear from those who are in Japan now and know what is going on.

Should we still go to Japan? Is it worth the risk?
I'm also not sure if i will get my money back for my flights...

Answer:

I live in Tokyo Tokyo would be fine, as would any place southwest of Tokyo, but Sendai, or anywhere northeast of Tokyo would not be somewhere that you want to go right now for a variety of reasons. The infrastructure problems and lack of supplies are serious problems. Not to mention the radiation threat. Where you are wanting to go is a full-on disaster zone, a serious disaster zone, as you should know from watching television.

Even if you have a non-refundable ticket, it is highly likely that the airline will let you use the value of your ticket at a later date, that date being within one year of when your ticket was issued.

Does anyone know any good schools in tokyo?

Question:

im looking to find a college to learn japanese, also one that will sponsor a student visa for me
anyone know any good ones?
cheers
lindy xx

Answer:

Any college will sponsor you a visa if you are enrolled.

Colleges in Japan are not a place to learn Japanese. It's schools where students with Japanese proficiency go and study something in-depth.

You better to go to a Japanese language school to learn Japanese.

Do the Japanese believe in demons?

Question:

Or are there just bad spirits and good spirits? If they believe there is demons, is there such thing as a good demon or are they all negative? What are they said to have looked like? (according to stories to such)

Thank you in advance~! :)

Answer:

Kind of, I believe there are demon like gods in Shinto. But a lot of Japanese aren't all that religious. We do say stuff associated with Shinto and Buddhism, but mainly it's a cultural thing rather than a religious thing, if you know what I mean.

I want to sell art on an auction site and then donate proceeds to the Japan tsunami relief...?

Question:

For those who have experience with donating to charitable organizations, which one or ones are working on the ground in Japan with the survivors of the tsunami? I've heard that the most efficient charities spend at least 75% of their budget on their programs and services and less than 25% on fund raising and administrative fees. As I understand, if requested to do so, the charity of one's choice will send copies of its most recently filed 990 forms which of course would be a good way to assess its commitment to transparency.

Answer:

Don't understand what you mean but you can always sell stuff on ebay and choose the "donate to charity" link i think there is a Red Cross symbol somewhere
