Japanese Elementary School Shelter Help!?

Question:

Okay. I Want To Send A Package To The Kesennuma Elemntary School In Kesennuma, Japan, To Give The People There Some Of My Things To Help Them Deal With What They Are Going Through. But How Would I Send The Package? I Live In Pennsylvania, And How Do I Send Airmail Packages To Kessenuma? Would I Write the Adresses In Both English And Japanese? Please Help, And Thank You!

Answer:

English is fine. Most of them should know English.

You can send it through UPS Or FedEx. Personally, I like FedEx. You can track their locations and it's always good to know where you package is.
As for the cost, it just depends on who you decide to go with and the weight of the package.

You can also just try calling up a location near you and they can give you more information. :)

Are there any restrictions on bringing California rice into Japan?

Question:

I live in the U.S. I'm gonna be visiting my parents in Japan, but I'm little worried about Japanese rice at the moment.

Answer:

I have brought in California rice - 50lbs - no problem at all as long as its a personal gift. But there's no need to worry about Japanese rice.
The legal limit for personal use though is 100kg per year.

Is there really that much radiation in Japan?

Question:

I am going to Okayama, Japan for about two weeks soon. Its about 500 miles away from where the most radiation is in Japan. My grandparents "who live in Japan" told us that the government is testing and throwing away any food that has a trace of "too much" radiation and taking a lot of measures to make sure everyone is safe from the radiation. I told my biological mom (i had to because its part of the custody agreement) that i am going to japan and the days i will be there. she started telling me that theres a lot of radiation there and i could die in the future or whatever, then i told her that i saw a chart and it said that in okayama there is less radiation than in new york. then she said "i heard hawaii has a lot of radiation too, so it spreads, so it probably spread to okayama." heres the thing though: she is ALWAYS saying things like this. she is pretty paranoid. even counselors and doctors know she is but she wont take medication. so, i came to yahoo answers to find out at least something a little closer to the truth than some paranoid person, so if anyone has an answer it would be gladly appreciated. :)

Answer:

There isn't much radiation in Okayama. As you say, it's 500 miles away from Fukushima.

Are there any Limos in Japan?

Question:

I am writing a book and my two characters just landed in Japan and they need to ride in style to her father's house.

Answer:

Limousine is not common in Japan. Since Japanese streets are narrow, it's difficult to drive with limousines.

I hope people don't say something false like "no one has their own house" in Japan.

My (not so rich) parents have a house in Tokyo.

How to address someone in Japan?

Question:

I'm writing something and it involves characters in Japan. The main character is American and is unfamiliar with their addressing customs. I would like to know all of the different ways they address each other, ex: "Where are you going now, Hikaru" As well as for doctors teachers etc etc. Addressing different age groups of both genders if they do that. Thanks

Answer:

There are many addressing ways in Japanese. But if he speaks only English, there is no need to know how to address in Japanese, right?

How much would it cost to send a small package/envelope to Tokyo?

What is school life like in Japan?

Question:

My dad got a job transfer and now we have to move to Tokyo. I'm leaving next week. I'm going into the tenth grade. Plus I'm a Korean who has lived in America for ten years. I'm better at English than i am in Korean. I wanted to know if it would change anything. What is my school life going to be like there? My parents are really harsh and wants me to go to a legit Japanese high school. Thanks.

Answer:

I'm not sure which high school you are going to, but you seem to have passed the transfer exam.
Is that an international high-school, or a Japanese private school? School life varies, you know..
---------------
I think your parents should respect your feeling.... I would listen my child's wishes/opinions first in the same situation. Personally, I wouldn't do that to my child (who is half-Japanese and raised outside of Japan and not fluent in Japanese, and would have more stress in a 'regular Japanese high-school')
I'd recommend you to go to the international school that has enrolled you already, where you would feel more comfortable. (because there must be multicultural atmosphere in there as most of the students have different family/cultural background)

How long is cram school for high school students in japan on average?

Question:

I'm not sure if you would call it high school, but let's just say how long do Japanese teenagers study at cram schools.
I read on wikipedia something about 4 hours or more, but they did not specify age and 4 hours is a lot, so I'd rather hear from someone who went/goes to school there.
And thanks very much for answering, I'm interested.

Answer:

Actually, this data shows that they at 2nd year of high school go to cram school for 9.1 minutes on average. But this is including those who are not going at all.
http://benesse.jp/berd/center/open/repor…

If you take average only on those who are going, it's 48.3 minutes according to this data.

But things are not so simple. Kids study more at 3rd year of high school because many of them need to study for college entrance exams. Actually, this data shows that the hour is higher at 3rd year of junior high school.

So it depends on which grade you are talking about.

4 hours is far from reality.

Losing weight while staying at hostel.?

Question:

I am a 20year old girl. Weight 62kg and height 5'2'' I am a student and i stay in a hostel. I have to mostly rely on the canteen food as there are not much other options for me. All that we find in our canteen is foodstuffs full of oil, spices and salt. I know about healthy eating, eating frequently and all that stuff. I even know in great details the effects of refined food on the body. But unfortunately i am not able to implement any of this knowledge as almost nothing i find in the canteen is healthy. I am a vegetarian. What should i do? Please give your suggestions. thank you.

Answer:

Men loose weigh in Japan and women gain weight. I went from 100kg to 75kgs. I was so unimpressed with Japanese TV I started to go to the gym twice a day.

You'll have to start making your own obentos.

I started eating Lawson's tuna salad and a block of tofu in the evening... as I said... I lost a quarter of my body weight.

'Conbini' rice triangles are often vegetarian and one fills me up.

There's a shop called 'Origin Bento'. I ate their mackerel bento 3 times week for lunch.

Anyway... walk around your hostel's neighbourhood and I'm sure you'll find something better.

Good luck

Chair.

You should also consider allowing yourself fish. It'll make life easier for you... your choice though...

What City is the Best to Live In/Raise a Family in Japan?

Question:

I'm talking jobs, parks, good schools, shopping, a very cultural Japan feeling. I want to FEEL like I really do live in Japan. I want the culture, the beauty, and the tradition. I'd love to see festivals, Japanese fairs and such.

Thanks! ♥

Answer:

Kyoto is a good answer, but the problem as I see it is jobs - that will dictate all the rest. I assume you don't have jobs yet? You could be an English teacher, but you can almost forget bringing up a family in Japan, if that's your plan - you'll both be working flat out to pay rent and put food on the table. You could try to get a job with a company. So what can you do which a japanese can"t? Maybe you have a PhD and can teach at a Uni - well, the one which hires you is the determining factor there. To come and bring up a family here, you're probably going to have to be working in a highly skilled profession, and at that point, you may have little choice where you work.

I think we'd need to know more about your potential to get a job before we could realistically hope to give you meaningful advice.

Will my qualifications from the UK be of any use in Japan?

Question:

im 16 years old, im planing on going to university. for a few years now,i've had the idea of living in Japan,so i want to know my GCSEs,A-levels and diploma form university be of any use in Japan.
also, if they are valid, are they seen as "better" than qualifications from other countries?
im asking this because im aware that in suth america, a qualification from europe is seen as "better" than one from south america.

Answer:

College degree is necessary to get working visa of Japan. So you will meet one condition for visa. But it's just one. You have to find a job.

I don't think it will help you find a job in Japan except for English teacher job.

Are Martial Art Dojos in Japan expensive?

Question:

About how much do they cost? I'm guessing cost varies depending on the art, but I want to know if they are more or less expensive than here in the USA. So far the Dojos here in the USA is about $100 - $200 per month. Very rarely you can find a few that cost about $80. So if anyone knows how much Martial Arts cost in Japan per month I'd appreciate it. If you could tell me which arts cost more than the others that be great. A list would be nice if possible?

Answer:

There are so many dojos in Japan. I don't think it's so different from US, generally.

What are Japanese apartments called?

Question:

Yes, please tell me what they are called, unless they're just called apartments. But I know that some Japanese hotels are called Ryokans. So I was just making sure because I'm working on a project, and it has Japanese apartments and hotels and what not and I want to make this as nice as possible. And if you have any good websites or anything like that I can learn from, I would really appreciate it. Thank you! ^_^

Answer:

I'll add some photos to explain the difference.
Regular Japanese apartments ARE called "apaato" アパート(same word, different pronunciation)
http://www.secology-apart.jp/images/bukk…
There are different types of them though, newer and bigger buildings (mansions) are also called "manshon" マンション http://www.homealive.net/area/aichi/nago…
The private houses are called "ikkodate" 一戸建て.
http://img01.eshizuoka.jp/usr/inet/CIMG2…

The old Japanese style hotels are called Ryokans.
But the modern western style hotels are called "hoteru" ホテル
