Why did the united states fail to achieve victory in Vietnam? What were U.S Police and objectives aboutVietnam?

Question:

What strategies were employed. By different U.S presidents and the military ?
What strategy was followed by the north Vietnamese and the Vietnam cong during the war?
What effect did protests in America have on the conflict ?

Answer:

The USA failed in Vietnam because the whole war was wrong. The USA had made the fatal mistake in supporting France against Vietnamese independence, in the hopes that France would be a strong NATO ally against the Soviet Union.

1) After WW2 the USA should have insisted upon Vietnamese independence and support the Ho Chi Minh and the Vietminh forces that had helped the USA fight the Japanese.

2) The USA should have helped install a democratic Vietnam.

Once the communist got involved on the side of the Vietnamese independence movement the USA was thwarted again by France. The USA was forced to support France against the Chinese-Soviet supported forces in Vietnam.

Once France failed and Vietnam was divided into a Communist north and non-communist south, the USA went to support the Government of the none Communist South Vietnam.

The US military policy was highly flawed, there was never a plan to destroy and occupy north Vietnam the plan was basically to be a whipping boy hoping that the vietnamese would soon get tired and convert to non communist.

The US tired to force a political objective by using military force.

All the presidents basically followed the same policies only making minor changes, adjusting the troop presence, bombing missions etc. Once Nixon figured out that bombing Cambodia was not an alternative to destroying north Vietnam he had the courage to finally end the fiasco.

A great opportunity was missed, because other concerns appeared more important than doing what was right.

Can you take a camera backpack into stores in Tokyo?

Question:

I will be traveling around Japan in a few weeks and wondering if there is any issue bringing a small Canon backback into stores with my DSLR and like 2 extra lenses in it?

Any suggestions for taking my DSLR around with me?

Thank you.

Answer:

Not a problem at all, but a lot of stores will get very uptight if you start taking pictures inside it.

I have a question about the Reagan Revolution.?

Question:

To what extent, and in what specific ways might the decade of the 1980's be proclaimed the "Reagan Revolution" ? Upon what political coalition was the movement built? What are the origins of the modern conservative movement? Who presently, are the revolution's chief political spear carriers? What are their political ambitions?

Answer:

Reagan's presidency has been termed the "Reagan Revolution," or the Age of Reagan in recognition of the political realignment both within and beyond the U.S. in favor of his brand of conservatism and his faith in free markets. The Reagan administration worked toward the collapse of Soviet Communism, and it did collapse just as he left office. Victory in the Cold War led to a unipolar world with the U.S. as the world's sole superpower. While the damaging Iran-Contra affair engulfed several Reagan aides during his second term, Reagan himself left office with a 63 percent approval rating, one of the higher approval ratings of departing presidents. After years of unstinting praise from the right, and unrelenting criticism from the left, historian David Henry finds that by 2009 a consensus had emerged among scholars that Reagan revived conservatism and turned the nation to the right by demonstrating a "pragmatic conservatism" that promoted ideology within the constraints imposed by the divided political system. Furthermore, says Henry, the consensus viewpoint agrees that he revived faith in the presidency and American self-confidence, and contributed critically to ending the Cold War.

The foreign policy of the Ronald Reagan administration was the foreign policy of the United States from 1981 to 1989. It was characterized by a strategy of "peace through strength" followed by a warming of relations with the Soviet Union, and resulting in an end to the Cold War when Mikhail Gorbachev rose to power.

As part of the policies that became known as the "Reagan Doctrine," the United States also offered financial and logistics support to the anti-communist opposition in central Europe and took an increasingly hard line against socialist and communist governments in Afghanistan, Angola, and Nicaragua.

During his Presidency, Ronald Reagan pursued policies that reflected his optimism in individual freedom, expanded the American economy, and contributed to the end of the Cold War. The "Reagan Revolution", as it came to be known, aimed to reinvigorate American morale, and reduce the people's reliance upon government. As President, Reagan kept a series of leather bound diaries, in which he talked about daily occurrences of his presidency, commented on current issues around the world (expressing his point of view on most of them), and frequently mentioned his wife, Nancy. The diaries were published into the bestselling 2007 book, The Reagan Diaries.

As a politician and as President, Ronald Reagan portrayed himself as being a conservative, anti-communist, in favor of tax cuts, in favor of smaller government in the economic sphere while actively interventionist in the social and foreign policy spheres, and in favor of removing regulations on corporations. Ronald Reagan is credited with increasing spending on national defense and diplomacy which contributed to the end of the Cold War, deploying U.S. Pershing II missiles in West Germany in response to the Soviet stationing of SS-20 missiles near Europe, negotiating the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) to substantially reduce nuclear arms and initiating negotiations with the Soviet Union for the treaty that would later be known as START I, proposing the Strategic Defense Initiative, a controversial plan to develop a missile defense system, re-appointing monetarists Paul Volcker and (later) Alan Greenspan to be chairmen of the Federal Reserve, ending the high inflation that damaged the economy under his predecessors Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford, lowering tax rates significantly (under Reagan, the top personal tax bracket dropped from 70% to 28% in 7 years) and leading a major reform of the tax system, providing arms and other support to anti-communist groups such as the Contras and the mujahideen, selling arms to foreign allies such as Taiwan, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq (see Iran–Iraq War), greatly escalating the "war on drugs" with his policies and Nancy Reagan's "Just Say No" campaign, ordering the April 14, 1986 bombing of Tripoli and Benghazi in retaliation for an April 5 bombing of a West Berlin nightclub frequented by U.S. servicemen, in which the Libyan government was deemed complicit, and signing the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 which compensated victims of the Japanese American Internment during World War II.

What do the newly developed suburban areas look like in Japan? I tried looking them up, but I can only find older suburban areas.

As Japanese population has been declining, there are few "newly developed suburban areas" in Japan created in the last 20 years.

Those so-called "new towns" were developed during 1960-90.

Doing a report on Hiroshima & Nagasaki, need help with intro?

Question:

Doing a report on Hiroshima & Nagasaki, need help with intro?
Does anyone have a good idea for the introduction sentence? I want to say something about deaths/long term effects in a interesting way. Not just blah blah so and so many people died it was horrible, that's boring because its just stating facts. Im not good with adjectives, so . . . . help?

Answer:

>"I want to say something about deaths/long term effects in a interesting way?"

What kind of report is that? There should be no way to write about 400.000 victims (at least) in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in "interesting way." I am sure the more you know about the victims, the more you realize the cruelty of the nuclear bombing.
It is not "interesting." No Way!!

What is the meaning of おーはよ?

Question:

Hello!

I was looking for the translation for this phrase "おーはよ"?

I tried Google translate and it became something like Over you...

Someone I know said that it was 'oohayo' but I'm not sure? Would you also be able to provide me with the pronunciation of each character?

Thank you!

Answer:

Yes, the characters above are pronounced "Oohayo" with a long "o". It is a variation of the normal way to say "Good morning" which is "おはようございます" (Ohayougozaimasu), and the short form of Good morning is just "Ohayou". the "u" at the end in this case doesn't mean you pronounce it like the English "you". Here it just means a long "o" at the end. The long hyphen-looking character "ー" means a long vowel. So this is basically a person saying "good morning" in a more slang type of way.

Cheapest way from Tokyo to Dublin?

Question:

Answer:

There is not cheaper way to go from Tokyo to Dublin. Sea travel is more expensive than flight.

I need help about my relatioship help me please?

Question:

My gf want be fly attendant can you help me where are hired now?
she lives in japan and she want be fly attendant can you help me where she can apply to this kind of jobs.
I wanna she be happy with her dream if you know let me know please
or tell me what kind of agency she can apply ?
thanks

Answer:

If she wants to be a flight attendant, you can help her searching online for job openings. Can you use yahoo or google search? Can your girlfriend? I hope so, or being a flight attendant may be too much for her.

American airlines also hire Japanese staff, although ANA and JAL are better airlines, and have prestige, she may have to work for an American company doing the flights from Tokyo to NYC and San Franciso. Those flights usually have at least 3 or 4 Japanese flight attendants. They have to speak English as well, though.

Can anyone tell me what Pearl Harbor Syndrome is?

Question:

Answer:

You could also call it “We Should Have Seen This Coming” Syndrome.

Americans were astonished by the attack, and by the massive damage done, but there were signs that were ignored or misinterpreted. Roosevelt's chief adviser had already said that war was imminent (and had even proposed launching a pre-emptive attack against Japan to make sure "we weren't taken by surprise".) Talks had broken down entirely. The Japanese had rejected Roosevelt's proposal of a 30-day truce. Commanders in Hawaii had done almost nothing to upgrade from a peacetime footing. Ominous signs gleaned by intelligence in Washington weren't passed on to those commanders.

Anytime some disaster happens, that, in hindsight, should have been less of a surprise, it's Pearl Harbor Syndrome. If you google it, that's the meaning that comes up, although individuals may ascribe other meanings to the term.

Would it be wise to return to Tokyo with my two year old son and wife who is japanese?

Question:

My wife's family in hachioji tell us that tokyo is fine and there is no radiation there! im not convinced but if need be we can go to another city in japan? does anyone have any ideas or should we keep away????

Answer:

This is an on-line Geiger counter based in Hino, a few miles north of Hachioji. The top graph is the current reading and the lower graph is from a year ago (before the problems). At the moment it's 18 CPU - the background radiation in Denver is *75 CPM and **25 CPM in California

http://park30.wakwak.com/~weather/geiger…

You can see that there is only normal background radiation of the moment.

Here's a scary map made on Friday 9th Dec and if you can read the kanji for Hachioji... it's safe.

Do Japanese automakers use patriotism to sell cars in Japan?

Question:

In USA American automakers rely heavily on patriotism to sell their cars. Do Japanese automakers do this in Japan or no? I was thinking probably not because most Japanese cars are already good but I was just wondering...

Answer:

Yes, you are right. Japanese cars are far more advanced, environment friendly, easy to drive and better looking. 99% of the Japanese are driving Japanese cars not because of our patriotism but because of the fact that Japanese automobiles are best in the world.
We know Americans are patriots, but why more than 30% of them are driving Japanese cars in the US?

What i MUST see in japan?

Question:

im planning a trip to japan. When should I visit? Spring or summer? What cities must I visit? List them. (for sure places like kyoto, toyko, osaka) what should I see in thoses cities? (like kaiyukan aquaium-osaka, nijo castle-kyoto, tsukiji fish market-tokyo.) Please name places or things like( sumop. Funky muesums or resturants. (like modern toliet). Name hotels and onsens. Famous things.

Answer:

Depends on your interests, of course. What might interest one person might not another.
But if you want some ideas, start with http://www.jnto.go.jp

Spring is far better than summer, which is extremely muggy and humid in most of the country.
You don't have to limit yourself tightly either - get a JR Pass and go all over, or you can fly across
the country at huge discounts on an ANA or JAL Japan airpass.

Place to see in Japan?

Question:

Hi! I'm going to visit Japan next week for 6 weeks and I will stay in Osaka. It's my second time in Japan... last time I visited Tokyo and northern Japan, this time I wanna see southern/western Japan, so I'm planning to go to Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Kanazawa, Nagoya, Himeji, Okayama, Kobe, Hiroshima, Miyajima, Fukuoka and Ise. Someone knows other good places to visit? Places not so popular like Tokyo or Kyoto, but very interesting... And some particular things to do/see in Osaka?

Answer:

There are many - go to see Sakurajima in Kagoshima - few people have walked near a live volcano, and it is like being on the moon. Or go to Aso in Kumamoto and look into a live volcano. Try a good onsen in Beppu or Yufuin. Or if you can, visit Okinawa.
For some Osaka ideas, try

It was said that even long before the WWII, the Canadians hated the Japanese already. why is that?

Question:

I don't specifically understand why the British Colombians hated the Japanese-Canadians when they immigrated to Canada. Why did they want to get rid of them, even though they didn't do such awful things to the Canadians? And what does it have to do with the Chinese??

Answer:

Canada seem to have followed the example of its neighbor to the south, in dealing with the Japanese in Canada.

What's in vegetarian maki rolls?

Question:

I had an order of sushi the other night, and it was very good, but I cannot figure out for the life of me what was in the vegetarian maki rolls. I know there was avocado, but there was another (pickled) vegetable that was bright yellow and very crispy... any ideas?

Answer:

The one you are asking about (in a Futomaki - I assumed) is a strip or shaved dried calabash bottle gourd (Ajitsuke kanpyou) that has been pickled. Here's a site you can check out:

http://hararie-japan-tokyo-tokyo.com/jap…

Although, sometimes they use strip of pickled Daikon radish (also called White Radish, Japanese radish, Oriental radish, Chinese radish) - depend on the restaurants.

What events happend in japan in 1940?

Question:

what was a important event that occurred in japan in 1940 ( only the year of 1940 ) not the decade

Answer:

1. 18 December 1939–11 January 1940, Battle of Kunlun Pass
The Battle of Kunlun Pass was a series of struggles between the Japanese and the Chinese in contention for Kunlun Pass, a strategically important position in Guangxiprovince.
The Chinese managed to halt the Imperial forces.

2. 8 January 1940 - Prime Minister Fumimaro Konoe popularised the concept of Hakko ichiu (literally, "eight crown cords, one roof" i.e. "all the world under one roof") by using it in his speech.
After Japan declared war on the Allies in December 1941, Allied governments produced several propaganda films citing the Hakko ichiu as evidence that the Japanese intended to conquer the entire world. In reality, the idea was to create a “Great Asia”, which would unite all major Asian countries into one great Empire.

3. March 16 – April 3, 1940, Battle of Wuyuan
The Battle of Wuyuan was a Chinese counterattack that defeated the Japanese invasion of the Wuyuan area. It ended with Chinese victory.

4. 30 March 19940 - The Japanese set up a puppet government called Manchuko in Nanking, China.

5. 1 May – 18 June 1940, Battle of Zaoyang–Yichang
The Japanese, by now frustrated by Chinese resistance, were seeking a quicker solution to achieve a Chinese surrender. Their attack, however, did not commit many troops or materiel, which enabled Li Zongren, the main Chinese commander, to repel the Japanese.

6. 9 July 1940 - Forced Hospitalization at Honmyoji
Forced Hospitalization at Honmyoji, also called the Honmyoji incident, was the forced hospitalization of leprosy patients living near Honmyoji Temple, in the western suburbs of Kumamoto, Japan.
July 1940 - Eruption of Oyama Vulcano
The eruption resulted in 11 deaths.

7. 20 August – 5 December 1940 - Hundred Regiments Offensive
It was one of the major offensives during the Second Sino-Japanese War.

8. 22–26 September 1940 - Invasion of French Indochina
Also known as the Vietnam Expedition, it was a move by Japan to prevent China from importing arms and fuel through French Indochina. Japan occupied northern Indochina, which tightened the blockade of China, and made continuation of the drawn out Battle of South Guangxi unnecessary.

9. September 27, 1940 - Tripartite Pact
Japan signs the Tripartite Pact (also known as the Three-Power Pact, Axis Pact, Three-way Pact or Tripartite Treaty). It was a pact signed in Berlin, Germany on 27 September 1940, which established the Axis Powers of World War II. The pact was signed by representatives of Nazi Germany (Adolf Hitler), Fascist Italy (foreign minister Galeazzo Ciano), and Imperial Japan (Japanese ambassador to Germany Saburo Kurusu).

10. October 1940 - Kaimingjie germ weapon attack
The Kaimingjie germ weapon attack was a Japanese biological warfare bacterial germ strike against Kaimingjie, an area of the port of Ningbo in the Chinese province of Zhejiang.

11. 15 November 1939 – 30 November 1940, Battle of South Guangxi
The Battle of South Guangxi was one of the major battles between the National Revolutionary Army (China) and Imperial Japanese Army. The battle ended with Chinese victory; by November 1940, Japanese forces had evacuated from Guangxi except from some coastal enclaves.

12. 25–30 November 1940, Central Hubei Operation

Dropping the Bomb in Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

Question:

When the US was about to do that did we mean to drop it during night to reduce civilian casualties? But then Japan intercepted us before we could?

Answer:

I don't see how dropping bombs at night would reduce civilian causalities. In fact, it would probably increase them.

The plain fact is, the United States didn't care for the number of causalities: they needed the war to be over as soon as possible AND demonstrate other countries (including 'allies' such as Soviet Union) their newly acquired might. That hundreds of thousands of innocent people would die in the process was of little consideration; after all, the Japanese did bomb Pearl Harbour with little regard to innocent lives lost there.

EDIT: If everyone is asleep, they have no chance to escape. Ergo, there are more causalities.
As for dropping the bombs on the production buildings:
a) it's a lie; the pilots didn't care much where they dropped the bombs, nor did they need to.
b) whatever building they dropped the bombs on, how would it matter? Those were atomic bombs, not ordinary ones: they killed everyone within miles.

What was the fighting in Burma, Papua New Guinea & Indochina about during WW2?

Question:

how much of the Japanese forces were in these areas and roughly when ? who they were figthing and how and how the Americans came into fighting with the Japanese? (after Pearl Harbour)

Answer:

The fighting in the Japanese War was "about" Japan's absolute need for supplies of oil. Their attempt to get them by seizing Russian oil-fields had been defeated at Nomohan (in Mongolia), forcing them to turn to the oil-fields of the East Indies, These were in the possession of the Dutch and the,British, so, when Hitler over-ran the Netherlands, and Britain stood alone, under heavy pressure at sea and in North Africa, the Japanese struck.- the landings in Malaya and the Dutch East Indies took place at the same time as the attack on Pearl Harbour. Malaya led to Burma, Java and Sumatra led to the other islands in the "chain".and the "extremities" of Japanese expansion eventually were Guadalcanal, and New Guinea, and the Burma-India frontier. At these places the "tide" was turned by the Australians and Americans in the South, and the British and Indians in the North. From then on, the Japanese forces were relentlessly destroyed by the Americans "island-hopping" North-westward across the Pacific, and the British driving South - even during the monsoon - through Burma. The ultimate invasion of Japan was, of course, rendered unnecessary by the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which brought about the Japanese surrender.

What are the things Japanese boys like and hate on American girls?

Question:

Generally speaking what are the things that Japanese boys like in American girls
And the things that they hate?

Answer:

OK, every single question we get on here requires the use of generalizations. Why does everyone have to say "Not every Japanese man is the same" and "American girls are all different." We are dealing with countries with populations of 120 million and 300 million respectively. Of course tastes and shapes and sizes are all different. That's why we have to use generalizations.
Western ladies are more outspoken than Japanese ladies, more direct, more aggressive and less likely to take a passive role, they don't like guys who live with their parents and they won't move in to the parent's house after marriage, expect the male to be able to cook and clean a bit on his own, and want freedom-to work, to go and do what they want, and say whatever whenever they want.

Japanese men come from a culture where gender roles and customs are different: nobody should be outspoken, things shouldn't be spoken directly, girls who aren't passive might scare them, wives who don't get along with husband's mother are trouble. American girls can't cook good Japanese food, and expect boyfriend to do his share of everything. American girls will talk openly about sex with their boyfriend/husband, and will not want intrusions from husband/boyfriend's parents.
Japanese girls are "cuter" than American girls. American girls are usually pretty intelligent and don't pretend to be stupid because it's cute like some Japanese girls do. They don't act submissive and may or may not dress up in school uniforms to satisfy the fetishes of their boyfriend.
Sometimes if a girl is fat, she thinks that is OK, and if you tell her to lose weight you are discriminating against her.

Does anyone know the Dream Dinners recipe for coconut shrimp?

Question:

Answer:

Here's a recipe that seems basically the same as Dream Dinners. You will need to make a couple of changes to make it exactly like Dream Dinners' but I'll discuss those after the recipe.:

EASY BAKED COCONUT SHRIMP
http://thaifood.about.com/od/thaiseafood…

Ingredients:
•18-24 medium to large raw shrimp, butterflied (tails can be left on)
•1/2 cup dry shredded/flaked coconut (baking type)
•2-3 eggs
•COATING MIX:
•1/2 Panko (Japanese breadcrumbs)
•1/2 tsp. salt
•1 tsp. onion powder
•1 tsp. garlic salt
•1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper OR dried crushed chili
•1 tsp. white sugar

Preparation

1.Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Also prepare a baking sheet by spraying it with cooking oil, or covering it with parchment paper.
2.Stir the Coating Mix ingredients together in a bowl. Set aside.
3.In another smaller bowl, lightly beat 2 eggs. In a third bowl, place the shredded/flaked coconut.
4.Holding the shrimp by their tails, dip first into the beaten egg, then in the panko mix to lightly coat, then dip back in the egg, and finally roll in the coconut. Lay the shrimp on its side on your prepared baking sheet. Depending on the size and number of shrimp you're making, you may need to use one more egg. Tip: Since they are going to be baked, avoid over-coating, or your shrimp will be flat on one side.
5.Bake on the middle rack at 425 degrees for 15 minutes, or until coconut is lightly toasted (light golden-brown). Turn the shrimp halfway through baking

CHANGES

I found the ingredients here: http://sanbrunodinners.blogspot.com/ . (See the July 9th post.)
1. Add flour and cornstarch to the coating.
2. Replace the eggs with a mixture of egg whites and buttermilk.
3. Replace the onion powder and garlic salt with chili powder.

That's it! Good luck!

Answer:

I don't know exactly what tomorrow will bring me,
but I want a future with you here within my reach.
Yeah it's true, yeah it's true, I want you and everyone
To join me while I'm loopin' through time!

Each time we meet we just keep fighting, then make up
That's even though I know I like you very much
But please don't ever stop, or these feelings I've got
might turn into something unpleasant...

You know I'm not the kind of person who keeps on
Doing the same thing every day; life's not that long!
So let's just end it all, and break this mental wall,
stopping all the fun!

It is impossible; escaping from yourself
So you must face up to the truth
When youre weak or youre hurt, or youre feeling all alone
Try and smile a little while, and then see how it goes

Looking into the sky, which is much bigger than I,
why do my dreams glisten and bring hope into my eyes?
It must be because of all the smiles in life,
that seem to be surrounding me all the time.

I don't know exactly what tomorrow will bring me,
but I hope that I won't end up all alone again.
Yeah it's true, yeah it's true, I want you and everyone
Let's make a change by lookin' through sky!

When you get tired, you start getting all worked up
Start talkin' back to people like "yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah"
But there's a way to solve your problems peacefully
You just need to come up with a plan.

And after all, I still want some thrills in my life
I keep re-living the same days, to find the light
Let's just forget it all, and repaint all the walls
Start our lives anew.

It's something I should know; how to just take it slow,
But I scream when life gets too tough
And I'm sure there is still lots of hope in all our lives
We just have to try our best, and see what we can find

Now these clouds in the sky are blocking all of the light
But I know, somehow that I can make the sun shine
And as long as it is, I'll do anything. I believe I can even fly through the sky.
I don't want tommorow to be boring, and stay home
Let us go far as we can, to places we don't know
Hurry up, hurry up, let's find whatever we can
But we've already found this new day!

Does this girl like me or just very friendly?

Question:

I'm studying abroad right now in Japan. This one Japanese girl has me slightly confused as to her intentions. I recently decided to try to make more Japanese friends in my classes and she seemed very nice, friendly, and dedicated to learning English (she's probably one of the better students when it comes to practicing English).

So, I got her phone number and later texted (I was told this is how things work in Japan) her to ask if she was free next week and said she could join me for dinner. We agree to next Sunday and agree to meet at the station. Come Sunday, she texts me half an hour before meeting saying "Let's meet at the Christmas tree ;)" We go out to eat dinner and halfway through she gives me a Christmas present: two folded paper cranes and some store bought "Merry Christmas" chocolate from Takashimiya. I'm actually very surprised and happy. However, this also makes me wonder, since Christmas is supposedly a couples day in Japan, from what I have heard. I said I'd repay her with a present of my own and she said "Your words alone are a present." though was clearly very happy I'd give her one.

Afterward, I said we could have dinner again soon and she said "Oh, do you want to go to Chinese restaurant?" (we had talked about one briefly earlier, as I can't find any and I like Chinese food). I said "Sure, we can go sometime next week" and she said something like "Oh..next week?! Oh no! Oh...next week...next week...I'm not sure if I'll have any time. If I do, I will let you know!"

So, what is it? Is she just really friendly or does she like me? I went in assuming it'd just be a friendly dinner since I don't even know her that well (we're in the same group for a group project, but we only ever talked about the project). The Christmasy stuff in particular confuses me since I've been told it's strictly a couples day in Japan.

Answer:

She might....she did go out for dinner with you. If she just gives the 'let's do something together sometime' line and never gives a firm date and commitment, then you know it's just the tatemae. And she suggested going to a Chinese restaurant. But maybe she has other appointments. If you are talking about the week after Xmas, which is New Year's, many families spend them together just as in the West many families spend Xmas together. So don't rush things and don't push her.
Wait til you meet up again - also if it's just a casual thing she probably won't wear anything special, but if you notice she is dressing up in something fancier and high heels then to her it is probably more of a date. So try and get to know her better, and what she wants to talk about - that will give you a lot more clues.

Women who live in Japan. Where do you buy your shoes?

Question:

I don't want to buy expensive shoes at department stores.
When I was in the US, I bought shoes at Aldo, Payless shoes and Target,Delia's. (I'm 22)

I want flat shoes and flat boots for everyday wear and so far I checked out several shoe stores but it seemed almost all shoes have heels(why?!) and I didn't like the design at all.
I want SIMPLE flat shoes/boots.

Tell me where I should go shoe shopping!

Answer:

Jusco and ABC Mart sell flat shoes, as do many independent shoe shops. I don't know where you live, but I've never had problems buying flat shoes.

I have 3 days to visit kyoto and osaka. I will start by tokyo. Please advice how to start and where to visit?

Question:

Answer:

You give no info about your interests, so it's rather hard to give concrete ideas.
There is so much to see, but a few places to see in Tokyo are:
Harajuku/Meiji Shrine on a Sunday to see the bizarre fashions
Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa - one of the famous temples every tourist goes to see
Odaiba at night for a real trip - try the ferris wheel and don't miss the Statue of Liberty and Venus Fort
See Love Hotel Hill in Dogenzaka near Shibuya Stn. at night for something uniquely Japanese
Tsukiji Fish Market at the crack of dawn.
Akihabara for the electronics.
Shinjuku and Shibuya at night for the endless lights and neon.
Ginza for the overpriced shopping.
Yasukuni for a real experience of NIhonjinron.
Tokyo Metropolitan Gov't Building in Shinjuku (better view from the top than the Tokyo Tower, and
all free!)
Roppongi for the ex-pat environment

For the Kansai area, Kyoto has numerous temples and shrines, Kiyomizu and Kinkakuji are some of the most famous. You should see http://www.jnto.go.jp for more info, and be sure to stop off at the tourist info office just across from Kyoto Station for lots of maps and info.
Since time is short, I'd say skip Osaka entirely - there is little there to see that you won't see more of in Tokyo. Instead be sure to go to Nara to see Todaiji and the Great Buddha; it is like the Taj Mahal of Japan.
If you plan to go by train, look into a JR Rail Pass - it can save a ton of money. There is more info

I will be in Tokyo for New Year's Eve. What are good clubs to go to for New Years? Will I have to purchase i?

Question:

Will I have to purchase in advance? Also, has anyone been to tokyo for new years when it is congested? will i be able to get around? how much chaos will it be compared to busy season in NY or Chicago?

Answer:

Tokyo will be more or less dead for New Years Eve, and the following 2 or 3 days. Same with most cities in Japan. There might be some clubs open that cater to foreigners, but I don't know. I had a lot of trouble finding anything open in Osaka during New Years a few years ago. Oshougatsu (New Years) is a time to be with the family, it's not at all a party day like it is in America.

In 1945 US bombed Japan with an atomic bomb. How many died after that? and is there any danger now?

Question:

Answer:

In Hiroshima, approx 140,000 civilians were killed on the spot and another 60,000+ victims died by the end of 1945.
In Nagasaki, approx 80,000 civilians were killed on the spot and another 60,000+ victim died by the end of 1945.
Many more victims in both cities died of diseases caused by nuclear radiation over the years.
Today, both cities are totally safe from the radiation.

@Vinegar Taster
I have never said anything against you. But I have to tell you this; at least 60,000 more victims died of radiation-related diseases in Hiroshima and Nagasaki respectively. All of their names are enshrined in A-bomb memorials in their cities.

>Radiation was never really a problem as both bombs went off over a thousand feet over the city?
What a big lie and How ignorant you are!
"Little Boy" (Uranium bomb) detonated 600 meters over the city of Hiroshima.
"Fat Man" (Plutonium bomb) detonated 503 meters over the city of Nagasaki.

Japan, America, and Germany Apologizing?

Question:

America apologized to Japan for the atomic bomb, Germany apologized for the massacre, but that leaves Japan why don't they apologized for their past? I know not all countries apologized everything they've done because they may still feel bitter or something, but Japan is suppose to be a country full of respect. Do YOU think that they should apologize or do you think that they shouldn't because it was the past. I think they should; how about you?

Answer:

Japan did not want to start war with the U.S.
It was the U.S. who provoked the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Do American happen to forget how the U.S. got to attack Iraq? Amnesia?

The testimony of a faked 15yr old Kuwaiti girl stirred up the anti-Iraqi sentiment among the innocent American citizen, which threw the U.S. into the war with Iraqi in 1991.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmfVs3WaE…

Herbert Clark Hoover, the 31st President of the United States (1929–1933), blamed Franklin D. Roosevelt for throwing the U.S. into an set-up "undeclared war with Germany and Japan".

Another "major blunder," Hoover thought, was FDR's decision in 1941 to throw the U.S. into an "undeclared war with Germany and Japan, in total violation of promises upon which he had been elected a few weeks before." Roosevelt's "total economic sanctions" against Japan in the summer of 1941, and his "contemptuous refusal" of the Japanese prime minister's peace proposals in September, Hoover saw as the crucial precursors to Pearl Harbor. The day after the attack, Hoover told a friend that FDR's "continuous putting pins in rattlesnakes finally got this country bitten."
