Are there any mistakes in my Japanese essay?

Question:

Any help is truly appreciated. My japanese is not so efficient, so if there are any mistakes or perhaps something sounds weird, please say so!

去年の夏、私はりょうしんと友達といっしょにニューヨークに行きました。町の中で…
私のいとこのけっこんしきのあとで、かんこうに行こうと思っています。ちずをしらべて…

Thank you in advance !

Answer:

Your sentences are cut off in the middle. You have to put a break (using Enter key) to show all.

But on the given part, your essay is perfect!

Addition:
Actually, your article is nearly perfect although it's better to use more kanji to look like more sophisticated.

>きれいなドレス買っておかなくちゃいけません!
きれいなドレスを買って....

This is the only mistake you made.

Why isn't Japanese needed as an English teacher?

Question:

If, for example, I go to Japan to teach English, why don't I need any Japanese skill? If I'm explaining what an English word means, how do I explain it to them?

Answer:

Actually, it depends on your teaching situation.

If you are an ALT in a school (say a high school of a junior high school) you will be working with Japanese teachers of English, and they will generally be the ones explaining the grammar. You won't have to explain it at all, and if you do they will probably want you to do it in English.

If you're at an eikaiwa, many eikaiwa don't want you to use Japanese in the classroom at all, and they figure that the easiest way to accomplish that is to just have teachers who can't speak Japanese. (Incidentally, it is actually possible to learn a language with little or no explicit grammar instruction in your own language -- many immersion programs work on this sort of target-language-only model.)

If you want to teach at a university (or find some way to be a regular, non-ALT English teacher), you will need to have proficiency in Japanese, but it may not be related to your actual teaching.

Regardless of what kind of job you want, I suggest that you learn Japanese anyway. Even if you never use a word of it in your job, every word you can speak, read, write, and/or understand when you hear will make your daily life in Japan that much easier.

Questions about hiragana?

Question:

after learning the hiragana characters, do you have start learning the words made up of hiragana?
if so, then how much words do you have to learn?

thnx

Answer:

The best way is learn Hiragana followed by Katakana and then Kanji.

I recommend a book called An Introduction to Modern Japanese by Osamu Mizutani & Nobuko Mizutani. After studying this book you will be able to read all of the hiragana and katakana, recognise a lot of basic words in kanji, and have a good knowledge of grammar.

5. too many nice people who will kindly help you and too many bad-mannered, spoiled kids on the street at the same time.

Where can I order a hadajuban online?

Question:

I am having trouble finding a website that offers this, I would also like to buy a nagajuban and kimono from the same place.

I don't know about hadajuban specifically for men, but you can get nagajuban and kimono from Ichiroya, Yamatoku, Shinei, Kimono Market Sakura, Bokunan-do, and Rakuten. If you are willing to use a shopping service you might also try Yahoo Japan Auctions, and if you know how to separate the junk from the good stuff you might also try eBay.

Mochiko and Rice Flour?

Question:

What's the difference between Mochiko and Rice Flour?
Both are Gluten-free, so is something added to Mochiko to make it "sweet rice flour" or is it just ground up rice?
I heard that when people refer to Mochiko as "Glutinous Rice Flour" they say that only because it's sticky, not because it has Gluten in it. I've made Dangos with just my regular Rice Flour and the dough was pretty sticky.
So.... what's the difference between the two? Could I replace Mochiko with White Rice Flour?

Answer:

Mochiko is Japanese for Rice Flour. If it's too sticky, just add a little bit more flour or less fluid before cooking.

You might want to try flavored liquid with your Dango like something from Torani, or juice flavor drinks (not the actual juice)...

How to dress in Japan?

Question:

I'm going to Shingu, Wakayama soon, and I'm not sure how to fit in without looking like a freaky Japanese wannabee. What's something I can wear that won't make me look like one of those lolita girls, but that won't get me weird looks? Basically I'm asking what people wear on a normal tuesday in Japan, not those crazy high platforms or frilly skirts or anything.

Answer:

Just wear your regular clothes. Japan is a different country, not a different planet.

How much will it cost? I really am thinking about becoming an exchange student and Japan sounds really neat to visit. I want to visit Kyoto because it's really beautiful. Am I gonna have to speak Japanese, because I know only a few phrases in Japanese (I've been studying it for about a week). Plus, my dad doesn't know I want to visit Japan. I don't even know if he'll let me visit japan in my high school years. I'm in eighth grade, and I was thinking about visiting Japan in my sophmore or junior year. I'd really like some advice and tips..

Answer:

It's good idea to visit Japan before you decide to try to be an exchange student.
A lot of people ask "how can I move to Japan?" even before they visit here to see the reality of our country. You are much better than those people.
Come and visit Japan first. You can get much information that you need.

What's the nicest type of sushi?

Question:

I tried the salmon sushi and I thought it was horrible. So can you please recommend the nicest type?

Answer:

My favourites are:

Makizushi (巻寿司) which is a rolled sushi. I really like Salmon roll, Cucumber roll and Avocado roll.

Nigirizushi (握り寿司) which consists of a bed of sushi rice, usually with a bit of wasabi, and a topping draped over it. Favourite toppings are salmon (sake), tuna (maguro) and prawns (ebi).

Inarizushi (稲荷寿司) which is a pouch of fried tofu filled with usually just sushi rice.

I enjoy my sushi with a little wasabi and soy sauce and like to have some pickled ginger to cleanse the palate after each sushi.

Which one is better for foreigner who likes Japanese tradition? Edo Tokyo Museum or Tokyo National Museum?

Question:

Answer:

Yes, Edo-Tokyo Museum is like a theme park focusing on Edo period. In addition to artistic works, they display a large number of daily products and items that are actually used in the Edo period. It's really fun to be there; you can "feel" the ordinary people's life styles in those days. Their exhibits change every few months according to the themes that they focus on. So, Edo period fans (yes, there are a large number of "Edo period fans" in Japan) repeatedly visit there every time new exhibitions are held. I have been there four times, and maybe more in the near future.

Tokyo National Museum is a very prestigious museum in Japan. Their collections of art works of ancient and medieval period of Japan is just astonishing. In addition to Japanese arts, many valuable Chinese arts are also exhibited. It is worth to visit at least once.

Is it okay to visit Japan next year?

Question:

I'm a university student and I was chosen as a Japan exchange student. At first I was very glad but after watching all the news about radiation in Tokyo, I start feeling that I made a bad choice.
What should I do? Do I need to cancel the right of Exchange student? I have 5 days to decide whether I go or not....

FYI:
I'm supposed to be in Shinjuku for 4 months from Apil,2012.

Answer:

Tokyo is safe to visit right now.

News on radiation is overblown and most of the cases have NO connection to Fukushima. For example the most recent case, was old powered form used in paints found in an old house from the 1950s, it was not uncommon for radium 226 to be used in florescent paints in the 1950s (radium 226 is not used in nuclear reactors), no danger at all to the public, nor was it connected to the nuclear power plant at all.

Again just SENSATIONALISM news. People seem to go ape crazy these days at even the mention of the word "radiate" when one needs to study these facts objectively.

Truthfully speaking, no matter where in the world you are, if you went out with a geiger counter (radiation detection device) you will find "hotspots" in your own neighborhood that appear to be higher then your surroundings. This of course is usually very explainable by many reasons and usually safe.

Each day the earth and yourself is pounded by radiation from all sources (the sun, rocks in the ground, your phone, the computer you are sitting in front of).

Yes you should go, or you can fall into the crowd of mass hysteria of godzilla and mt. fuji exploding and not go to Tokyo. Your call.

Should I buy train tickets online to travel around in Tokyo, Japan area?

Question:

I plan on staying in Nerima-ku, Tokyo. I also plan in visiting places like Akihabara, Shinjuku and any other place similar to these. So, I was wondering if I should buy train tickets online (which will cost me almost $800 USD for 21 days and I plan on staying for 30 days) or should I just buy train tickets locally? Thanks for the help!

Answer:

If you are only going within Tokyo, then you can get a subway day pass for all lines for about 1000 yen.
If you want to travel all over the Kanto area, or even farther up to Aomori, then you might look into getting a JR East Pass.
See http://www.japanrailpass.net for more info.
The full JR Pass which you need to get before going to Japan is worth it only for long distance travel across the country and back. If you are staying in Japan for 30 days and only staying in Tokyo, it would be quite a shame - if you haven't seen it all before, it is well worth going - also quick and efficient.

Indian vs. Greek vs. japanese vs. chinese vs. italian vs. spanish vs. mexican vs. french ? (in cuisine)?

How much money (USD $$$) should I save up for a 1 month trip to Japan?

Question:

I plan on going to Japan next year from July 1st to August 3rd. My plane ticket will cost around $1300 and I plan on staying in a homestay home which will cost me between $140-$780 so if you add the cost of the plane ticket and homestay home together it'll be around $2000. So, my question is how much money would I need for everything else (food, souvenirs, train tickets etc.)? I'll be staying in the Tokyo area and every other place I want to visit are between 30 mins.- an hour by train so I don't have to worry about spending too much of travel cost. Thanks for the help.

Answer:

Well, if you are on a homestay, they will feed you at least 1 or 2 meals a day, right? If so you are talking about a meal out, plus travel here and there. Not very much at all then, if your place and food are largely covered. You can get a subway day pass for 1000 yen, and for souvenirs it is entirely up to you - a few bucks for one to the sky's the limit. You can also eat a reasonable meal for about 1000 yen,
or if you want to economize less by getting a bento or some food at a supermarket or grocers.
So it's up to you - you should have enough to cover an emergency, and it's easy to blow a wad of dough in Japan if you're not careful, but otherwise you don't need a thousand a week by a long shot.

Cuteness in Japanese Culture?

Question:

All of you Japanese culture history buffs/ lovers out there!!
This is probably gonna be a series of questions about Cuteness in Japanese Culture so it would be nice if you could help me out a bit.

My question is: How did the whole cuteness thingy start?

This question actually gets asked a lot, and the typical answer is ‘It’s simply a cultural thing”. YES but culture doesn't just spontaneously appear out of thin air, right?

So from what does this unique phenomenon actually stem from? Here is a great article that might be a nice start:
http://www.psychologytoday.com/articles/…

Answer:

The link given is interesting. And it's very true. Yes, I think cuteness tells a lot about Japanese culture.

Compare:
a) Elizabeth Taylor vs b) Audry Hepburn
(sorry pretty old actresses but they are often given when comparing your culture and ours.)
a) red rose and b) soft-pink cherry blossom
a) veteran vs b) freshman

Japanese people are more comfortable with a) because they are all cute. Or you can say they look all modest, or have some kind of immaturity, which they feel easier to get closer or "harmonize" with.

"Japanese women are usually portrayed as cute "its sooo kawaE!!!" rather then sexy, elegant."

Exactly. Meg Ryan, Cameron Diaz or Sofi Marso appered more in Japanese magazines for young generation or TV-CMs rratherthan Angelina Jolie or Sharon Stone.
"Red roses are beautiful, but something you just aappreciate from a distance...."

Who changed the way handcuffed people are shown by the media in japan?

Question:

Answer:

What do you mean by "changed?"

Media report of "handcuffed suspects" has not changed for the past few decades or more.
Japanese media is a slave of law enforcement agencies. Police would not let the media take pictures of suspects unless they (media) obey the police "instructions" which is not written, but non-verbally understood. Otherwise Japanese TV stations and newspapers would be expelled from "the press club" which is under the control of law enforcement authorities.

The whole nation of Japan know this. If you can understand Japanese, you can tell that all the major TV stations in Japan read exactly the same paper when they report police activities in their evening news of the day. The media can shoot their own pictures; however, the areas for their camera crew is limited by police. As a result, all the pictures look the same more or less, regardless of TV stations and newspapers.
