Is salaray of 200000 yen/month in hand enough to live in yokohama (+company paid house, utililities, transport)?

Question:

got a offer from MNC to work in yokohama when company will be paying for my stay (House utilities daily transport). Apart from that after deducting all taxes i shall be getting close to 200000 yen for food, daily expenses. Is that good enough to survive in yokohama. Will there be any saving opportunity. I am going to live alone. I prefer going out on weekends as well. ... Please suggest

Answer:

Yeah, it's enough. That's about 50,000 yen/week, or 7,000 yen/day. I'm guessing that the transport fee is the standard situation, which means you'll have to pay for travel when you are out and about on your own. 7,000 yen/day will go pretty quickly when you go out on weekends.

To keep things in perspective, the average 'pocket money' for Japanese men, (an allowance given by the wives) is at an all time low. They have to make do with either 32,000 or 36,000 yen/mth, forget which, which is less than half the 1990 allowance of about 69,000 yen/mth. So you're doing better than the average Japanese husband. Not bad for starting out. Of course the Japanese salarymen are saving money for the kid's education, retirement, etc, something you won't make much progress on.

How much money would a make in a year being a beautician in Tokyo Japan?

Question:

I want to do hair but in Tokyo but I want to know how much I would make

Answer:

None. To get a work visa in Japan you need a four year degree and a job offer before you get there. You would also have to take tests to get your license there. The tests are in Japanese.
Also realize most Japanese women wouldn't go to a non-Japanese beautician. Most aren't comfortable going to a non-Japanese. You need native level Japanese to chat with them. And not being Japanese, you would have nothing in common with them.
Tokyo is the hardest city to find work in. If a Japanese can do the job, they will always be hired first.
Sorry if I seem too harsh in my answer. But that's how life is in Japan.

Where do tsunamis usually hit in Japan?

Question:

I want to go to school in Japan for my grade 11. But, I'm trying to do all the research I can so I convince my parents to let me go. Does it usually hit in Kyoto? Or Hokkaido? By Tokyo, or in the Southern regions? Northern Regions? How high do they usually go? And my mom has this crazy idea, Since Japan is so small, she is scared that a tsunami might take out the entire island. (of course I told her it was impossible) But, if there was a percentage (example "There is a ___% chance that Japan will be taken out by a tsunami...") then maybe I can convince her to let me go. If anyone can answer my questions, I would be so thankful. (:

Answer:

Japan isn't one big island, but made up of four main islands. Kyoto seems to be far enough inland not to be hit by a tsunami.
The last tsunami went in about 5 miles inland. Chances of all of Japan being hit are zero. As the other poster told you, Japan is about the same size as California. There's never been an earthquake to take out such a large area. The recent quake was 9.0, the scale stops at 10.00.
Going to school in Japan is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Tokyo, Kyoto and Hokkaido should all be safe.

Can anyone translate this japanese phrase?

Question:

"Anthony no daisuki wa.. Hmm... suteki desu!"

Cheers

Answer:

It's not correct as Japanese.

>suteki desu!"

This means "It's nice."

Can you please show me some japanese basic expressions (for daily life)?

Question:

For example:

お帰り - When someone enters to your house
行ってきます - Used when you leave your house
検討します - Used when someone gives you something you dont want

And so on...

I know these kind of things are basic but they are not basic when you are learning japanese by yourself (like my case).

よろしくお願い ^__^

Answer:

There are too many important basic every day expressions that you need to know and not enough space on a post to answer them all.

I would recommend a quality Japanese textbook like "An Introduction to Modern Japanese by Osamu Mizutani & Nobuko Mizutani". The book is designed to give the reader a solid foundation in modern Japanese, sufficient to handle everyday conversations and discussions as well as the ability to express their interests and life.

How do English teachers in Japan react to Nova teacher murder?

Question:

I think they overreact to that. in addition she broke the contract with Nova by teaching English as a side line. many English teachers broke immigration laws and commit crimes including rape.

Answer:

You're a troll, as has been pointed out, but let me say......

Murders happen in Japan. Happen everywhere. English teacher and Nova are irrelevant to the sentence except for sensationalism. A murder happened. So, too bad. Wish it hadn't. But s*** happens, even in Japan.

Never worked for Nova. Never considered working for Nova. So I didn't know about that point in their contract. However, even if she was breaking the terms of her contract, that does not justify murder. You can say she was 'asking for it'. I taught outside of the major school where I worked. The school manager knew it. It was just understood that I didn't tell students about it. Some schools don't like teachers doing that because said teachers might strike out on their own. My school didn't like me doing it because I was the instructional supervisor and even more qualified to do it on my own. Which I did. Should I be murdered because of that?

Let's leave the 'many' out of the sentence and say English teachers break laws. Now, run and do an analysis of proportional crime for various foreign professions AND the Japanese factor and see who commits the far greater overall percentage (Japanese) and of the foreign percentage attributable
to English teachers and it's very, very small percentage overall.

How could 2 people stay in tokyo for cheap?

Question:

Me and my friend always travel together, the only place we have't gone is to japan.and we really want central tokyo!but we can't speak japanese..and we plan on staying in 1 place this time..questions: how much for airlines, food, apartment(or house),billing, school(if needed),fun time^^,ect... also can teens get jobs?and as what? How do I translat there language the easiest..do we need a visa?!I want to stay forever..not just for a limit on time.
Please answer ALL questions I really need the cheapest posible way.thanks and no bad coments!

Answer:

Air fare: You need $1000-1500 if you are departing from US

Hotel: Usually, you need $120 per night if you want to stay at a hotel.
If you want to save money, you need to stay at a hostel which will cost $40-60 per night.
If you want to stay at a luxury hotel, you need $250-300 or more.

Food, transportation and others: You need $60-120 or so per day. If you want to enjoy shopping, you need more.

So you need $120 for hotel and $90 for others per day. If you want to stay in Japan for 2 weeks, the total cost will be $2940.

What are some brands in Japan(Tokyo) that are the equivalent to Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Fendi, etc etc?

Question:

Answer:

Uh, they have all of those brands in Japan, as well as Shiseido. My wife is partial to Shiseido, despite being Anglo...but she was born in and grew up in Japan...people in the US are always commenting on how great her style is...and what a tub of lard I look like.

Japan is very style conscious...and the brands you mentioned are world-class and available anywhere in the world.

Just Google the word, "Shibuya" or "Japanese Women's Magazine's" and you will see what I mean.

Need help with Japanese, please?

Question:

I was reading some rules to a contest, and I did understand most of it perfectly, but I cant see to understand this, and I don't want to use an online translator...

"チームの代表者は、現在長野県にお住まいか、もしくは長野県出身であること。
(代表者は名義だけでなく、チームの一員としてダンスをすること)"

Thank you in advance! :)

Answer:

How about this?

The representative of the team must live in Nagano prefecture now or be from Nagano prefecture.
(The representative must dance as a member of the team. A nominal representative must not be accepted.)

You are living in Nagano now, right? If so, there is no problem.

Shoe customs in Japan/China?

Question:

I know that cultures in the east are very meticulous, and thus wear different shoes in different rooms: indoor slippers and bathroom slippers, even in public bathrooms you put on special rubber ones I think. But I never have been there so don't know how widespread the changing of shoes in public restrooms (i.e a mall).

I have started studying Chinese so I plan to head east at some point to live for a time so I can practice my Chinese and maybe eventually Japanese, but I would want to spend a year out there.

Now I was wondering about all this because I have gigantic sized feet. Not just average big "western" feet compared to Asian feet, but really huge feet for any human standard, size 17 mens and I'm barely 6 feet tall so they are also very disproportionate. I can't find shoes in the west, let alone would I ever find them in Asia where people have much smaller foot sizes.

So two questions: what size would I be over there (17 mens US, 16 UK, 51/52 EU, but checking online my size is, literally, off the scale over there), And second, how would I deal with this in a practical way? Like, should I carry indoor slippers with me everywhere I go (since none that would be available there would even fit my toes... :\), and what about for restrooms and stuff. I mean, would I have to carry a backpack simply to carry two pairs of shoes?

Finally, would I get gawked at by everyone in a subway and stuff? I get stares where I live, so I'm used to the ''freak show'' status, but would people think badly of me or would the just be shocked at the sight of such extremely large feet?

my girlfriend is a 13 womens (11.5 mens) so same goes for her :

Answer:

I buy sandals let the heels hang over.
Shoes off when entering a house and duck. After 4 yrs of college went home to japan and unthinkingly walked into the house with out taking of my shoes slammed my forehead on the beams and sat down on a sofa and everyone was looking at me and I said what?

In bath rooms they have different slippers than house slippers.

Japanese rhymes/songs for kids?

Question:

Simple songs and short rhymes for kids. Every country has them right? Now I was wondering what for kid songs and rhymes they have in Japan. And if they have any gestures they use with that.

In the Netherlands we have 'handje klap' what means 'hand slap'. We make movements while singing a simple rhyme. I have an example of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stlyR4kE7… (no it's not normal to still do this at this age, they are just kidding around) I know you guys can't really understand what they're saying but that doesn't matter, hopefully you'll understand the concept.

So my questions:
- Japanese children songs?
- Japanese children rhymes?
- Japanese games like 'handje klap'?

I would appreciate it if you can add the names and even the translation of the songs/rhymes.

Thanks!

Answer:

This is exactly like rhymes we see on your video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5iRONVcE1…

But this song comes from Yankee Doodle in America. Japanese put original lyrics.

Old Japanese games that kids play?

Question:

You know them.. those games that kids play. Now I was wondering if you could tell me a couple of examples of games whom are played in Japan. I mean games like tag and hide and seek. Please tell me how the game goes and what it's called!

Thanks!!

Answer:

Some popular playground school games in Japan are

Oni-gokko - tag

Kakurenbo - hide and seek

Keisatsu-gokko - cops and robbers

Janken - rock, paper, scissors

Is this gesture also used in Japan?

Question:

There is something I wonder about.
Here in the Netherlands we have this gesture we call the box.
It's like a high five only now you make your hand into a fist and you touch with your knuckles the fist of the other person. (see the picture) http://oeoeganda2007.web-log.nl/onderwij…
Anyway now I was wondering if the kids in Japan do it too.

Thanks!

Answer:

It is not so common.
Only some people, like baseball players do that, like below.
http://blog.goyah.net/p-kohama/187171-ms…

So some kids might begin to do that. But I've never seen that kids do that.

Can anyone tell me anything you know about kyoto, Japan?

Question:

Please, I want to move there when i graduate so can anyone tll me anythinng about it. Culture, food, or really anyting. If you've been there can yu tell me your experience. Please and thank you :)

Answer:

I actually went like 3 weeks ago so I'll tell you! and I'm originally from Japan too. If you go to Kyoto, visit Kiyomizudera, Arashiyama, Kinkakuji, and Ginkakuji. They are so so beautiful especially if you go during the fall. I'm sure you'll get images when you type those in on google. There are a lot of tourists in Kyoto. It's pretty cool because Kyoto resembles a lot of old Japanese culture which is great, but if you get on a train for just around 30 minutes, you hit Osaka which is very modern. It's a truly beautiful city. The food is amazing too. They have a lot of old fashioned food and little sweets in Kyoto. Anyone should visit Kyoto once in their life. :) The Japanese are friendly people. If you need help with directions when you get there, they will help you. Good Luck!!!

How long would it take at sea from okinawa japan to sidney autralia?

Question:

if i was to take a cruse on ship from okinawa japan all the way to sidny australia how long would it take.

Answer:

It's about 4000 miles. Ever heard of a 4000 mile cruise?

And now, back to reality. If you are really interested in determining an hypothetical answer to your question, find out both the top speed of a European barn swallow in full dive and the average speed of the typical cruise ship. Use one of those rates in the equation T=D/R and there you go. Hint: The European barn swallow dive rate is just for fun.)

did something happen in japan?

i am muslim but i didn't really think japan would be hostile towards muslim people plus it doesn't make sense that they would be.

thanks, and i did have a good time my culture has some similarities with the japanese.

Answer:

I think that there is a possible exemption from VAT tax for purchases...but I have never had a problem. My wife, on the other hand, an Anglo, but a Japanese Citizen, has been asked for hers. The looks on the peoples faces when she drops her Red Passport on them is priceless. We have, BTW, been questioned heavily in Customs though. LOL

This is hardly routine though. In fact, it is quite unusual...unless you are shopping duty free. I agree with Homer. The most notable exception would be at the Major Int'l Airports.

Which part of Japan should I go for work experience?

Question:

I was thinking of doing the school exchange program at our school to go to Japan for 3 months at the end of next year. But where would be the best place that have good school, nice neighbourhood and most importantly good food :) thanks in advance to whoever answer this.

Answer:

I do NOT like Tokyo. To me, it's a concrete jungle. Don't get me wrong, it's Japan and there are a LOT of things to see there, but to me, Osaka just has a more cultural feel to it. And it's still a big city. And Osaka is near Kyoto for the temples and shrines and Nara's Deer Park, which has the Big Buddha housed in the world's largest wooden structure.

It's preference. But I lived in Tokyo for about 3-4 years and never really liked it as well as Osaka. I was always glad to 'go home' to Osaka on weekends.

And one last thing. When I was in Tokyo there was at least one small earthquake a week. Not saying it doesn't happen in Kansai, look what happened to Kobe. But I have rarely felt an earthquake here. Felt a little tremor when the earthquake hit Sendai. And weirdly enough, I felt a little 'jolt' last night. But earthquakes just seem less common here.

Can Keo be a Japanese name or it's just a Hawaiian name?

Where can I buy Clear Care in Japan?

Question:

I'm currently studying abroad in Japan, and sadly I forgot to buy the contact solutions for my contacts before coming (rather, I ran out of time but same effect). Is there any place near Tokyo (specifically Mitaka-shi) that I can buy Clear Care, the solution that I usually use? Alternatively, is there any other brands that are more common here and just as effective? Thanks for the info in advance!

Type of Geta sandals?

Question:

I'm half Japanese, and my aunt bought me a pretty Yukata & obi~ but I didn't get shoes, so I have to buy them myself!

But, what kind? Obviously they need to match, but... I really like the kind with the 2 teeth, but all those I seem to find on Ebay say they're men's shoes... I see a bunch on ones for 'women' with rounded and flat bottoms, but those don't look really attractive to me...

Am I supposed to wear ones with flat or rounded bottoms~? ><

(Note: No, I can't ask my family~ They told me to just 'pick something no one will be looking at your feet!', so... xD Like I said, I prefer 2 teeth geta sandals... but, I don't now...)

Answer:

Your select is not so bad.
But I prefer more feminine one. I think a black strap looks to be for men.
How about this one? However I don't like the word "Geisha".

Question for Anime Fans?

Question:

Hi, I have to translate some old (early 90's) anime shows into English. I was looking for a website or any kind of resource that may have the scripts, in Japanese, preferably, German or English OK as well.

I am trying to translate it without a script and it is taking ridiculously long because I first have to figure out what they're saying and it's a sci-fi theme, and I am hopelessly lost. So if you know of any archives online of screenplays/scripts of anime, please let me know. I can find scripts for American movies and TV shows online fairly easily, but I have not been able to find any Japanese sites. Maybe it is copyright infringement.
For those of you who care about such things I'll be sure and give you best answer if you find a link or have any knowledge you can share about such things.
