Plase explain to me all the usage of ni, de and to?

Question:

with some examples thanks

Answer:

"Ni" marks places. It shows where you're coming or going. You would put it after the place you're marking.
Watashi wa eki ni ikimasu. = I go to the station (eki means station).
Anata wa gakkou ni ikimasu. = You go to school (gakkou means school).

"De" can be translated as "by means of." For example, if you're traveling, and you would like to say "by car," you would say "kuruma de." It could also be a type of place marker, saying where something takes place. It comes after the place. "Watashi wa resutoran de ban-gohan o tabemasu."
This sentence means "I eat dinner at a restaurant." "Resutoran" means restaurant. At the restaurant, the thing that is going on is the eating of dinner. This is different from "ni" because "ni" is not used when marking what's going on in a certain place.
"Resutoran ni ikimasu" is where ni would be used.

"To" links a list of things together. For example, you could say "banana to budou to ringo" to mean "Bananas and grapes and apples."

Diff. between 己 and 自身?

Question:

like... one's おのれ and the other's 自身 but they mean the same thing? I'm guessing they're used differently though... so any guidance would be great. Thanks.

Answer:

Daisuke is correct. There is a difference between おのれ and 自身

おのれ is a pronoun (myself, yourself, himself or herself). it can be use as third person pronoun.
For example:
先生は己に対して厳しい。(The teacher is strict with himself)
己に勝つ(control/master oneself('s desires))
己を省みる(reflect upon oneself('s actions))
己の失敗で気がとがめる(feel guilty about one's mistake)

おのれ has a second meaning for You. This is second usage can only be used if the person you are addressing has an inferior status compared to you. (Japanese is a hierarchal language)
For example: 己の名を言え(Give your name!)

自身 means personally. For example,
文部大臣自身が来られた。(the Minister for Education came personally)
私自身はこの絵のほうが好きです。(Personally, I prefer this picture.)
君自身の意見はどうなんだ?(What is your personal opinion?)
僕自身は傷つけた。(I personally hurt/injured myself)

Would I be welcomed in Japan?

Question:

Ive always wanted to live in Japan, but will I be treated badly?

I'm American and here we treat immigrants from other countries like crap.

Would the Japanese treat me the same way?

I really love the Japanese culture and wish to live there.

Answer:

No dogs are allowed, especially, white dogs.

Seriously, most Japanese, including me, are very kind and helpful to visitors from overseas regardless of your nationality as long as you stay in Japan for a short period of time.
But, DON'T live in Japan as a resident unless you are exchange student. Our attitude towards you would change drastically overnight.
Unless you are a native-level speaker of our language (which is extremely rare), you cannot get a job in Japan. If you are proud of yourself, don't be a "teacher" of English, which is the least respected job in Japan. 99% of the Japanese are looking down on them.

If you are American, you can stay here for 3 months as a tourist, and you can repeat it every year if you want. But DON'T try to live in Japan as a resident. Our national policy is very strict against foreign residents in Japan for the purpose of preserving our homogeneity of the Japanese for a variety of reasons (I am not going into this argument here).

You could be treated well in Japan as a tourist, but otherwise, you my be treated like a dog if not a rat.

Question about kimono?

Question:

I know that kimono are worn with the left side on top, unless it is for a burial. So why is it that in this picture, the right side of her kimono is on top?

http://www.kyoto-maiko.jp/index.html

Answer:

Well, the girl in the picture is an authentic maiko. Trust me, if there is ANYONE in the world who knows how to wear kimono properly, it's the maiko, the geiko, and the people who dress them each day. The maiko in question is wearing her kimono correctly, but whoever designed that website flipped the picture. I couldn't tell you why -- obviously they wanted a picture of someone in that kind of pose on that side of the web page, but why they couldn't take the time to find an actual picture oriented like that rather than flipping another picture I have no idea.

Incidentally, you can tell it's the photo that's flipped rather than the maiko wearing her kimono wrong because of the position of her kanzashi. That big flower that she's wearing is ALWAYS worn on the maiko's left (viewer's right if the viewer is facing the maiko) among the Kyoto maiko, but in this picture the kanzashi is on her right. That's not where it's supposed to go and every maiko in Kyoto would know that. You can see this on the other two maiko on the left of the picture, who are oriented properly (and that one on the far right in blue is the SAME ONE as displayed on the left with her picture flipped so it looks like her kimono is wrong!).

Is 東品川 a city in Japan? or is 川区?

Question:

i am trying to figure out which one would be the city and which one would be almost like a street address. HELP!

Answer:

tokyo is divided into 23 wards and a few cities. 23 wards constitute the central part of tokyo.

品川区 is one of the 23 wards. 東品川 is a name for an area which constitutes, together with other areas, 品川区.

東品川 is further divided into 5 areas from 一丁目 to 五丁目. Each of them is a town. Thus, 東品川一丁目 is a name for a town.

What are some differences with education?

Question:

I really want to know how Japan differs from America. I looked it up on google but i really just want to hear it start from someone that either knows this really well, or who is actually from Japan. Thank you!

Answer:

Well, school lunch in my town almost always has soup. Curry day is an exception, but I think that's about it. The school lunches are served in the classroom, and most schools won't have a school cafeteria (or vending machines or that other stuff, at least in the elementaries).

School is very centrally controlled, and many things are standard across the whole country. Elementary is first through sixth, junior high is seventh through ninth (which they call first, second and third), and high school is tenth through 12th (again, they call it first, second and third grade).

Foreign language is required from seventh grade, and it's usually English. The arts (music and drawing) are quite strong in the schools. There's more of an emphasis on skills rather than creativity in the arts, but creativity is definitely not discouraged. I would say math is more progressive than American math, but that might be a generational difference.

Classes can be much bigger than the US. In elementary schools, it's not totally unusual to see 40 students in one classroom . . . and if kids move in during the semester, they may jump to 41 or 42 students in a class. Students tend to stay in one room, and only move for P.E. or music or special labs. The teachers move.

The opening is too small, and I'm not sure if I want to crack the bottle open for the marble. Does anyone know if theres a way?

What can I do to help Japan?

Question:

I don't have any money to donate, unfortunately. I did, however, hear about how many of Japan's tourist attractions are closing early to conserve energy. If I were to conserve energy in America, would it be able to help other countries? If not, what can I do?

Answer:

Maybe, in a way you could help not only Japan, but the whole planet if you try to consume less electricity. Global warming is of major concern and I have read in a scientific article about how it makes the icebergs melt in the Polar areas. Appearently ice over there is so heavy that it presses the crust with such a force, that plates don't move that fast. The more ice will melt, the more plates will move, causing stronger earthquakes (and ultimately tsunamis) in the future. So, if we consume less of anything that produces heat into the atmosphere, I guess, we're on the right track.

Does this sound the right amound of money to go to japan?

Question:

I did some calculations and i work out that it would cost approximately £4000 or $6500 (if you we're flying from the UK) staying ina standard hotel for 2 weeks does that sound about right?

Answer:

Air fare: You need $1000-1500 if you are departing from US

Hotel: Usually, you need $100 per night if you want to stay at a hotel.
If you want to save money, you need to stay at a hostel which will cost $30-50 per night.
If you want to stay at a luxury hotel, you need $200-300 or more.

Food, transportation and others: You need $50-100 or so per day. If you want to enjoy shopping, you need more.

So you need $100 for hotel and $75 for others per day. If you want to stay in Japan for 2 weeks, the total cost will be $2450.

I am not able to learn Japanese. I don't know how to go about learning the grammar?

Question:

I got interested in learning Japanese 3.5 years ago. I used to just copy kanji characters for fun. Later I started learning hiragana, katakana and some vocabulary. Then I joined an online correspondence course for Japanese but I finished half of it and didn't do it more because it was very slow and there were some other disadvantages (the teacher never answered any of my questions). I have loads of books for learning Japanese, especially for particles and "grammar for dummies". I love "Japanese grammar for dummies" book but I don't have patience with drilling and exercises. I like reading the theory but I feel like sleeping when I see grammar exercises. Then I thought that maybe I could pick up Japanese grammar by just reading bilingual Japanese text (Japanese with English on the side) and "the grammar will come". Like this I learned to recognize quite a few kanji and understand more on how kanji work and how some grammar structures work. Maybe this is called a "passive learning". I have no idea how to study the "aggressive" way and reinforce the grammar rules in my head. As most of my learning has been "passive", (reading, listening) I have big troubles with writing and speaking. Although I can understand some words written in kanji but I could never write that word out of my memory. The same, I think, I have no idea how to talk in Japanese because I have no idea what comes after what and there are so many transitive-intransitive verbs. I get a feeling I am just fooling myself while believing I can learn Japanese myself. Do you have any idea what could help with "idiomatic usage of Japanese" and all their idioms and idiomatic phrases + complexity of verbs and particles?

Answer:

Passive learning is really good for input, but if you really want to speak/write Japanese, you have to do it. Get a penpal. See if that person will do Skype. And I also heard that if you Skype, you can leave some setting open, and people will talk to you.

Right now, it sounds like you are using Japanese as a kind of super-jigsaw puzzle -- figuring out how the "rules" work and how it fits together. And there's nothing wrong with that! It's a great mental exercise and a way to pass the time. But, it isn't really learning the language. (-: I see a lot of Japanese who do the exact same thing with English.

If you can't find a native speaker to help you (although, all things are possible on the internet), I suggest you recruit a study buddy to work with you.

Finally, and I don't know if you'll have the patience for this, but Ben Franklin said he learned French by reading an article or short essay in French, translating it into English, then hiding the original, and trying to re-translate the English back into French. Kind of tedious, but certainly useful and something you can do all by yourself.
