Question about kimono?

Question:

I know that kimono are worn with the left side on top, unless it is for a burial. So why is it that in this picture, the right side of her kimono is on top?

Answer:

Well, the girl in the picture is an authentic maiko. Trust me, if there is ANYONE in the world who knows how to wear kimono properly, it's the maiko, the geiko, and the people who dress them each day. The maiko in question is wearing her kimono correctly, but whoever designed that website flipped the picture. I couldn't tell you why -- obviously they wanted a picture of someone in that kind of pose on that side of the web page, but why they couldn't take the time to find an actual picture oriented like that rather than flipping another picture I have no idea.

Incidentally, you can tell it's the photo that's flipped rather than the maiko wearing her kimono wrong because of the position of her kanzashi. That big flower that she's wearing is ALWAYS worn on the maiko's left (viewer's right if the viewer is facing the maiko) among the Kyoto maiko, but in this picture the kanzashi is on her right. That's not where it's supposed to go and every maiko in Kyoto would know that. You can see this on the other two maiko on the left of the picture, who are oriented properly (and that one on the far right in blue is the SAME ONE as displayed on the left with her picture flipped so it looks like her kimono is wrong!).
