Can someone translate this map of the tsunami in Japan's wave heights?

Question:

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5057/5519479026_89b72f76be.jpg

Its for a school project thats due tomorrow! Its the best graph i could find and i cant understand it!! D:

thanks.

Answer:

figure written on the map is Tsunami height.
10 is 10 meter.
3 is 3 meter.
0.5 is 0.5 meter.

Kisyoutyou, Japanese meteorological agency, report 3 type tsunami information.

Ootunami Keihou(大津波警報)Big Tsunami Warning
Tsunami Keihou(津波警報)Tsunami Warning
Tsunami Tyuuihou(津波注意報) Tsunami Caution

Ootunami Keihou is reported when the tidal height will be over 3 meters.
Tsunami Keihou is reported when will be between 1~3 meters.
Tsunami Tyuuihou is reported when will be below 0.5 meters generally.

this figure in the map is forecast height, no real height.
their tsunami forecast will be reported very rapidly, general, 2~3 minutes after earthquake.

purple line is Ootunami Keihou.
red line is Tsunami Keihou.
yellow line is Tsyunami Tyuuihou.

Kisyoutyou only can report Tsunami information exclusively,
because if other third parties report them, the Tsunami information is confused.

Is the name Akihito commonly associated with the Japanese emperor?

Question:

I know that he was technically "re-named" Heisei when he became the emperor... But would it be weird if a rhetorical person was named Akihito in Japan? Is it like naming a child Obama or something? Would it be weird because it's, like, a common name for old people? I'm writing a story about a old-ish person in Japan, and I like the name. Any input would help!

Thanks!
-Mack.

Answer:

Akihito is a perfectly plausible (and not unusual) male name in Japan. It would, however, be very unusual for someone to use the exact same characters used in the former prince's name. There are plenty of other characters one could use, though: 明人, 昭仁, 秋人, 章仁, etc, etc.

(I've heard a story from before WW2 of a father who named his son Hirohito and used the same characters as the Emperor's name without really thinking about it. Once he realized what he had done, he killed himself and his son to apologize for his unspeakable crime. I have no idea if it's actually true, and obviously it's not a crime or anything these days, but it's still hard to imagine anyone actually using the exact same name/characters.)

Somebody who red Sadako's book.......?

Question:

For those who maybe don't remember, Sadako is a girl from Japan and this story was set 8 years after the atomic bomb and Sadako had the Leukemia. She died in 1955 and she liked to make cranes. Her classmates, after she died, they made 1000 cranes to remember her.

Could you answer to these simple questions? :

How did Sadako keep herself occupied in the ospital?

Why do you think the author introduced Kenji into the story?

Of all the people who died as a result of the atom bomb, why do you think Sadako's death was given special significance?

Why do you think Mrs. Sasaki made Sadako a new kimono even though she was near the death?

Thanks!!! :)))))

Answer:

Didn't do your homework, huh? I didn't read the book, but I can answer a couple of the questions.

How did Sadako keep herself occupied in the hospital?
Making paper cranes.

Why do you think the author introduced Kenji into the story?
I don't know this.

Of all the people who died as a result of the atom bomb, why do you think Sadako's death was given special significance?
Because she is a symbol of resilience, and because her story as a child is sympathetic to most people. Hers was probably one the few cases well documented, too.

Why do you think Mrs. Sasaki made Sadako a new kimono even though she was near the death?
To give her hope.

Ways to say "have" in japanese?

Question:

motteiru? motteru? motte imasu? I don't quite get it.

How would I say these then?:
"I have MSN"
"I have homework"
"I have a pet dog"
"I have the time"

There would be a difference in all of them because of the 'objects' right??

Answer:

motteiru, motteru and motteimasu both means the same thing.

motteru is more casual speech, motteiru is the normal form while motteimasu is the polite (teinei) form.

I have MSN. MSNを使っています。MSN wo tsukatteimasu.
I have homework. 宿題があります。Shukudai ga arimasu.
I have a pet dog. 飼い犬がいます。Kaiinu ga imasu.
I have the time. 時間があります。Jikan ga arimasu.

In your 4 sentences, it's much more normal to use aru or iru, then motteiru.

The times I'll use motsu would be,

あの人に興味を持っていますか? Do you have an interest in that person?
母はちっちゃいな店を持っています。My Mom has a small shop.

Does anyone know of a way to memorialize someone in Japan?

Question:

My good friend who was born in Japan just recently died. I was wondering if anyone knew of memorials or commemorations or things of the like that I could donate to or erect, etc. in her honor. For instance, at many zoos in America, one can donate and they get the name of the donor on a plaque or sometimes you can donate money to a certain organization and they will plant a tree in your honor. I was wondering if anyone knew anything like that specifically in the country of Japan that I could purchase or donate to and perhaps visit or what-have-you later in life.

Answer:

There are few things like that among individuals. That's what corporations do anyway.

Nuclear plant in japan?

Question:

i have to do a current event on it for school. i have no clue what the nuclear plant is all about, can someone tell me in detail or send me a link?

Answer:

The forty year old plants in Fukushima were hit with an earthquake five times the strength they were designed for and yet they still shut down safely. The generators came on like they were supposed to when grid power was cut. Then the tsunami hit and the generators were wiped out. However, the battery backup still worked for the designed eight hours. The problem happened when no new generators could be put in. Even so the problems have been minimal--media scare mongering for ratings not withstanding.

Note that no workers were burned by radiation although two were unfortunately killed by the tsunami.

"On 31 March, NISA reported that among the workers at the Fukushima Daiichi plant, 21 workers have received doses exceeding 100 mSv. No worker has received a dose above 250 mSv, which is the dose limit for emergency workers.", IAEA (second and third links).

And here is where you find current, factual status information:

Traveling to Japan with a child, not knowing birth father?

Question:

My husband and I are planning on going to Japan in a couple years. My husband is not the biological father to our son. I do not know who the birth father is. And I know most times you need the consent of the other parent to legally take a child under the age of 16 out of the USA. But as I said I do not know who the birth father is and NO one is on the birth certificate besides me. My husband and I were not married at the time of birth but he was there during the whole pregnancy and we married when our son was 10mos. Our son has my husbands last name from birth.
Do you think I would have to go through all the trouble and disrupt my happy life to find out who the birth father is just to travel 1 month to Japan?

Answer:

If no father is named on the birth certificate, you can get the passport alone...no other signature needed. However, it certainly would be great if your husband could adopt your child. Since you were married to your current husband at the time of the birth, legally he would be considered the father...should have had his name put on birth certificate. Be a very good idea to visit a lawyer who specializes in family issues and get things straight now. Would certainly make the child happier in the future. and as the other person said...no reason to discuss this with anyone...except the lawyer.

How to say, "I did not have time this semester to take Japanese" in Japanese?

I am not sure how to correctly say, "I did not have time this semester to take Japanese." I am writing to a Japanese penpal and would really like to get this sentence right!

Here is my attempt, but I'm sure this is not grammatically correct!
これ学期に日本語は時間がありませんでした。

この学期に忙しい。
だから日本語を習ってわない

I changed some things to make it sound more fitting to the Japanese language.

This semester, I am busy.
Therefore, I didn't learn Japanese.

When would it be safe to go to Japan?

Question:

Well, at least... as "safe" as it can ever be, lol. :P

No, what I mean is, when would it be safe to go there? My Dad was supposed to take me there sometime in the next 3 years, and I was planning to learn some Japanese again (I was learning, but, unfortunately, the class was cutting too much into my time that I needed for other things!), but, now that the earthquake has hit, plus the tsunami, it looks like that's not happening yet - at least, not anytime soon! My Mom has already called off the trip, because of the current state of things (I wanted to go to Tokyo, if that helps), but... if you were just going there as a tourist, when would be a good time to go? In a few years, maybe?

Answer:

It's already safe now except for areas around the nuke in Fukushima.

Who is doing care packages for Japan?

Question:

Answer:

I haven't found too many organizations accepting anything but monetary donations.
I'm putting 2 links for organization accepting non-monetary donations; 1 in Seattle the other in Cincinnati. Of course, if don't live near there, then I would assume giving $ will go further than spending goods to those organizations. I spent around $250 sending 4 flat rate boxes to my family in Japan so I don't recommend doing care packages on your own!

How long until Japan returns to "normal"?

Question:

I'm going to be studying abroad in Okayama later this year. I'll arrive in early October. I know Japan is still having problems right now from the earthquake and that power in Tokyo will be in short supply going into the summer. Any chance that things in Japan will be "normal" (obviously a place like Sendai isn't going to be normal for a long time) by the time I go there?

Answer:

It depends on what you mean by normal.

There is already little problem in Okayama now. If you want to stay in Okayama, you don't have mind other places.

BTW, some people here have a wrong idea that Sendai is the worst hit area. But it's not.

The areas where it will take longer than any others to restore are either of the following 2.

1, neighborhood around Fukushima Nuke, like Futaba-cho or Tomioka-cho. Futaba-cho has Fukushima Daiichi Nuke. Tomioka-cho has Fukushima Daini Nuke.

Those places will be uninhabitable for years or even more. No one still knows how long radiation will remain there.

2, coastal towns of northern Japan like Rikuzentakata, Kesennuma and many others (I won't name all of them now)

This is Rikuzentakata.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rikuzentaka…

They were completely swept away by tsunami. So it takes years to restore. Sendai is a large city. So its coastal area was destroyed much. But its inland area does not have much problems.

If I talk about railway as a barometer of going back to "normal", all trains going to and from JR Sendai station will be restored by the end of April.

But it will take years to restore railways on coastal lines in northern Japan.

And railways around Fukushima Nuke? Ask radiation when they will leave there.

Is it true Japanese MEN expect the women to wait on them hand-and-foot?

Question:

Im just curious...because I heard that they treat women like garbage...they dont help out with the housework or groceries and then go out and cheat :/

Is this still true (culturally speaking)?

I ask because the Japanese guys Ive known under 35 years old always seem very opposite...they have always been very eager to help me, and will make everything revolve around me (like whatever I want).

So yea, thats why I am curious ^.^ Thanks!

Answer:

If you can say "the Japanese guys I've known under 35,,,", then just take it as reality. You don't have to mind "I heard that,,," story.

I think there are some guys among old generation who treat women like garbage. But there are also some Japanese women who treat men like garbage. It's the same.

Do Japanese really prefer child-like appearances in women? Does this apply to white women too?

Question:

I am just a bit worried ^.^ I am white...I am not worried about my size being a problem because I am only 4'10" and am not overweight.

My problem is that although I am considered physically attractive in the United States, I am not sure if I would be considered so in Japan. I feel like Japanese prefer women who look very child-like.

I guess I look more like the stereotypical sorority girl (but light brown hair lol)...so, not really child-like and "kawaii." :/

I hope nobody gets offended by this question, but I feel like Japanese men want a "lolita" -- child face, flat chested, innocent looking.

Is this true? Thanks and pls dont lash out at me if something I said came off as offensive. ^.^;;;

Answer:

Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder.

My personal opinion:
I like slim, slightly tall girls (5'4-5'7), with long flawless legs. I don't like a girl who looks and acts childish or like a 10 year old. Looking fresh and young, which I like, is very different from looking like a child. And I certainly do not like girl with flat chest. I'm a man, I have "needs" too!
