Why isnt french cuisine popular ?

Question:

By popular I mean that it isnt as mainstream as italian, mexican, japanese etc.

I went to a french restaurant that was very high end called Bardot, we had some snail and some pasta whose name I cant pronounce. It was very expensive, and the only french restaurant in the city that I know of.

Answer:

I love French food, but I can't imagine it going mainstream mostly because it tends to be more complex, which usually means that it costs more to make, it also tends to use rare ingredients that can't be found every where which tends to also make it more expensive, as a result making it more of a once in a while occasion instead of a casual outing like mexican, italian etc. which makes it less mainstream

DISCUSSION: Racism in Japan, Any opinions?

Question:

I'm a white guy and I've been living in Japan for the past 4 years and speak fluent Japanese. I was speaking to my buddy khatz who'se been living in Japan for quite a while too. Any time we have had a misunderstanding or encountered something that seems along the lines of "racism", we usually can deal with it fairly easily. We have both experienced racism towards not being able to "get an apartment" and being "stopped by racial profiling " cops, etc.. Has anyone else experienced this?

But I shot this video around 2 years ago. I'm not the guy to quickly assume bad stuff about Japan, cause I've been living here for the past 4 years of my life so I know what's going on.

Part 1:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rt6D5HgI2…

Part 2:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tb0vHhB_r…

Oh and for anyone that's quick to assume I'm racist, than eat a big one.

Seriously guys, This country is great, any time you think there is "RACISM" going on, take a step back, learn Japanese fluently, live here for a couple years like I have and be intregrated into the culture before assuming that Japan is racist or I'm racist for opening up this discussion.

If you're interested in all this and wanna know more about Japan from a foreigners perspective, than check out my channel.

YouTube: TkyoSam

Answer:

Sorry Sam racism does exist here in Japan and your friend Khatz seems like one of those Japan can do no wrong kind of people and makes excuses for Japan. It's nonsense that "unless you are looking for it" it does not exist.

In my 2 years here I had a difficult time getting an apartment, seen a few Japanese only signs, had "GAIJIN" shouted at me often in my old neighborhood (mostly by older men), had high schoolers throw candy at me and chant ami gaijin, the "gaijin bubble" on the train, been discriminated against at work by Japanese co-workers, been stopped my the cops often en route to work as I pass the Koban and asked for my ARC/gaijin card. I have a thick skin so it's not a HUGE concern to me. People who have thin skin probably should not choose Japan to live.

I find it sad that the mindset is the typical American love it or leave it. Why not change it? What bugs me is the "Japan is perfect" mindset and ignoring or denying any problems it has. EVERY country has problems and there is no utopia.

Also I disagree that other countries are worse when it comes to racism (I've been to over 30 countries and lived in 5 for more than a year). Luckily I am not Korean or Chinese as they get treated far far worse here. I had a Chinese girlfriend here and she was treated terribly enough to the point she returned back to China.

How do you say bless you in Japanese?

Question:

You know like after you sneeze people say bless you, how do you say that in japanese?

Answer:

I like Japan because nobody says anything after you sneeze. You just sneezed, that's all.

The only people that say something are people who want to use their English with the foreigner.

Of course if you keep sneezing, someone will ask if you're OK or make some other remark.

What happends when i start my sticky rice too soon?

Question:

it said to let sit 40 mins before turning on cooker but i accidentally strted it right away...is there any way to make it sticky?

Answer:

You should leave the rice to sit for about 30 minutes if you have time, but if you don't have enough time, I wouldn't worry about it too much. The key is in the preparation and mixing of the rice. Follow the Recipe below for perfect Japanese sticky rice.

What kind of Japanese food would be good after you've had a stomach flu?

Question:

I usually eat Japanese food during the weeks and of course I mean that I cook it myself. But this week I have had a stomach bug so my stomach is very weak. That is why I wonder what kind of Japanese food is very easy on the stomach and yet easy to cook. Plus I don't want to go hungry since I will be doing regular exercise as usual. Any tips?

Normally in Japan, when we are sick or have a weak stomach, we eat Okayu, which is like a thick porridge or soup of rice. It is very easy to digest and eat when you don't feel well.

Japanese Dewa nai and Dewa naku?

Question:

Whats the difference? Are they used the same?

Answer:

They're practically the same.

For grammatical purposes in Japanese,

the"i" sound, is conjugated to a "ku" sound.

However, since dewa nai and dewa naku means "it is not" it probably doesn't work here. You often see dewa naku in rarely but some formal conversation, or in song lyrics, or in casual conversations. Sometimes when you translate things or make sense of it, it's best not to think about it too much.

Content japanese middle school subjects?

Question:

I know what kind of subjects the students have in the Japanese middle school.
Namely: English, Science, Social Studies, Health and PE, Japanese, Math, Biology, Music, Art en homemaking.

But now I kind of need to know what the content is from those subjects. Which topics do you treat? What for assignments do you get?

For example: Health and PE. In the Netherlands we only have PE what means we do work outs and practice sports like soccer, softball, basketball, hockey and much more. But isn't Health and PE in Japan a little bit different? Don't the students get lessons about hygiene too or something like that? Please explain!

Homemaking... isn't that only for girls? What do they do? Cook?

And about the other subjects, please explain what kind of assignments you get? What are the topics you discuss? Do they have homework?

I just can't find any information about this stuff on the internet... Please help!

It would be wonderful if it's about the 9th grade especially!

Thanks!

I want a japanese rice cooker , which one to get?

Question:

I want one of those japanese rice cookers, which brands or models are the best?

Answer:

Zojirushi make some of the best rice cookers around. For reviews of the latest models please see here: http://www.yumasia.co.uk/reviews.html

With some Zojirushi cookers you can change the texture of the rice, cook mixed rice/brown/white/sushi, congee, cheesecake, slow cooking mode etc so it depends on the features important to you. The listing here may help you decide http://www.yumasia.co.uk/products.html and a comparison is given here http://www.yumasia.co.uk/comparison.html

Then all you have to do is choose the correct capacity size of cooker. Cooking with fuzzy logic is simple...it's just a matter of pressing a button and waiting a short time (you can set timers on Zojirushi models so they will cook the rice without you even being around) and you will have perfectly cooked rice. No spit/splutter on your worktop because the fuzzy logic units are sealed. Just make sure you select the correct voltage rice cooker and they have a warranty for your country of purchase. We sell genuine Zojirushi rice cookers for the UK, Europe and Australia markets.

Hope this helps

Is Japanese culture more different to Western culture than Chinese culture?

Question:

by Western I'm talking about the general American culture.

Answer:

I'm Japanese.
Frankly I want to write as I feel about differences.

I've traveled China alone a decade ago, went to Qufu which is the holy place of Confucianism and legendary Mt.Tai which is a special place among Chinese like Mt.Fuji for Japanese.
I've talked many Chinese people lived in there with not fluent Chinese and some English.
I didn't feel much differences in culture.
Btw Japan and China there is unhappy history but once we talk each other I feel sympathy and same origin.
I felt Chinese people I met in my travel like my country uncle and felt old beautiful Japan which we Japanese lost now.

For Japanese, The most influential events over 200 year most of us consider are WWII and the end of edo era breaking closing country. (and unhappy now adding tragedy earthquake and Fukushima...)
Japanese democracy and capitalism starts at imitation imported by Western.
It's exactly well done good working as surface now.

Obama said the important thing is not the nation do for you but you do for the nation.
Japanese complains to politics only.
I think Japanese conscious about democracy is more or less lower than Western.

American the most influential event over 200 year I guess is the Great Depression and war of independence?
I've read Adam Smith and J.M.Keynes.
I know Adam Smith say free trade against mercantilism.
And I know how America suffer and conquer the Grate Depression and what Keynes consider.
They were born in Western culture and Western acquire as own culture.
There is no superior economic blog in Japan like Calculated Risk and so on.
Japanese economist has never got Nobel prize.
I think Japanese democracy and capitalism is immature yet and not reach to understand its essential as whole culture.

I feel somewhat a little difference speaking to Western, basically as same human being so I feel no big difference. But I feel Western a foreigner often while speaking.

Japan is strongly affected by Confucianism and Buddha through over 1000-2000 year.
My feeling is more different to Western than Chinese.
