because the drugstore in hiroo is small and not a lot of brands there what is the best drugstore near hiroo/roppongi please:) ?

What does this phrase in Japanese mean?

Question:

という表現がいいと思います.

My pen pal told me this means, "I think this is the right phrase." Can someone break it down word per word and their meanings. I know already what 思います means, I'm just not sure what the other words are.

Thank you so much for any help! :)

Answer:

e.g. 「素晴らしい」 という表現が(私は)良いと思います。
I think "wonderful" is a (or the) suitable expression.

to break it down:
という: used when quoting something
表現: expression, wording
が: particle as used after object in this context.)
いい: suitable/appropriate/good
と 思います(to be precisely 良いと思います): I think that/it's

Purchasing/Reserving Train Ticket?

Question:

Hi, I want to know if for instance, I want to purchase a train ticket for reserved seat in advance, will the ticket be applicable only to a specific departure time and would no longer be used if I missed the indicated departure time? Because accdng. to Japan-guide, reservation only requires "departure date" but not time?

thank you!

Answer:

>will the ticket be applicable only to a specific departure time and would no longer be used if I missed the indicated departure time?

Yes. Or you should say it's applicable only to a "specific train"

Addition:
>and for trains that require reservation, one has to proceed to a manned ticket booth/office rather than a simple ticket machine right?

It's the most common way. But you can reserve it also on a machine or online.

Problem: Japanophilism. Solutions?

Question:

I didn't know that but I think that after counting the amount of time I spend reading about Japan and learning Japanese and asking questions about Japan on Yahoo Answers, proves that I am a Japanophile. A disorder, lol? They say that if you one wants to get over something they go crazy about, they should just fully immerse in it. And it will stop. After reading all about Japan I don't really feel like wanting to live there anymore because I think, I would feel a bit uneasy with all the refined Japanese manners (as they put it). So how can I satisfy my Japanophilism without leaving my country? Write books?

Answer:

You could start to learn the language. Or maybe you could cook Japanese food at home like I do :)

JR Yamanote Line Inner loop?

Question:

Hi, I just found out that Yamanote has inner and outer loop and that the latter requires one transfer. I plan to board Yamanote in Nippori going to Shinjuku and thus needs the inner loop (which is direct and requires no transfer). I know that I am supposed to go to platform 11 to board the train going to Shinjuku but how will I know if I am on the right "loop" (inner)?

Thanks!

Answer:

You won't need to know whether you are on the 'inner' or 'outer' loop since you already know your platform. Be sure to check the station names with the ones on your subway map. The main station where you board will be in large Roman letters, while the previous and next stations are written below the main station's name. You will know that you are on the right inner loop 1. when you are on Platform 11, and 2. when the name of the next station is on the left of the main sign if the train goes from right to left, and 3. you can ask any trainstation attendant.

Is it possible to travel to japan and help? instead of sending donations?

Question:

Answer:

I think it is possible, but are you doing this to help, or are you doing it for yourself? LOL, like the "person" who just got back from Italy?

You can hold charity bazaars or a yard sale and donate.

But if you want to go, try checking out the Japanese Red Cross, and also Habitat for Humanity. If you go with a group that has a good translator, you can probably do a lot of good grunt work. I think it's a wonderful thing . . . the Japanese are so impressed by the generosity the world has shown so far!

Is it appropriate to Daisuki Deso to a girlfriend? Japanese language?

Question:

or is it Daisuki? or would you use aishiteru yo.

and a follow up question would i love you too be
watashi wa anata o ai shimasu?

Answer:

Use "daisuki dayo" or just plain "daisuki". For most Japanese people, "aishiteru" is too strong/affectionate and they tend to be embarrassed by it (even among spouses).

"I love you too" would be (literally) "watashi mo anata wo aishiteru" or something like that. However, under the cultural context of Japan, "watashi mo daisuki" or an equivalent expression would be more appropriate.

Of course, you can get away with violating these kinds of social norms as a foreigner. But if you want to be mindful enough of these things, avoid the use of "aishiteru".

What is the status in japan?

Question:

im very curious what is going on. is there any new major news? is it almost over? please answer soon!

Answer:

There is new news. Last night there was a 7.1 magnitude after shock that hit Japan around where the big one hit. Is it all most over? No. If you look at the disaster in Haiti, it's still not over for many families. I would encourage you or anyone else that looks at this to help by donating money to the disaster in Japan. The organization that I would trust the most is the American Red Cross.

TEFL Jobs in Japan, Advice and/or Guidance?

Question:

I am a CELTA / PTLLS qualified EFL / ESOL teacher with teaching experience and have a pre-intermediate/intermediate knowledge of Japanese and am thinking of working in Japan for a year or so. I have seen jobs on Gaijinpot & TEFL.com and just wondered if anyone has any tips on good schools, ways to apply (please do not recommend JET to me) or anything else which may be of use. Many thanks.

Answer:

Really depends on what route you wish to go down. You can work for an eikaiwa like NOVA, GEOS, EEC or AEON, for a private English School or as an ALT in a public/private school. I have worked in all three areas and highly recommend working as an ALT in a real Japanese school as it was the most rewarding experience for me. Most major language schools now operating recruitment offices overseas, so you can actually organise and set up an interview without having to be in Japan.

Most recruiters for teaching positions in Japan will require the following:

1. Native English Speaker
2. Full Bachelor Degree (in any field)
3. Basic Japanese Ability

They also prefer actual teaching experience and qualifications like ESL, CELTA or TEFL.

If you are interesting in an ALT position try contacting ALTIA CENTRAL Japan via their recruiting website at http://recruiting.altmoot.com/

Should I cancel my phone from Japan?

Question:

I have moved back to my home country and took my Japanese phone with me, but I am paying 5000 yen a month and never using it. The reason I have not canceled is cos I wanted to give myself a work reference with a number which had a Japanese international code so it looked like someone from Japan was answering the phone and giving the reference(can't get a good reference from my ex-employer). But now I have a skype account which has a Japanese international telephone code but I can answer here in the UK with the person calling thinking they are are calling Japan. Should I just cancel my cell/mobile phone?

Can I make money vlogging in Japan?

Question:

I'm going to Japan when I graduate from college. I plan to stay there as long as possible (until get deported or forever if i can get citizenship), but I'm still learning to speak Japanese and I can barely write/read Japanese.

I know I won't be able to get a real job because of my bad Japanese so I was thinking of doing a daily vlog and posting it on youtube. I know all the popular vloggers make a 6 figure income, but is it possible for me to make enough money to live just starting out as a vlogger?

Answer:

If you are not Japanese looking there is a very high chance of police officers asking you for your ID (either your passport or your alien registration card). If you're there illegally (past 90 days straight on a tourist visa and without a different visa) you will be deported and barred from the country for a long period of time.

That aside, it will be very tough but never give up on your dreams :)

Whether to use に or で here?

Question:

Answer:

たこ焼き一個で50円です is correct. --> One takoyaki costs 50-YEN
で (here) means "per ..." (for this usage ”に” cannot apply)
e.g.
入場料は大人一人で2千円です。nyuujou-ryou wa otona hitori ”de”…
宿泊費は一泊で1万円です。shukuhaku -hi wa ippaku "de" …

けっこう有用なので”ね” doesn't really sound feminine to me, but it's used only for colloquial.
I'd say "有用だから (or -ですから) ね" or "役に立つ/役に立ちます” からね
(有用 is more like written)

----------- just to add:

たこ焼き一個に50円を払う。I pay 50-YEN FOR one takoyaki.

p.s. 最初の文章が修正します。--> 文章を訂正します

In Japan what was the heighest wave?

Question:

Answer:

I'm not sure about the wave height, it's not officially announced yet.
No official announcements because it far exceeded above the tidemeter's upper limit of 14m (46 ft.)

Observed highest seawater runup point is 37.9m (124 feet) this time.
It's about the height of 12 stories building.

In the history:
In 1896 Sanriku-Earthquake, it recorded 38.2m

In 1771 Ishigaki island tunami:
The estimated highest seawater runup point was 85.4 meters ( 280 feet).
It's about the height of 25 stories building. WOW.

You should remember that the wave height is different from the seawater run-up height.

How do I get from Haneda Airport to the Shibuya Tobu Hotel?

Question:

I will be arriving at Haneda Airport and would like to know the most efficient way to get to my hotel (Shibuya Tobu Hotel). Thank you very much

Answer:

The most efficient way to Shibuya Tobu Hotel is to take Limousine bus from Haneda Airport Terminal for Shibuya Tokyu Hotel located near Shibuya railroad station. From there about 10 minutes walk through Shibuya busy streets takes you to your destination(Shibuya Tobu Hotel) or you take a taxi. As Shibuya streets are not as straight as you might expect and you would better take a taxi. The link below is of Airport Limousine bus. Have a nice trip.

Will there still be radiation in tokyo Japan in september 2011?

Question:

Planning to visit Tokyo, Osaka , Hiroshima, Takayama, Kanazawa, Kurashiki, Kyoto in September this year. People have asked us to cancel this tour as it will be stillunsafe due to the radiation. What do you think?

Answer:

The radiation levels in Tokyo are normal. The everyday background radiation found all over the world. Fukushima's radiation is mostly out of the air now so it's fine for us here in Tokyo, for people closer to the plant not so much. Something kind of interesting is that the average radiation exposure from background radiation, military operations, cell phone use etc in the U.S. is 3000 microsieverts per year. If Tokyo stayed at it's current level the annual radiation exposure would only be 1753 microsieverts per year, nearly half of what you are exposed to in the U.S. So technically it's safer here...technically.

A question to Japanese (or those who live in an earthquake active areas)?

Question:

If you have been experiencing earthquakes since you were born, how do you mentally cope with them? Are you scared every time it happens or are you used to them? What thoughts come to your mind when you feel an earthquake? (The news is all about the new earthquake so that's why I'm asking)

Answer:

I live in an earthquake active area but nothing like the ones Japan has suffered from (including today's). You accept them but you don't get used to them. They scare me each and every time they happen because you don't know how long they are going to last or what type of damage they are going to do to you or your home.

My first thoughts are always about the safety of my family and pets - is everybody ok?
Second thing is if there was any damage to my home?
Then, I start thinking about how wide-spread was the quake and how many other people are affected by it.

I have to admit though I would rather live through an earthquake than a tornado.

What Is Japan going to do now?

Question:

7.5 Earth quake with a Nuclear Power plant already in turmoil. The country isn't that big. and just to add insult to injury another tsunami! What is to become of them if the entire country is Contaminated?

Answer:

I think you can take your tinfoil hat off. The new earthquake is only 7.1. The one that caused the problem was 9.0. That's about 100 times worse. This one won't do anything more than cause some inconvenience.

-What is to become of them if the entire country is Contaminated?

That really can't happen. The reactor design will keep the fuel inside (unlike Chernobyl).

Japan hit by a earthquack again today 3.7.11. What will happend to japan?

Question:

A 7.2 magnitude hit's japan this night. What will happend to japan? Can tsunami come again?

Answer:

Earthquakes are a common thing in Japan because of where the country is located (above 3 major tectonic plate fault lines). Seismologists predict Japan will continue to have large earth quakes for the next 10-20 years (although no one can accurately predict when).

Tsunamis can occur any time from the larger of these earthquakes. However it depends where the epicenter of the quake is as not all large earthquakes will cause tsunamis.

Question:

What do you truly think what the Japanese think about you.

Answer:

USA: I don't really know what they were thinking about me, and honestly I do not care if I gave a good or wrong impression to the people. I know I didn't acted rude or impolite to them. At that time, my English was not as good as now. I think some girls think my accent was cute (LoL, I hope they did.) I haven't really communicated with the local people there, except for our American guides.
