Why is Japan so strict for importing pets?

Question:

I heard it takes 6-12 months get approval for a pet to enter Japan. Why do they have this rule?

Answer:

Japan is a rabies free country so quarantine is essential for all pets.

The quarantine period is not necessarily 6-12 months, in fact it can take as little as 12 hours depending on what country you are bringing it from and whether or not you have the correct documentation proving that your pet is free from deceases.

The pet will also need to be chipped for the authorities to cross check with the documentation provided.

I understand that you will have to inform the appropriate authorities 40 days in advance of any such transportation of your pet.

Your local vet should be able to give you all the information you require.

Where can I buy baking supplies in Tokyo?

Question:

Answer:

You should be able to buy flour and sugar from any supermarket. Some convenience stores will also stock these items but could be a little more expensive. You should be able to find baking supplies at any of the larger department stores like Loft or Takashimaya.

Answer:

In addition to whaling, another issue is Hague Convention.

More than 90% of child custody after divorce is taken by mother in Japan because there is strong value that "Mothers should raise children". There is little concept of joint custody.

Many Japanese mothers have "abducted" (That's how Western nations call it) their children to Japan after having a divorce with a foreign husband. But Japanese government have never joined or tried to join Hague Convention until recently.

Many Western nations have pressured Japan to join Hague Convention for years. Japanese government finally announced this spring that they are willing to join. But there's been little progress since then.

What kind of Japanese tea cup is this?

it is taller than most japanese tea cups, no handle, dark grayish, maybe brown? I can't quite remember. I believe it is common but they all look kind of hand made out of clay or something like that because it is all bumpy.

It is bigger than a normal teacup so that the busy guys behind the counter will not have to keep filling it up.

Free flight to Japan?

Question:

So I've been reading a little bit about this whole first 10,000 foreigners get a free ticket to and from Japan. It's got me all freaking excited. But where do I sign up? Do I have to wait a little while for more info or what?

Answer:

It's just an idea at this time. Proposed sign ups wouldn't be until April of next year, if at all. There's also a catch, you have to write about why you want to go there. You have to put your thoughts on line so other people can read them. They're going to make you work for it, one way or another. They just aren't going to hand them out for free.

Middle school in japan?

Question:

i understand that in middle school in japan they have to take a test to get into high school but i was wondering the format of the test like do they have multiple choice parts or is it all fill in the blank and short answer ( i am writing a speech about education in the U.S and i wanted to use the japanese system as an example of their rigorous level..) thanks

Answer:

>i understand that in middle school in japan they have to take a test to get into high school

This kind of test is not what they take "in middle school". Each test is offered by each high school because this is an entrance exam. So they go to a high school they want to join and take a test.

>but i was wondering the format of the test like do they have multiple choice parts or is it all fill in the blank and short answer

It depends on each test. There is no answer. In fact, one test has many questions. So it depends on each question.

Do they have cheerleaders in japan?

Question:

i'm just curious do they have cheerleader in japan like in canada and u.s? and also i remember reading someones answer on yahoo somewhere that students in japan cant dye their hair (i'm guessing high school students) which is just absolutely ridiculous, i know, but i was just wondering if that was true. thankx in advance!!

Answer:

Yes. There are some cheerleaders but it is a bit different to US. I don't know about Canada.
I think Japanese cheerleaders do not belong to hierachy such as Jock and Queen Bee.

They just support the team.

Some Japanese students do hair dye. Some school allow students to change hair colour but some school don't. They are just not following the rules.
I know the rule about hair colour is ridiculous and I hate it when I was a teenager.

Well 99 percent of Japanese has black hair.
A lot of Japanese school does not accept student to wear makeup, piercing and tatoo.
A lot of adult think School is place to study not for fashion show.
They don't accept students' their own style like US high school.

I think young girls shouldn’t dye hair too much because it damage their healthy fine looking hair.

Japanese anime lovers?

Question:

There are alot of people in countires other than Japan who love anime, like me, and it's considered okay that we like anime and can obsess over it with other anime lovers. However, apparently, if you obsess over anime and you're Japanese, you get called an Otaku which i belive means a nerd or geek. So basically it's offensive. But people in other countries call themselevs Otakus but it's not offensive, it just means you love anime. Anyway my point is, why do Japanese make anime but then get called a geek or nerd (otaku) if they love them? (sorry this question's abit all over the place and probably doesn't make sense, i was just curious, though)

Answer:

Well I don't think they'd be made fun of for having just a normal liking of Anime. However, in Japan, like many other countries I'd guess, people can take it too far. And when people take things too far, then they're generally ridiculed for it.
When it goes as far as being called an Otaku, I imagine the person being obsessed with Anime and making it their life. And I think when it goes that far, that's when it gets a little weird, and people make fun. I can't imagine it being any different in Western countries either.

Japanese proverbs and food?

Question:

You can't eat the moshi in the picture
Can't eat a painted cake
Even when a samurai hasn't eaten, he holds his toothpick high
****
What is the meaning of these proverbs? How should we understand them? Can anyone explain?
Thanks in advance

Answer:

Japanese proverbs are called Kotowaza in Japanese and cover a large amount of different sayings about different areas of Japanese culture. Some are quite similar to ones that you can find in the English language and some I expect are imported from Chinese proverbs.

You can't eat the mochi in the picture
絵に描いた餅(は食えぬ)
e ni kaita mochi (wa kuenu)

This means that no matter how good the imagination, dream or fantasy is, it is still not reality. The deeper meaning could possibly be to not spend your days daydreaming about something that cannot be done or achieved.

Even when a samurai hasn't eaten, he still holds his toothpick high
bushi wa kuwanedo taka youji
武士はく食わねど高楊枝

This means that you always pretend to be rich, even if you aren't in the same way that a samurai would pretend to clean his teeth with a toothpick as if he had just eaten a feast, even if he hadn't. The deeper meaning could possibly be about honour and pride and not letting things get you down.

I haven't heard of the painted cake one, but I guess it is probably the same as the mochi one... mochi is sometimes called rice cake in English, so could just be a different translation of it.

Questions about moving to Japan?

Question:

Hey guys, I LOVE Japan and I plan to go there for 90 days in 2012 but I am just wondering, say I love it so much I want to move:

1. What is the average salary like? By that I mean, will I be 'poor' even though I will have a masters in Software Engineering and possibly a PhD. To future clarify I mean: Even though Tokyo is an expensive place to live in, will any wage I make with said qualifications counter that to a large extent or would I have more 'net money' if I was to stay in Australia where I am now.

I know money is a bit of a douche thing to ask but financial stability matters to me.

2. What is it like for foreigners and high job positions? Would I be just as easily accepted for the job if I showed better qualities, or would a Japanese person be preferred? (I am fairly sure this is a no, just asking though).

Answer:

You are unlikely to be hired as an engineer unless you can offer something the Japanese really need that they can't find among themselves. That is why English teaching is the number one employment vehicle for foreigners. Salary depends on the type of work you are doing and the skills required (not to mention the competition for the job). English teachers make the minimum wage of 250,000 yen per month before taxes. Hard to say what you'd make for software given so many variables. But for cost of living, which you should also be researching, it is very high, especially in Tokyo for rent. Look at
www.tokyopriceguide.com for some good useful info.

Is there a part of japan like the 1930?

Question:

Like when women wore kimonos and, there's ancient buildings that you can actually live in and, stuff like that. I need a place like how that was it has to be a place where people still live though.

Answer:

No, by 1930's, Japan had been pretty much modernized.
Unfortunately, most of the old buildings and houses in major cities were burned down during the war with the US (1941-1945).
Some of them are still left in some rural areas, but women are not wearing kimono any more (except for special occasions).
The "anime world" that you dream of has gone away a long time ago!

BTW, I like your avatar. That's awfully cute! One of the best avatars I've ever seen.
Your name: Niji goes along pretty well with your avatar. A very fancy combination. I am impressed!

What part of Japan are you from?

Japan : What kind of people that rides motorcycle ?

Question:

How old are the average motorcyclists there approximately ? What are their jobs ? Are they students or workers ?

Answer:

Not many young people ride motor cycle these days.

One of the biggest market is small sized motor cycle( 50cc. bikes including scooters) for people's everyday shopping, commuting etc... People can ride this small motor cycle if they have a driver license for car. The tax and insurances are extremely cheap for these motor cycles. Many household wives ride these 50cc scooters.

Next major user group of motor cycle is middle aged man (let's say 30 to 50) and they love rather big and high-end motorcycles, BMW, H/D, Docati, or over 1000 cc Japanese bikes.. Motorcycle craze in Japan was about 1970-1990, roughly speaking. Those people who were young during that time still love motorcycles. Those people have got older and got more money now, and riding high-end motor cycles.

Edit: another very major category of motorcycle is very unique in Japan, that is big size scooters.
250cc to 650cc scooters are also common, and these are mostly owned by also middle aged men.
