Should I visit Japan in the Winter (early to mid January) or Summer (mid May to early June)?

Question:

I am planning a trip to Japan around my sister's free time from school and curious as to what people would recommend. Our goal would be to see a few larger cities and some of the country side, areas we visit is fairly open if any are better at certain times.

I think winter is better because it's too hot and humid in summer in Japan. But it's up to you.
