What is Tokyo, Japan like?

Question:

I would like to know what Tokyo, Japan is like. I'm thinking about moving there. I've been into Japan's history, culture and lifestyle. I'd be living in Japan for roughly a year if I decide to go with my brother who's going for work. I speak Japanese very well and understand Japanese culture very well. Thanks for the answers.

Answer:

You can't go with your brother unless your brother is your sole guardian and you rely on him to live (dependent). Are your parents gone and he is your sole supporter? If not, then you would have a hard time coming to Japan to live with your brother.

Tokyo is not bad, it is common for people to say it is simply a concrete jungle, which central Tokyo might be, concrete can used to describe many Japanese cities including Kyoto, but Tokyo is huge, filled with mountains, hiking trails, nature etc.

This is Tokyo:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Fujisa…
As this is Tokyo as well:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sunset…

Step out of Central Tokyo to experience that. It's like Kyoto, Central Kyoto (Karasuma district) is a major business hub with department stores, shops, super modern train station, so is Osaka and other major cities of Japan. Step just out of Central Kyoto or the metropolitan areas to visit all the famous temples, shrines etc you read about.

The difference between tenpanyaki and okonomiyaki?

Question:

Well if there was an okonomiyaki and a western style tenpanyaki (where they throw stuff and do show) how would you explain the difference to customers?

Customers would obviously think, ...well tenpanyaki got more show therefore might as well go there.
How would you upsell okonomiyaki over tenpanyaki?

Answer:

Teppanyaki is anything that's cooked on teppan (literally iron (steel) plate). Okonomiyaki is salty pancake that's usually cooked on teppan, so technically it qualifies as teppanyaki but is usually considered as a different category of dish.

Okonomiyaki is cheaper, more of a everyday sort of food than teppanyaki whose price ranges from so-so to expensive.

Roughly how much would you need for just normal holiday in japan?

Question:

i've never been to japan before and i'm looking to go on holiday with my girlfriend. i'm not looking for going to expensive places or expensive restaurant. Just a place where we'll be able to stay for couple of weeks or more places to visit and places to eat. i would say we're young adults and got jobs and that but i'm not sure how much we'll need that's all. we might go to osaka or maybe tokyo depends on what the answers might be.

thank you for looking/answering

Answer:

Depends on what "normal" is. You don't have to spend a fortune, even if a lot of prices are often high.
If you want to travel, look into getting a JR Rail Pass as well (see www.japanrailpass.net) and you can ride to your heart's content across Japan.
Hotels don't have to be expensive, if you don't mind something more spartan. You can spend as little as 2300 Yen per night - and that's in Tokyo. Try looking at:

How to create a Japanese Pen Name?

Question:

I was reading a manga called Bakuman and these two kids made the pen name: Muto Ashirogi (first name, last name). How do these Mangaka or ANY Japanese person create these odd pen names? Ashirogi, Kawaguchi, etc. Are they actual Japanese surnames?

Answer:

I have never heard of Ashirogi, but Kawaguchi (川口) is an extremely common surname.

Names in other manga often use randomly combined Japanese sounds and/or words.

Ichigo (from Bleach), for example, could mean "strawberry" in Japanese (though the kanji they use is different [一護]). His last name, Kurosaki [黒崎], is a common surname and place name.

What do the Japanese think of North Korea?

Question:

Answer:

Same as most of the world, except there's more of an actual threat with the country being so close.

It's a country run by a corrupt government, which keeps the people poor and uninformed.

Poor people take desperate measures sometimes, so if the leader decides it's time to hate on Japan and attack Japan, then a lot of people will follow suit. North Korea's government knows that if they actually did do that though that they're going to lose in the end, so they just come up with some provocative act every few years to let off some steam.

I think most Japanese just want North Korea to open up.

Note though that English and Japanese name the countries differently, so there's a different perception involved in that. In English we say South Korea. Japanese is Kankoku. North Korea is Kita Chosen (North Chosen). There's no South Chosen, so the image is like Kankoku is a sovereign country of it's own, whereas North Korea is just a left-over from old times.

The Korean peninsula was also colonized by Japan, so there are still some tensions between not only Japan and North Korea, but South Korea as well.

In general, people just want to get along. There have been some attempts at that from both sides in recent years. North Korea released previously kidnapped Japanese nationals. Japan sometimes sends over aid in various forms.

I think most of the world just feels sorry for the common North Koreans that they're so poor.

What do people do for entertainment in Tokyo ?

Question:

I really need this information because I am writing a report about Tokyo, Japan & I cant find this stuff on Google . . .

Answer:

Tokyo is a mega city, that one can find literally anything to do. From shopping in Ginza and Shibuya, to night clubs in Shinjuku and Roppongi, Tokyo has something for everyone. They have traditional culture like Kabuki, Sumo Wrestling, and festivals at Shinto/Buddhist shrines. The shopping in Tokyo is superb, Ginza is very upscale. Many international brands (chanel, abercrombie) have their Japan flagship stores in Ginza. Harajuku and Shibuya are known as the hangout of teenagers and young adults. Shibuya and Harajuku are center's for fashion in Japan. Shinjuku is home to more foreigners then any other part of Tokyo, so there will be a more 'international flair' in this area. Also, many people enjoy baseball so there are often games during baseball season. Also, Disneyland is right around the corner in nearby Chiba prefecture!

Is japan a good place to go on holiday?

Question:

I really want to go on holiday to japan but is it safe and a family friendly place?

Answer:

Yes, it is safe now!! The majority of Japan is back to normal and operating as usual. All international airports are operating and this even includes Sendai Airport, which was damaged by the tsunami, and the bullet trains are all running as normal. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs Travel Advisory has even been lowered to normal so should have no problems.

The must see cities in Japan are Tokyo and Kyoto. Attractions in Tokyo include the Asakusa district famous for Sensoji temple and Nakamise shopping street; Meiji Shrine; The Imperial Palace; Ginza and Harajuku.

Help with a Japanese online shop?

Question:

I'd like to buy the limited edition of 「死神と少女」 game for PSP

Apparently the limited editions are sold only the first few days after the game's release.... or at least I think so. I don't really want to buy the most regular one from Amazon.jp

Maybe someone could help me to search for it around the web? (japanese web of course). It doesn't matter if it's new or used. I'm not a gamer, but my friend has it and I played it with her, kinda fell in love with its story...

I don't really know how to search. It's my first time wanting/buying a game, so I'd really appreciate any help.
Here are some links for more info: http://www.takuyo.co.jp/products/shinigami/tokuten.html

Passport question please help?

Question:

what do you do if your passport gets lost or stolen while in japan
what is an ePassport
why are passports so valuable and need to be looked after on holidays
THANKYOU FOR UR HELP!!!

Answer:

Without passport, you cannot get out of your country.
Without passport, you cannot enter any foreign country.
Without passport, you cannot stay in any foreign country.

If you were US citizen and lost your passport in Japan, you should report it to the US Embassy in Japan IMMEDIATELY and ask them to issue a temporary passport.
Otherwise, you would be in a big trouble: 1) you would be regarded as an illegal alien; 2) you cannot get out of Japan, which means you would be thrown in jail for good unless you can legally prove who you are.

Using "ano" in japanese?

Question:

Toshokan wa ano biru no tonari desu. - please explain how "ano" was used here?
I know the sentence means "The library is next to that building." but if I were to
translate it, it's gonna be "Toshokan wa SONO biru no tonari desu". BTW. There's a statement
prior that. "Asoko ni ookii biru ga arimasu ne" I'm guessing it has something to do with
that...I just want a "textbook" explanation. thanks

Answer:

Easiest explanation...

kono biru = this building
sono biru = that building (next to you)
ano biru = that building (away from both of us)

Without a noun to modify, these become...

kore = this
sore = that (next to you)
are = that (away from both of us)

If describing a place (as opposed to an object)...

koko = here
soko = there (next to you)
asoko = over there (away from both of us)

"asoko ni ookii biru ga arimasu ne" = "there's a big building over there"

What do you think about mean not-asian people?

Question:

i'm a guy and i really like to act like a cute asian person (just like lee hongki in your beautiful or tegoshi yuya in Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge) but people think i act girly and stupid when they see me talking to someone like that! i don't get embarrassed about doing that but whats the reason that make people who are not asians too mean to me T__T" and what do you guys think about these sort of people and about my situation :P by the way, i love asian people cuz they are always nice to me :D but others are too mean!! specially arabs :P

Answer:

Possibly it depends on cultural influence. I'm not sure where you are living now, but maybe that could have something to do with it? But...

You should just be yourself, and not worry how others think of your personality, you're not hurting anyone! There's too many other things that will also make you worry in life!!! lol. And, you will find that people who appreciate you for you.

Though I wonder, why you said only "not-asian people"? Because, ethnicity does not determine your personality. You will be able to find mean people of any kind, but you will also find many nice people as well. :)

So I think, don't sweat it and keep your chin up!

Have a good day!

Just know 'were'???? WERE???? I sure hope you can read better than you can write because the answer is to be found using Google. I, personally, am not going to look it up for you. But there are generally plenty of people on here that get their jollies doing other people's homework, so maybe you'll get lucky. Because if you DON'T get told the answer, you are going to be doing some R-E-A-D-I-N-G to find your answer.

Final answer..... Open up Google and type in the same question you asked above. And don't ask 'were' your browser is located.
