Is hitchhiking through Japan really as easy as people say it is?

Question:

I will be going to Japan tomorrow. I have been to Japan before, but I have never tried hitchhiking there before. I know Japan is safe, but if I am carrying some heavy bags would most Japanese people just drive passed me to avoid helping me with my heavy bags or are they friendly enough to offer me help and a ride? Japan is really expensive and I just want to save money through hitchhiking. Has anyone on here hitchhiked through Japan before and what was your experience? Any tips?

Answer:

You will have a hard time that is for sure as Japanese rarely talk to strangers. Maybe the guy in the book overcame the odds but he was one of the lucky few. You can try but there is a high chance of failure i am afraid

Where can I find photos of Hashima Island, Japan when people actually lived there?

Question:

I have no problem finding photos of present day Hashima Island (Battleship Island) and all of its ruin and urban decay, but I can't find any pictures of it pre-1974 abandonment. I'm very curious as to what life was like there when it was the most densely populated place on the planet.

Does anyone know of any websites that have pictures of Hashima Island when it was bustling with life?

If you were given a list of Japanese names in English letters, how would you tell which were girls names?

Question:

Any good resource to tell which names are names of girls
which names are names of guys
and which names can be names of girls or guys

You might encounter such a list in situations involving Japan and therefor this is an appropriate question for travel => Japan

Any website to help know the difference between guys and girls names?

Answer:

These days, you basically just have to become familiar with Japanese names. There are some types of names that are more common for men than for women and vice versa, and you can use that as a guide, but it's not foolproof. For example, many names that include the element mi (e.g. Masami, Aimi, Akemi, Izumi, Manami, Miki, Misaki) are women's names. However, some names that include the mi sound (e.g. Fumiya, Takumi) that can be men's names. In my experience, endings like mi, na, ri, ka, ho, and ko are very common in women's names, while endings like ro, mu, to, ta, and ki are more common in men's names. BUT there are ALWAYS names that don't fit these patterns at all (e.g. the previously mentioned Takumi, girls' names like Saki, the female versions of Yuki and Natsuki, etc) and there are many names that appear to be unisex names when written in English letters. In those cases, the distinction (if there is one) will be in the kanji used to write the name. Keep in mind that for most names there are many many ways to write the name using kanji, but probably only one way to write it in English letters.

Im going to move to japan after i graduate college do they date educated white guys out there?

Question:

don't worry im going to take Japanese course to speak the language fluently

Answer:

Approx 60% of Japanese male go to universities or colleges after graduating from high school. No Japanese would think you are an "educated" guy just because of your college education.

BTW, you can never be a fluent speaker of our language just by taking a Japanese language course in your college. Sounds like you are totally ignorant about the difficulties in learning a foreign language. In fact, many foreigners who have been living in Japan for decades are still struggling with it. They know how difficult it is to speak Japanese "fluently."

More important fact is that majority of Japanese women look down on arrogant and ignorant guys like you. The only good news for you is that you may have a chance to meet some sluts who are messing around with foreigners. We call them "public toilet."

etc how is payment system :) compared to usa for english teachers :) whats the annual salary

salary we how much english teachers get paid for 2 years of service with all services provided by school a room etc

no other expenses can they earn 1 million yen etc????????????????

whats the 2 years salary plz say me in dollars

whats the highest salary etc? for 2 years for English teacher etc

Answer:

This question is moot because there is no way that you are going to get hired as an English teacher. It's almost as impossible as your plan to get your own boat and go tuna fishing. This is simply not going to happen.

But to answer your question, which I must due to the AR group, an average figure would be 250,000 yen/month. I have made almost double that figure but it involved teaching 14 lessons a day.

Now, the above isn't for 2 years, but if you can't do the math, well, no...... I'm not going there.

My dad is a citizen of japan and I am hoping to go live there for 6 months are there any legal perks?

Question:

I am 20 and at first was hoping to get dual citizenship, I don't know if that is possible. My dad does not live in Japan but was born there and has yet to give up his citizenship. I have been looking at Visa's and I just feel like there should be an easier way. Thank you!!!

Answer:

If your dad is still a Japanese citizen, and your birth is registered in the family registrar "Koseki" (ask your dad he should know), then legally you can apply for a Japanese passport as a Japanese citizen.

Legally speaking you have to choose a nationality you wish to keep, and after 22 years there is a chance it can become invalid if they find out you didn't.

Realistically there are many people who keep both after age 22 and just show the US passport when in the US and the Japanese passport when in Japan.

Since you are still only 20 and only want to go there for six months, then there is no legal reason that is preventing you from doing so, as long as all the paperwork is in order, you should contact the Japanese embassy/consulate for more information.

Alternatively, you can also apply for something called "Child of a Japanese National" with your US passport if you decide not to pursue a Japanese passport.

---
Again since they are twenty (20) years old right now, no need to renounce nationality or anything. Dual Nationality is legal (in Japan) for those under 22 years of age.

Japanese people - who are kappa in Japanese folklore?

Question:

What is their attitude to humans? Are they dangerous? Intelligent? Have you ever seen one?

Answer:

Indifference, they would see you the same way you see fish. Men are viewed as inferior creatures, a higher form of monkey. Playful creatures, but polite. They don't seem to realize that people can't breathe underwater so they get a bit rough sometimes. They can speak and have a highly organized social structure and an obsession with being polite. Their attitude is it's OK to rape, kidnap and so forth as long as they aren't caught. If treated with respect they will return the favor. They breathe water but don't require breath anywhere nearly as often as land creatures. Like all reptilians, they are very lawful and rational and hold true to their promises.

Of course, there are no reptilian people. Right?

Can you open a bank account in Tokyo with US dollars?

Is it possible to open a bank account with US dollars in Tokyo? All the methods I've found for exchanging money (at the Japanese airport or in America) seem to want to take 1-8% of my money. Is there a way around this?

Answer:

You can't open an account if you do not live in Japan.

If you live in Japan, some banks offer foreign currency account service. So you can.

Pet friendly base housing in Okinawa (USMC)?

Question:

My husband and I are looking into a possible move to Okinawa in the new year. He is a second Lieutenant. We have one child and two pets, a dog and a cat. Im curious to know about base housing and the chances of us obtaining a pet friendly house. From what I have read it says not to ship your pets over until you know if you have been granted pet friendly housing because it is limited and if your pets are already there you would need to send them back, properly dispose of them (eeks!) or forfeit your housing allowance by living off base. Does that mean you HAVE to live on base or you pay for cost of living out of pocket? Our animals are a part of our family and if what I have read is true putting overseas as a top choice for a future move will not be such a appealing idea. Thanks!

Answer:

You're asking this in the totally wrong place. Let's even suppose that you get an answer that says everything is cool. The person giving the response says that they were in the military in Okinawa for 15 years and had a cat and a dog and there was no problem. And you bring your animals over, knowing full well that "it says not to ship your pets over until you know if you have been granted pet friendly housing because it is limited" but you're going to go with the guy with experience. And it turns out your helpful friend is wrong. You're now told you can't keep the animals. Do you think that saying "Oh, but a guy on Y!A said it would be okay." is going to mean squat?

Either your husband or yourself, which ever is in the military, needs to talk to your superior officer and start tracking down the currently official version.

I would like to teach English in Japan, BUT...?

Question:

I am not a native speaker.
I moved to the United States when I was 12, and my English is better than any native speaker's. I have NO ACCENT, I received at least a B on all of my college essays. I have a Bachelor's degree.
Many Japanese school and recruiters indicate that they require native speakers, but I don't believe being born in the United States will necessarily make one more knowledgeable of English.
I see so many native Americans (heh) misspelling common words, it's ridiculous!

Anyway, how can I convince them to hire me? Is this not a big deal to most Japanese schools?
Thank you.

Answer:

"I moved to the United States when I was 12, and my English is better than any native speaker's."

Better than any native speaker's? Meaning no native English speaker has better English than you? Lolz. Either you're incredibly pretentious, or you made an English error. :P (Sorry about the correction, I see someone already addressed that but I wrote this earlier) But seriously, your English sounds almost native level, but from what I understand that is sometimes not enough for Japanese English schools. I would ask the school specifically and be sure to mention that you spent x amount of years in exclusively English schools including four (or however many) in an English university. Was your major by any chance English? That would help. Perhaps get one of the English teaching qualifications or certifications such as TESOL/TEFL. Their weak points with English are usually grammar and pronunciation, so not having a strong accent will definitely help you, but make sure your grammar is up to par. Also, the Japanese idea of an English speaking foreigner is a white person, so if you fit that physical description it helps a bit too.

Is it safe to buy ceramics from Japan?

Question:

I know stuff on the shelves here in the US are screened for radioactivity but I want to buy some ceramics that would be shipped directly from Japan so I'm not sure what types of screening are in place for just a personal purchase.

I also don't know much about radioactivity and its effects on non-food/biological products.

The ceramics I'm thinking of are Tokoname Tea Pots. While the I know Tokoname is pretty far from Fukishima, the only company I could find online that seemed trustworthy and sold these is O-Cha, which was based out of Fukishima before the nuclear disaster. They have since moved their base of operations to Kyoko, but I have no idea if the teapots were in Fukushima or not.

Thoughts anyone?

Answer:

Nothing in the US is screened for radioactivity ! Why would it be ?
You have nothing to worry about when buying tea pots from Japan. Don't you think it would be harming the seller if there was any danger ?

I need to know a japanese shampoo without salt?

Question:

Hi guys,i am living in Japan and i am trying to find a shampoo without salt...does anybody knows ?
thankss

Answer:

Actually, lots of shampoo manufacturers add salt. But there are a lot of people who are 'worried' about the salt content. You'll just have to look for it on the label. Sorry, I'm not going out and looking on labels. Generally if the label says 'natrium' it has salt in it.

How much should a 2 week trip to Japan cost for two people?

Question:

Like comprehensive... including food, transportation, plane tickets, hotels, spending money etc etc

I'm doing a little math myself and it keeps coming up to about 10,000 with one week guided tour of south Japan and plane tickets. Does that seem right?

Answer:

The airfare quoted is about right, but you don't have to spend the wildly high amounts for hotels and other things others quoted unless you want to. There are far less expensive budget accommodations if you want, and you can eat modestly for about USD13 each at an inexpensive restaurant, or for even less if you get a bento or groceries at a market.
But you don't say where you are going, so there are a lot of variables. If you want to go all over the country, consider getting a JR Rail Pass before you arrive in Japan (see www.japanrailpass.net). Or you can get a regional JR Pass for certain areas after you arrive. And you can get a subway day pass for about 1000 yen in many major cities. And there are overnight buses between Tokyo and Osaka or Kyoto, for example.
A few cheaper places to stay are at

In fact if you have never stayed in a Japanese inn (ryokan) before, I recommend it at least a night just for the experience.
As for shopping, that is solely up to you. You can spend a couple of dollars here and there for some small mementos, or go all out where the sky is the limit. Again, it's up to you. But don't believe all the scare stories that you need thousands and thousands of dollars - if you want somewhere to stay that is decent yet clean, you easily can.

Did Japan nuclear reactors melt down?

Question:

Were they able to contain it? I cannot find the answer.

Answer:

You can follow the progress of the event from day one here:
http://www.iaea.org/newscenter/news/2011…

Reactor #1's fuel was 55% damaged (which is what meltdown means). This is down from the first estimates of 75% damaged.

Reactor #2's fuel was 35% damaged (up from 30%)

Reactor #3's fuel was 35% damaged (up from 30%)

Reactor #4 was off-line with the fuel in the cooling ponds.

Reactors #5 and #6 were in stable shut down.

The containment vessel contained the nuclear fuel, unlike Chernobyl which had about half it's highly radioactive fuel spread all over the countryside. When nuclear fuel rods overheat they produce hydrogen gas. In Chernobyl this gas built up and blew the top off the reactor. In Fukushima, the gas was vented and built up inside the building exterior shell and exploded. This damaged the building, but not the containment vessel. It took a few weeks to get instrumentation working again so the results have changed over time.
http://www.world-nuclear.org/info/cherno…

If anything, the situation shows how safe nuclear power is. Consider that forty year old plants were hit with an earthquake five times the strength they were designed for and yet they still shut down safely. The generators came on like they were supposed to when grid power was cut. Then the tsunami hit and the generators were wiped out. However, the battery backup still worked for the designed eight hours. The problem happened when no new generators could be put in. Even so the problems have been minimal--media scare mongering for ratings not withstanding.

Here is an informative article describing the situation:
http://bravenewclimate.com/2011/03/13/fu…

And here is where you find current, factual status information:
http://www.iaea.org/newscenter/news/tsun…

And a slide presentation that describes the effects:

And here is a chart that helps make sense of the numbers:

Do all schools in Japan require you to already have a working visa and do they all verify degrees/certificates?

Question:

I will be in Japan for about half a year or so participating in the WWOOF Japan program, but I was thinking about maybe teaching English in Japan. I will be staying in Hokkaido to do the WWOOFing. I have taught English here in China for almost a year and a half now, so I was wondering if that alone could score me a job at a private English Language school like an Eikaiwa? I don't have a working visa for Japan, but I have one for China. I like China, but I really need a break from here and I have always dreamed of living and teaching in Japan. I know the competition for teaching jobs in Tokyo and Osaka is really intense because there are so many foreigners there. What about Sapporo? Would someone like me still struggle to find work there or in a smaller city around there? I don't have a degree(just a photoshopped one). I really don't want to use it though. Would any private training centers give me a job with a year and a half worth of teaching experience in China and another year experience teaching ESL in the US?

Answer:

To legally work in Japan you need a status that allows work. Spouses, students, dependents, working holiday holders do not need degrees but can legally work because their status (sometimes with amendments) allows them to work.

However, someone who doesn't have any of these statuses requires to get a status that allows work and that status *generally requires you to have a bachelors degree (in any field) along with a job offer/contract.

However this degree requirement is waived is someone has at least three years experience (proven-documented experience) in the field of instruction. This is up to immigration, but the law stipulates it as a possible waiver. If anyone bothers to actually read immigration law, it says it right there.

The thing you don't want to do is use a fake degree, you will be caught then face other major problems. The other poster is right, the immigration people (the Government) are the ones that inspect the documents, not the schools.

Why are there so many "gropings"in Japan?

Question:

Im a guy and i understand the urge for sexual needs but come on!!! The need to introduce women only carriages, Japanese men taking pictures of women's skirts, groping them and stealign underwear on trains. Yes most countries have it!! But to this extreme I dont think so?? What do u guys think?? Why dont the women come forward and say they are being harassed? Is it relli so serious there are pervert signs??

Answer:

Didn't you (or someone else) post a similar question about a week ago?
Anyway, if you were serious (I guess not), you need to look at this issue from another angle.

I can understand your question, but let me add something else. We know that "gropings" are taking place in those outrageously crowded trains during the rush hours every morning in the big cities. Up until a few years ago, if a woman claimed that she was groped "by this man," standing behind her, the man would be dragged out of the train by other passengers and immediately reported to the police. The man, based solely on her account, would be prosecuted and sent to the court. In almost all cases in this nature (again, until a few years ago), the man in question was "found" guilty no matter how firmly he denies the allegation "as long as he cannot prove his innocence." Something must be wrong with this, ha?

The basic philosophy of the criminal law in most of the democratic countries around the glove, including Japan, is "presumption of innocence," which means you are not guilty unless the prosecutor proves your crime. But, how can they prove it? In a train so crowded that nobody can hardly move, how she can tell "this man touched me from behind?" The real groper may have been one of the guys who dragged him out of the train.

Over the past couple of years, there were some widely-reported groping cases where "suspicious but not guilty" men were released, which can be logically and reasonably understood. But, when they were finally released from six-month imprisonment or so, they had lost everything; jobs, families, homes, social status and money. The woman who was groped by one of the men who happened to be standing behind her was a victim; but the innocent man who lost everything solely because of her proofless claim was also a victim. It is obvious that those male victims have to lose much more than the woman. This is what I mean by "you need to look at this issue from another angle." Do I make any sense?

Which do you like Tokyo Disney Land or Tokyo Disney Sea?

Question:

Do you think disney land is better? Or Disney sea is better? Why do you think so??

Answer:

I have been to both and Tokyo Disney Land is my favourite. Tokyo Disney Land is great if you have never been to a Disney Land before and it also has a lot more rides and fun things for kids. Tokyo Disney Sea is good but is more suited for adults with more shows and performances than rides.

Do people who have an immense interest in japan also have an interest in china?

Question:

Answer:

It depends on what is main driving factor of their interest in Japan. If their interests stems from anime and manga, they would most likely have less interest in China or other Asian countries. However, if the driving factor of their interest in Japan is the language, culture and the arts, then they will most likely be interested in China.

Once again, as the rest of the posters here have said, there is no way to tell accurately as it is based on personal preferences.
