My dad is a citizen of japan and I am hoping to go live there for 6 months are there any legal perks?

Question:

I am 20 and at first was hoping to get dual citizenship, I don't know if that is possible. My dad does not live in Japan but was born there and has yet to give up his citizenship. I have been looking at Visa's and I just feel like there should be an easier way. Thank you!!!

Answer:

If your dad is still a Japanese citizen, and your birth is registered in the family registrar "Koseki" (ask your dad he should know), then legally you can apply for a Japanese passport as a Japanese citizen.

Legally speaking you have to choose a nationality you wish to keep, and after 22 years there is a chance it can become invalid if they find out you didn't.

Realistically there are many people who keep both after age 22 and just show the US passport when in the US and the Japanese passport when in Japan.

Since you are still only 20 and only want to go there for six months, then there is no legal reason that is preventing you from doing so, as long as all the paperwork is in order, you should contact the Japanese embassy/consulate for more information.

Alternatively, you can also apply for something called "Child of a Japanese National" with your US passport if you decide not to pursue a Japanese passport.

Again since they are twenty (20) years old right now, no need to renounce nationality or anything. Dual Nationality is legal (in Japan) for those under 22 years of age.
