How to type in Japanese keyboard (not IME)?

Question:

I was wondering how to transition my keyboard from Microsoft IME to the more traditional kind of Japanese keyboard, where you just need to press one key to get a hiragana symbol. I know most ppl use IME nowadays, but I just want to try the other keyboard for fun/experimental purposes.

I saw that someone asked this before and the answerer wrote:
push ALT key + カタカナ・ひらがなkey

but I don't understand..where is this カタカナ・ひらがなkey?
Because I tried a few things and it didn't work.. -__-

Anyway, I'd appreciate it if anyone could give me an answer.
どうぞ宜しくお願いします。

Answer:

You have to get a new keyboard. Specifically, a Japanese keyboard. Pretty much the same as a standard keyboard, but with hiragana on the keys in addition to the Roman letters. There are also those extra keys that you mentioned. In my Device Manager under Keyboard it shows "Japanese PS/2 Keyboard (106/109 Key)".

The installation isn't the easiest thing to do. Well, it's complicated enough that I don't remember how to do it without instructions whenever I reinstall the OS. But it's not brain surgery either. Here's a link for installing it on Win XP. It will differ slightly with Win 7, but a Google search will turn up something for you.

Here's one for Win 7 just for reference. I looked through it quickly and don't like the way you have to navigate from step to step. Point is, the info is out there.

Did the radiation in Japan spread through ALL of Japan?

Question:

And if so, is it severe? Will it be eventually deadly for all the japanese people, especially the upcoming generations?

Answer:

If you're talking about the radiation from Fukushima, then it didn't. Even if it did, would be virtually impossible for the radiation to retain it's original concentration/potency and therefore lethality while passing through countless objects, namely concrete.
Now, if you're talking about the radiation emitted naturally from trees, light bulbs, sunshine, etc, then I have to tell you that that has been around all over the world for centuries.

What do Japanese boys wear to festivals?

Question:

I'm making a little comic thing, and it's set in a festival in Japan. Anyway, I need to know what Japanese boys wear to festivals. Do they wear their normal clothes, or traditional ones? And if it's traditional, then what do those outfits look like?

Answer:

It depends on each boy. Generally, boys wear normal cloths. Sometimes they wear yukata. Girls wear yukata more often than boys.

If you don't know what yukata is(you said only "traditional ones"), this is it.

What is the general Japanese citizen's view on Chinese people?

Question:

Please hold off any offensive answers... I'm just curious.

I'm Chinese, and I live in an area with a larger than average Asian population, but it's mostly Chinese, Taiwanese, and Korean. Of course, I've read and learned about WWII and things that happened during that time, especially in East Asia. I know many older generations of Chinese people still hate or dislike the Japanese, but younger generations (my age) seem to have no problem with them. Personally, I have to say I like Japanese food and some aspects of Japanese pop culture, but I still wish Japanese-Chinese history could be cleaner.

Anyways..!

I was just wondering what the general Japanese citizen's view is on Chinese people. I'm talking about people who live or have lived in Japan. Do they look down on Chinese people? If so, why? Or is it generally neutral?

Thanks!

Answer:

It depends on each person. Generally, just, some Japanese like them. Some others hate them. It's just like views on other people.

There are some Japanese people who do not have a job and stay home, then often make hateful comments on China on Internet. But they act that way only on Internet.

Is Japan a nice place to live?

Question:

Hows its government? is it fair? do people like living there? how are the people? high morals? America has its ups but also really sucks. I wanna make sure Japan is better if I want to move then when Im older.

Answer:

Nice or not. It depends on many factors like location (where in Japan), which people you talk to, and most importantly, your needs.

So there is no general answer.

Crime rate is very low. So if you hate crimes, Japan is a good place. But its population is aging and declining, there will be many problems caused by that in the future.

In Japanese culture, is there an animal symbol for death?

Question:

What are some other symbols

Answer:

as for plants, I know the Chrysanthemum is associated with death.
I'm thinking, but I do not see so many. I think negative animal associations are fairly universal. The first person mentioned crows, and black cats was white my wife (Japanese) said when I asked her. European and Asian culture are not completely different, you know. The number 4, as you may know, is associated with death, because of its reading is the same as the word for death ("shi.") Getting back to animals, there are no shortage of supernatural beings associated with death, such as ghosts and demons and monsters, but I really can't think of any real animals that are not shared by the West (Europe and North America.)

Do Japan hates African American people?

Question:

I'm going to visit Japan for 2 weeks to learn about their culture and to taste their delicious food there, also I would like to travel around Japan to meet different people, and not to mention I like Japanese women, but my black friends told me that Japanese people likes White people better, because they are more superior and rich than black people, also they mock black people by making the blackface, and if they see a white person they worship them and show them around, however if they see a black person, they laugh and teases them, is that true and I saw it on Youtube too.

Answer:

your question reeks of ignorance and is so stereotypical that it offends me greatly. i suggest that you stay home instead.

Being a female in this field is rare, and even rarer in Japan.
So, I'm also concerned about gender discrimination there. Is it as bad as what people said where you don't get promoted to higher management level if you are a female even if you're capable?

Answer:

There are many kinds of engineers. It depends on which one. But generally, it's 4-5M yen as another says.

>Is it as bad as what people said where you don't get promoted to higher management level if you are a female even if you're capable?

Putting being a female aside, it's difficult to get promotion if you get pregnant and leave work for a few years to care your children. Or it's even difficult to stay in the job.

What is the cheapest way to travel from Osaka to Sapporo?

Question:

i'm completely confused by all the busy transportation roots in Japan.
Can the cheapest mean be a bus or a train or simply a flight?

But the cheapest (but hardest) might be this plan: about 14,000 yen

Tokyo -> Sapporo : Bus + Ferry

I sent a package to Japan today, but?

Question:

at the post office, the lady clerk said, "you do not have a zip code" I realized that myself too. since I did not want to drive all the way back home, contact the receiver to ask for it, reprint the address, take out the old address and tape up the new one again, and wait until next day to drive back all the way to the post office to deliver it, I just went ahead and paid $30 and shipped it.

Will it get there in Japanese address ? how kind is postal worker in japan ?

Answer:

Most likely, yes.

Just think of your own address without a zipcode. It wouldn't be hard to pinpoint the correct address and even if it goes to the wrong address by chance, they'll try re-delivering to the correct address. I don't know how it is in western countries but Japanese postal workers will go out of their way to help.

A couple questions for those people who live/have lived/immigrated to Japan.?

Question:

First off a little about myself. I am currently 20 years old, turning 21 in October of this year. I am going into my 3rd year of college at the University of Maine at Presque Isle for a Business bachelors with a focus in management. I have always been fascinated with Japan and its culture / society. I am an anime love (I know that Japan is generally nothing like what it is portrayed in an anime. [Bleach fan]). I am currently attempting to self teach myself the Japanese language using Rosetta Stone levels 1, 2 and 3. I find that it is going fairly well so far. about halfway through lesson Unit 1 in level 1.
I have held jobs at a few different places since I was 15 and am currently running the inventory at my parents store. Nothing major but it always helps. I am also going to try and go on a 3 month student exchange to Tokyo to take a 12 credit Intensive Japanese language course, this will allow me to get a good feel for the country and maybe even help me scout some employers? I am just looking forward to the experience =]

Now for the questions.

1. How hard would it be for me to get a job using my degree in Japan, doesn't have to be Tokyo but I love the city and want to be near one. Won't be for a couple more years, just a general question on how foreigners do in Japan.

2. I look at pictures and read websites on current culture in Japan, (http://www.dannychoo.com is my favorite at the moment) and it seems like foreigners are not uncommon as long as they have gone to college have a degree and know the language to a degree. Confirm/Deny?

3. I know that children learn Kanji immediately entering school all the way through high school. Is there a curriculum or book chain that I can use to help? Or is there a easy way to learn Kanji, it is the only part of the language proving to make me a little nervous.

I found some extremely cheep plane tickets from airlines.com i believe it was that go from Boston to Tokyo for like 300$ however the real question is How much Yen should I have for a 3 month stay during the exchange? I will be staying at the dorms but I will need to buy food. (not a fan of fast food, I like to stay healthy, running working out ect so I cook more than eat out)

5. Anything else you would like to share about Japan or advice to give me?

All answers will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Answer:

1, Generally, it's very hard to get a decent job in Japan now as Japan is in the middle of worst recession after WW2.

2, It depends on what you mean by common. Generally, there are not many foreigners in Japan.

3, I think you can search on Amazon or something to find a good book. There is no easy way to learn kanji.

4, I think $1500 for 1 month, $4500 for 3 months is reasonable.

A simple question for my japanese Homewrok?

Question:

Can you please fill in the the blank and translate it.

Ano hito wa (__________________) desu ga,jitsu wa amari shigoto o shinain desu yo.

I'm suppose to put an adjective(doesn't matter whether its Na or I keyoshi) + sou, example:

Himasou
Takasou
Yasusou

I would have figure out myself,but i don't understand the sentence,that is why i need a translation too.Thanks

Answer:

The sentence is:
Ano hito wa - That person is
desu ga - but
jitsu wa - the truth is
amari - not very much
shigoto - work
wo shinain desu yo - doesn't do

All together:
That person seems _________ but the truth is that they don't really work that much.

Adjectives:
Himasou - Seems free (not busy)
Takasou - Seems expensive/rich
Yasusou - Seems cheap/not rich

So, I'd say that the answer is "takasou". Therefore, your finished sentenced would be:
Ano hito wa takasou desu ga, jitsu wa amari shigoto wo shinain desu yo.
That person seems rich but the truth is that they don't really work that much.

Hope this helps! :)

Japanese Hair Straightening?

Question:

So, I initially plan to go to a Japanese Hair Salon in Japan and get the hair straightening system to straighten my hair.

(1) Are there restrictions before the process can be done to your hair? I mean, can it be done to all types of hair? (coz I had mine relaxed several years ago)

(2) Is it worth it? The salon I am looking at has it at around 7,000 yen so the price is okay but I wonder if it would really make my hair silky smooth and straight?

thanks!

Answer:

1.)Yes,some restrictions.
-No perms
-They can't work with thinning hair from perms. ect.

Yes it can.All types,It depends on what salon you are going to,and what treatment you are getting and as to what extent.

2.)If you are getting a japanese perm, yes. If you are getting it just flat ironed,it lasts longer, and still pretty worth it.Much better than american hair straigtenings. It will make your hair, really pretty.

What are the expected health effects outside Japan, considering Fukushima?

Question:

More importantly, what is the best source to follow this news, since there are too many extreme postive and negative outlooks as well.

Answer:

Almost none...now, ask the same question for the nuclear plant in NM, or the one along the banks of the Missouri River in NE that is likely to be inundated with flood water in the next few weeks.

Of course, the local problem is immense, but the significance for areas outside of Japan are negligible.

EDIT: Last time I checked, you guys are West of us...and the prevailing winds carry any stuff to the East. Long term effects outside of the immediate area in JP? Minimal. Compare it to the Pacific Island H-Bomb tests in Eniwetok...far dirtier. Yes, some people died, but the hype was bigger than the event. BTW, look at Hiroshima...there are buildings right up next to the Memorial, the epicenter of the blast. There is risk in life...deal with it.

BTW, I have also lived in Seoul...and I was far more concerned about the folks 31 miles north of us in Seoul than I was about nukes.

Lately, I was thinking of choosing the Japanese language later in life. But...?

Question:

The downfall is, I hear they have alot of earthquakes there. I like their culture, food and the language. But I'm worried I might have a good chance of experiencing it over there and possibly die :-/ How can I overcome this fear?

Answer:

Depending on where you are. When I lived in Tokyo there was hardly a week that went by that I didn't feel a very small one. Where I am now, well, 4 or 5 times in 20 years of living here, but nothing major.

Your biggest problem isn't going to be overcoming the fear, but how to manage to get a visa in order to live here in the first place. Use Y!A database to do search rather than ask, ok? The database is full of questions like that.
