Japan Summer Fashion 2011?

Question:

Does anyone know some online Japan clothing stores that I could look at? I just want to look, not buy. I'm going to Japan this summer for 2 months. I'd like to know what the summer fashions are and I figure the best way is to look at what the stores are selling.

Answer:

There are thousands of cloth stores in Japan. Most of them do not ship internationally. But if you just want to look at, there is no problem.

This is one.

What would it be like to be white in 16th century Japan?

Question:

What would be the advantages and disadvantages of being a white male in early 16th century Japan?
Remember that this is a time when they had very little contact with the western world accept a few trade routes, so the majority would have never seen a white person before.

To put it better let say that a group of Japanese sailors find a shipwrecked vessel and they find a baby with let's say blue eyes blonde hair, and one of them decide to take it in as one of there own. What would it be like for him growing up, and grown up.

I did not want to go into detail of how the baby survived the shipwreck, so no comments about that please.

All this is to help me for my book.
And let's say that this family or clan wasn't worried about raciel impurity.

Answer:

Most Japanese people at that time had never seen white people. So I must say that people were afraid of him and he would be ostracized from society.

How is Japan doing from the earthquake and tsunami?

Question:

i was wondering because my dad has a friend there and im just curios to?????

Answer:

Japan was hit hard by the disaster, but only 0.1 per cent of Japan was affected by the tsunami and the area that was affected is not a popular destination for tourists to Japan. Most tourist attractions in Japan are now open, although some may have shortened opening hours to conserve power. All international airports are operating and this even includes Sendai Airport, which was damaged by the tsunami, and the bullet trains are all running as normal.

I am hosting a Japanese exchange student this summer and Im looking for some fun stuff we could do.?

Question:

If this helps
- He is 14
- I live in Colorado
- It will be for 3 weeks in the summer
Im looking for some unique American things we could do and just everyday things to stay busy.
Also is there anything Japanese people like to "pick up" in America that they can't get back home or foods they like to eat in America.

Answer:

since he has never been to the U.S. there is not much he would not like to see and do.
Living in Colorado means you can take him to the mountains and ride horses or may be snow ski if some of the slopes are still open.
Let him look at everything and he will decide what he wants to take home to show his family.
American fast food is in Japan but you can feed him almost anything, and he will like it.
Get some brochures and let him pick what he wants to do first.

Question:

If someone goes to Japan and gets a sword or knife (something with a blade) as a souvenier in Japan how would they get it back to America? Are you allowed one on flights as long as it isn't carry-on? Or would it have to be mailed to yourself? How would that work? Thanks!

Answer:

It seems you love hassle and stress. I know these objects are not usually allowed on planes these days and like Carl said, go for cheaper stuff or buy the sword or knife online when you get back

How do I stay this in Japanese?

Question:

I want to say "Every week, I use chopsticks."
Would it be まいしゅうおはしをします? Would I use します? How would I say this?

Also, would "Every week, I eat with chopsticks" be まいしゅうおはしでたべます。I have no idea how this sentence would be.

Answer:

まいしゅうおはしをします means, "everyweek, do chopsticks" it makes no sense.

まいしゅうおはしでたべます means "everyweek, I eat with chopsticks" Which is correct, but is better if you write it like 「まいしゅう、わたしはおはしでたべます。」

BUt if you want to say "Every week, I use chopsticks" you need to write 「まいしゅう、わたしはおはしをつかいます。」

This litteray means "Every week, I use chopsticks", but it leaves you to wonder, how do you use the chopsticks? To sword battle, to drum, to play chopsticks on the piano etc. I think the other way of saying it would be better than this one.

What age do you have to be to get into clubs in Tokyo?

Question:

Clubs with and without drinking. Just wondering as my friend and I are heading to Tokyo this July, maybe go to some clubs during the night?

Answer:

I agree with a person before me.

I went clubbing in tokyo and we gave them our US IDs. one of my friends was only 18 and he still got in after they looked at his ID. So it just depends on the place too.

You are supposed to be 20 though.

Why are there green spas in Japan?

Question:

So I've been watching anime recently, and every time the is a bath scene, the water is usually green. Why is that?

Answer:

Bath salt is very popular, and commonly used in Japanese houses. One of the most popular color of bath salt is green, although there are many colors like green, pink, milky white, purple, blue,...

In anime, they don't depict clear water. Clear water is hard to depict, and it could be a problem to show naked body inside the tub. So it's common to add some color like green, or milky white.

Could i get a job in japan?

Question:

ok, i am a cabinet maker, and i'm in college doing furniture craft, but i'm going to a good college once i have finished my college, which will give me a degree which is equal to a 4 year degree, that takes care of that side of the problem, but i'd like to go to japan and be a furniture designer or maker, if i send my CV with my information to alot of furniture places in japan, and work on my japanese could i get offers for a job? obviously i will be waiting until i finish my degree to do this, but would it be worth my time to do this? i enjoy japanese furniture building techniques and am planning on working on those while at my course during my free time, that's the main reason is the fantastic timber in japan, so is it worth my time?

Answer:

Blunt honesty, don't bother. "Equal too " won't count. The degree has to be a BA / BS from an accredited college. This is what the Ministry of Foreign Affairs requires.
How well do you know metrics ? That's what they use there.
Your co-workers will be Japanese. So that means you need native level Japanese. Reading, writing and arithmetic....
Another issue is if a Japanese can do the job, they will always be hired first. With the recent tragedy in the north east, there are many more people looking for work.
Sorry, I just can't see it happening.

Do you change your name to go to live in Japan?

Question:

If you go to Japan, do Japanese call you by your western name, can they pronounce it ? or do you take a japanese nickname, and if so is there a specific way to choose one ?

Answer:

No name changes, your name just gets 'translated' with katakana. This means that your name rarely ends up sounding like it used to. This is especially true if you name ends in a consonant as all Japanese words end in vowels. Mark would end up as Ma-ku for example.

As for kanji, I've seen some weird types that find kanji to spell out/sound out their names. Such is not official though.

Which cellphone brands are most commonly used in japan?

Question:

i was wondering which current cellphone brands do people own in japan

Answer:

It used to be "Docomo" until there was iPhone and everyone around me is using iPhone which uses the system of "Softbank" in Japan, so I am guessing that's currently the most popular cellphone brand here. "Docomo" caters Blackberry but there's not as much awareness about it in Japan

Only for Japanese speakers: What do you think of this name?

Question:

This is the name I came up with for my son:

優脳

It is read as Yūnō

However because I am not sure, do you think it is a nice name? I am talking about the choice of the two kanji. When you first look at the name how do you pronounce it if you are a Japanese speaker?

Is it pronounced correctly as Yuno or something else?

Also if you believe the combination of the words "excellent" and "brain" is not good for a boy's name can you tell me other combinations of kanji which can be read as Yuno?

Thank you

Answer:

All Japanese can pronounce Yūnō.
However, it might be surprised a little to use the Kanji of brain for the name because it is very unusual.

Instead
How about the 能?
The pronunciation is the same as the brain.
This Kanji means wisdom and the technology.

Thank you

How do you think about nuclear reactor probrem in Japan?

Question:

I 'll go to England this summer, but English people maybe keep Japanese at respectful distance?
I live in Osaka in japan and have no influence,I'm afraid that rumor.

Answer:

If people who you would meet there were smart enough to realize that someone who had took a great amount of radioactive into his body and therefore came to be able to release radiation strong enough to contaminate or even kill people around him would never leave a bed in a hospital, there would be nothing to worry about.

How do you think about nuclear reactor probrem in Japan?

Question:

Answer:

It's not what I think so much, but what I worry about. I do not have the least bit of trust in the Japanese government to be transparent about the situation in Fukushima. The same feelings extend to TEPCO. Currently everything is fine. Supposedly this is pretty much going to remain so. But 250 tons of nuclear fuel being held in an leaking environment and problems with cooling? It just doesn't give me the warm fuzzies.

Question:

My wife and I have been trying to have a baby for 5 years now. We have since turned to adoption as an option. So can anyone give us any tips and sites which specialize in Japanese adoption abroad?

Answer:

Your best bet is adopting children from war zones or from poorer Asian countries

Prada, Please read this.?

Question:

You have made your intentions quite clear in your question on the China page ( now on page two )

So to be very clear.

If you try to access any private information I hold on Yahoo Q/A or indeed anything private of mine on the internet then I will come down on you like a ton of bricks. Please believe me.

I don't know who you are but the Q/A team certainly do and you will be reported as soon as the regular contributor's on this forum read your cowardly way of trying to gain information.

I speak for myself but your main adversaries and others on this forum will no doubt have their say, and I hope they do.

If you delete your question before others have read it then I will print it in full, here, on this forum in the next few days.

You are an immature despicable person and you should well know it.

Answer:

For the record, Prada sent me an email in which he complained of his posts being deleted and wanted me to click on a link, supposedly to one of this questions. I declined to do so. To answer your question though, I don't particularly care for him either and think that trying to track someone's IP is going a bit far.

NOTE: Prada has subsequently deleted his question in the China forum where he inquired about obtaining the IP address of other users. I would strongly discourage anyone from following any links associated with Prada as he obviously has serious issues to say the least. You can also join the 'Let's Block Prada' club to limit his access of information on members.

Honeymoon in Japan, Suggestion?

Question:

My fiance are getting married at the end of July then we're headed to Japan for a week for our Honeymoon (August 1st though 8th). We didnt want the typical lay on the beach honeymoon. But we do want it to be honeymoonish and not like trudging around temples and such. So what do u suggest for our perfect honeymoon? Were planning this now, we just bought the plane tickets a month ago but no hotel etc yet because we are busy with the wedding and we wnt to hear ur opinions first!

Answer:

That's kinda' tough. You don't want to go to Okinawa and lie on the beach and relax, but you don't want to sight see either. I guess just go to Osaka and see the city. But doing anything at all is going to involve some 'trudging'.

EDIT: Well, there are lots of good places for picnics. Osaka Castle, lots of shrines/temples in Kyoto, Deer Park in Nara. Of course, there is some trudging. The private viewing of a sun rise on Mt. Fuji, well, I'm not sure if they have lodging available at the half-way stations. And viewing a sunrise from the top would require a LONG hike. I think people who want to see that start hiking in the middle of the night. Much more effort there than a simple 'trudge'.

How much money should I bring to Japan?

Question:

I'm planning on going to Japan in the near future, and I'd be traveling from the UK to Japan. I wanted to know how the money 'worked' there. I've heard that eight dollars are like eight hundred yen. I wanted to know what eight pounds would be equivalent to in yen. Accommodation is sorted out, but I'm wondering about the shopping--I want to be able to do a fair amount of clothes shopping. So for example if you were to find a dress or top from a designer shop, how much would it be in yen and how much would that be in British pounds? Just a rough example would do. Thank you for your time :)

Answer:

Your question regarding British pounds and yen can easily be answered by typing in 'currency converter' into any search engine. Learning to do this not only does not have a steep learning curve but will also allow you to make multiple conversions.

Shopping? Just as where you are from, it varies. Many things here in Japan have prices comparable to the U.S. Well, used to until the exchange rate went crazy. But there are also expensive places too. So your question cannot really be answered. You can find clothing at a price that is rather comparable to that in the U.K. whether you are looking at something inexpensive or totally outrageous.

To sum up. Learn to use a currency converter and there are no rough examples other than what I just said.

Can you stil visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki from Japan?

Question:

the places were Unites states used the Nuke , or is it stil filled with Radiation ?

Answer:

Atomic bombs use significantly small amount of uranium or plutonium compared to nuclear plants.
In fact the bomb exploded above Hiroshima city only used up less 1kg out of 50 kg of the total uranium 235 mass in the bomb.
When the two atomic bombs exploded above the both cities, radioactive materials dispersed quickly.
Contamination level in the atmosphere could never reach as high as the nuclear plant explosion because wind plays a big roll in dispersing them quickly.
But the radiation released by the atomic bombs were so powerful that people living there in the vicinity of the ground zero, most of them were elderly, women and children because men were at war zones, were instantly killed.
Bottom line, Hiroshima and Nagasaki are not filled with radiation, maybe less than your hometown because somehow Japan is a country where natural radiation level is relatively low compared to other nations; America and China have relatively high levels probably because many nuclear weapons had been tested.

What is the longest blade you carry in japan that is not double edged?

Question:

What is the longest blade you carry in japan that is not double edged? Like a pocket knife.

Answer:

Even a pocket knife can be too long, I wouldn't even carry one if I were there. I do carry a pocket knife with me, but rarely have a reason to use it. There, I wouldn't even bother. You can be arrested for carrying one,and they can hold you for two weeks without even charging you if they want.

What does this means in japanese?

Question:

What does と思います means. like チビッ子の嫌いの克服と思います
and what does 克服してあげたいと思います means. What does the agetai means here

Answer:

- チビッ子の嫌いの克服と思います
I would say : チビッ子が苦手なものに対しての克服だと思います。
--> I think that's one of big challenges for kids.

- 克服してあげたいと思います to be precise;
克服させてあげたいと思います =(Xが~を)克服するのを手伝ってあげたいと思います
"あげたい" is usually used when the speaker wants to help/offer someone else (not for the speaker him/herself) So "kokufuku (= overcome)" should be done by someone else "X". Let's suppose "X" = kids
--> I'd like to help kids get over (things that they don't like/are not good at)

e.g. 困っている友人の力になってあげたいと思います。
--> I'd like to help my friend who is in trouble.
教えてあげようか?--> Shall I tell you about that?

In Japanese, are 'wo' and 'o' the Same Thing?

Question:

I'd just like to know because when listening to Japanese artists sing live(Such as the girl group Buono!) On my CD they say 'wo' and in live concert DVDs they say 'o'.

Answer:

For instance.....

The cat ate the food. Neko ga esa o tabeta. 猫が餌を食べた。
If you want to get the proper character, you have to type 'wo' for the 'o' resulting in を。

On the other hand, type in just 'o' and you get the hiragana お。

@Prada...... Your post, as usual, made you look foolish but you do a much better job at the task when you try to express your warped sense of reality in a more verbose manner. Come on, put some effort into it. You're much sillier than that simply post indicates.

Is 新宗経 and "new age" the same thing?

Question:

Answer:

Let me figure out what your question is....
You meant "新宗教 shin-shuukyou" if so, it's not "new age"
We usually say 新興宗教 shinkou-shuukyou (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_religio…
