Suggestions for beautiful Retreat houses in Japan?

Question:

Where me and my twin sister can stay for atleast 20 days; preferably in Eastern Japan. Maybe in Kanto or Tohoku region. We don't really want "Christian" retreat houses. We just want retreat houses closer to nature, far from big cities. Japanese style retreat houses would even be better.

Answer:

I don't think there is any "Japanese style retreat house" in Japan because Japanese people do not have that kind of lifestyle. Please tell us more about it. But basically, it's not available.

Addition:
OK. I didn't know shukubo.

I could find many shukubo in Japan. This is a portal site of shukubo (shukubo.com). But written in Japanese. It's difficult to find one in English.
http://syukubo.com/spot/01syukubo.html

I can see many in Kanto and Tohoku which you want. Most of them are far from cities. If you give me more conditions you want(location, where in Kanto or Tohoku?, budget, if you want Buddhism practice), I can tell you a specific place.

Addition2:
The portal site has English pages.
http://templelodging.com/

So you can choose one by yourself. That's the bottom line. But I'll give you some answers.

Location: I told you there are many. So you need to give us at least some suggestions or I can't choose any.

Budget: As far as I saw the site, the average is 10,000 yen per night. So if you have 12,000-20,000, it's more than enough.

Others: There is NO WAY that they have Christian practice at a Buddhism site. Do you have any Christian church there with Muslim practice?

Waste disposal process in Tokyo?

Question:

I've just moved to Tokyo, and I'm a little confused with the waste disposal process! I have been told to divide my trash up into 'Combustible trash' (moeru gomi), 'Non-Combustible trash' (moenai gomi) and 'Recyclable trash' (shigen gomi).

Can anyone explain which things fall into each of these categories? I understand recyclable - for example plastic bottles and newspapers etc, but I'm not sure about combustible and non-combustible!

Answer:

Something made of paper, textile and wood is basically combustible. Others like something made of metal, plastic, etc, is non-combustible.

Is Being a Virgin Considered a Negative Thing in Japan?

Question:

I notice that in certain Japanes media, whenever the topic of someone's (adult) virginity comes up, it's used as a teasing remark or as an out-and-out insult. Is that the norm, or is it exaggerated? Just curious.

Answer:

Lol, it's exaggerated. I mean, people won't normally ask you if you're still a virgin here, unless you are good friends with them!
It's not a negative thing to be a virgin, but it sure is becoming rare, even in Japan.
Some people think Japanese people are conservative, but truth is, they aren't really!

Is there age discrimination in Japan?

Question:

When concerning working in Japan, will the age be evaluated? If I'm bellow 40 in Japan, will what is relevant to the employer the working experience (and ofcourse the required education level)? Or would they rather pick someone who is younger with the same working experience?

Answer:

Well, in the West you don't put your age on your resume. In Japan you do. You also put a photo on your resume in Japan.

You're practically the same age as the other person. What kind of person would say the other gets the job just because he's 3 years younger? Think about it. Japanese aren't dumb.

It sounds like you're looking for reasons not to get the job instead of reasons why you will. How can that be productive?

Have you ever been ignored on the street by a Japanese person when asking for something?

Question:

On my first ever trip to Tokyo, I had to ask the time many times, and each time I asked a stranger on the street, I encountered no problems at all. Every person I asked answered perfectly fine.

Note: I did ask the time in Japanese every time.

This year however, when I asked one person for the time, she blatantly ignored me, and didn't even look at me at all.
I know that not every single person in Japan is for answering questions and such. I will admit that I assumed everyone would help... I know, it was a really silly assumption, but I had it.

Anyway, what I was wondering is how common a Japanese person ignoring a stranger asking for the time and such on the street is.

Have you ever been flat out ignored by a Japanese person? Is it a lot more common than I initially thought, or did I just hit a spot of bad luck?

I asked in Japanese again as I did the times before.

Thanks!

Answer:

Actually, I don't remember any experience of being ignored in Japan. I might have 1 or 2 in my life. But I don't remember now.

Basically, I don't ask anything to a stranger. I do not need to ask time because I have a watch. If I want to ask directions, I know I should go to koban (police box) in Japan.

But your case happens, anyway. There is nothing surprising.

BTW, there is no increase of "catch sales" in the last few years. That kind of sales have been around in Japan since long ago.

How do I tell tortoise shell kanzashi from plastic look a likes?

Question:

Is it not usually darker in appearance and less uniform?

Answer:

Yes, fake tortoise shell tends to be more yellow, and more evenly yellow all over, than real tortoise shell. That said, I have been told that while some new tortoise shell pieces are being manufactured in Japan, they are from shells that had been stockpiled before the ban on killing turtles for their shells was put in place. I have no idea if that is true or not but if you're concerned you might want to look into it.

Japan: Fukashima update?

Question:

How is the Nuclear power plant?

Answer:

There's been little progress in stabilizing Fukushima Plant. It's been more than 6 months since the earthquake day. But it will take another 6 months or more. No one knows now.

There is already much bad effect on Japan although it's true that there is no death so far.

But its radiation is effecting large portion of land in Japan. Areas 20km radius of plant will be uninhabitable for decades. And there is much negative effect on crops in Japan.

In the last 2 months or so, radiation was found in beefs produced in Japan. So beef industry is severely damaged.

Sorry, girls, but there are some ugly foreign women in Japan. I took a trip into Osaka tonight and saw 3 foreign women. They were ALL ugly.

Do Japanese girls have many friends in general?

Question:

I know that it is extremely normal for Chinese people to have many close frinends, such as 20, and then they have another 80 so so friends. But what about Japanese? Do they usually keep to 3 or 5?

By the way: Is this Japanese person a girl or boy??

http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=N1cLxm3gOQk

Is this normal attitude??

Answer:

I think it's a girl, but she has a deep voice, doesn't she? I can't understand everything she's saying, but I can understand why many girls would want to rebel against the image of cuteness that the mass-media foists upon Japanese women. This girl is kind of a hard-a** -- I bet she has lots of fans.

Quite often in late March to April - there is no guaranteed time - it's when Mother Nature decides, and nobody else can convince her otherwise.

What is a good Zoo in Tokyo Area????

Question:

I LOVE zoo's, especially the monkeys/gorillas.

So please tell me of a zoo you know of/or have been to, I know there are a few but I would love to know what's best.

Answer:

Definitely, the Tama Zoo (west suburb of Tokyo) is the best.
But it is a huge park with many ups and downs (not so steep, though). You need to walk around a few hours to see all the animals in the park.
It's easy to get there. Take the Keio Line from Shinjuku to Takahata Fudo station (less than 30 minutes by express train), and transfer to a mono rail to Tama Zoo (takes less than 10 minutes).

How fast are the winds at the top of the skyscrapers in Tokyo?

Question:

Answer:

At 50th floor, the wind speed may be about twice faster than ground level.
So when the wind speed is 10m/s = 36km/h, just a little strong flow at ground means
20m/s =72km/h, strong blow at the top of those buildings.
