What is at the very top of Japan and the very bottom areas???????????

I am flying in to Tokyo for 3 weeks in November, I am planning to stay in Tokyo for the first two weeks and am curious to go to either the top of Japan or the bottom, BUT WHAT'S THERE?what's it like.
I am thinking rather the bottom so I can go to Kyoto.

the bottom of Japan is the bottom of Japan Sea.

the northern most part of Japan is the northern most peninsula of Hokkaido.
the southern most part of Japan is the southern most island of Okinawa prefecture.
