Losing weight for japan?

Question:

Hey, I am going to college in about 2 years in japan. I want to lose weight here in the u.s. this year and try to maintain it next year. I was think of getting to 120 lbs.

I need to know how much weight I need to lose so I don't stick out, and hopefully get a love interest while I'm there. Yes, looks aren't everything, but that's the first thing they see when they first meet you.

I am 5'3 and 145 lbs. I have an hourglass shape. My measurements are 37-27-37.

So once again...

-How much weight should I lose?

-What will be my measurements after my loss?

Thank you!

Answer:

You will stick out no matter what you weigh as you're not Japanese.
I'm sure many Japanese men would love to meet a woman who was 37-27-37 ! They might even be fighting over you.

Do Japanese teens know a lot of Western Culture; do they watch our shows, listen to our music etc.?

Question:

LOL bit curious as to how much they know about us. I

Answer:

It's all relative. Maybe to someone they know a lot, maybe to others, they don't.

Not so much teens, but for adults, there are always people who are some sort of otaku (nerd). That includes being an otaku about any aspect of Western culture. Chances are there's someone in Japan who knows more about some particular aspect of Western culture than you do (a particular band, actor, TV show, etc.)

Some popular songs in the West are popular in Japan too. It's interesting because sometimes bands that aren't so popular in the West will sometimes be a bit out of proportionally popular in Japan. Ever heard of Mr. Big? They're a U.S. rock band. I never heard of them until I went to Japan, where they were quite popular.

Most of the big American movies are popular in Japan too. With both music and movies though, most of it is Japanese. I would say that less than half of the popular stuff is from the West.

Some foreign TV shows become popular in Japan, but again, just a fraction of what people watch.

Japanese learn a heck of a lot more about the West than Westerners learn about Japan or Asia in general. You'd be surprised how ignorant Westerners are about Asia in general until they actually spend some time there. A lot of people have some pretty backward ideas.

Why is the stuff in Japan so expensive in general?

Question:

Is their currency less put out to the public than in the u.s? Is it because they have a higher demand on their products and jobs aren't paid well there? I swear, the weirdest **** is created in that tiny little country. And still they managed to drown themselves. I need answers!! :) thanks.

Answer:

Natural resources are scarce in Japan, which means importing said resources. No getting around the need for oil, or minerals or lots of things used in the manufacturing process. Having to import something means increased costs.

With housing, land is at a premium. Everybody wants/needs some but there isn't a lot of it. So it's expensive.

The exchange rate thing has already been explained to you.

On a related topic, I swear, the weirdest ****ing questions seem to come from people living outside of Japan.

Some people need answers, some need help and then there are those poor souls who need both.

Is the emo style very popular in japan.?

Question:

please dont get offended i mean like is the fashion very hyped over there jw im not emo its just i heard emo was big down there but i doubt it please dont call me stupid

Answer:

Most Japanese have never heard of "Emo." Being depressed isn't seen as a positive thing in Japan. When you're at school, you wear a uniform, you try to have a cheerful attitude, and do your best. Of course there are kids that will never really fit in with everyone else too.

Japanese teen styles come out on the weekend when they can wear their own clothes. Just like anywhere else, there is a lot of individual style, not necessarily associated with a particular subculture. There are lots of kids with dyed hair, but it's usually an orangey brown colour.

There are kids that wear make-up and black, but it's more toward the Gothic Lolita or Visual Kei styles.

If you're really interested in teen subculture fashion, then head to Harajuku in Tokyo. That's where they all buy their clothes and show off.

One main difference between the fashion sense in Japanese kids and Western kids is that in Japan, no matter your look, you do it cleanly and precisely. So, even back in the 90's, if a Japanese teen wanted to pull off the grunge look, they could, but they'd still be taking their nightly hot bath, their plaid shirt would be fresh out of the laundry, their jeans would be pre-ripped instead of naturally worn through wearing the same pair every day for a year, etc. You might get a guy that looks like Kurt Cobain, but you'll never get a Kurt Cobain out of Japan.

Recovery in Japan post-tsunami?

Question:

Does anyone know how the recovery in Japan is going? We heard so much about it in the week after the disaster, but now I feel like there is nothing being said. I'd like to know how the country is doing, what it looks like now, how the people are feeling....all the little bits of the recovery. Any one know where I can get that information? I wish there was one website that was a chronicle of it all...
Thanks!

Answer:

Check this site. There will be news on this net.

Kimono han-juban replacement?

Question:

I just bought a gorgeous evening kimono but it didn't come with the han-juban. I didn't even know I needed one until today! Are there any alternatives to using a han-juban to protect the silk from sweat and other things? Like a normal house robe or something?

Answer:

I usually fake mine with a t-shirt if I have to. As long as you have a proper juban (yes, you need a juban/nagajuban too) and some kind of wrap-around skirt for your bottom half, you shouldn't have a problem. If you do substitute a t-shrit, make sure it is light-weight, won't be too bulky under the kimono, and has a low enough neck line that the neck won't show once you have the juban and kimono on properly.

Who would my roommates be in a hostel in Tokyo?

Question:

Suppose I checked in to http://www.hostels.com/hostels/tokyo/ann… (a random $35/night hostel in Tokyo). In a 3-bed mixed dorm, who would my roommates be likely to be?
- European tourists?
- Asian immigrant workers?
- Asian tourists?
- ???

Answer:

I agree. I stayed in a hostel for a month while I was waiting for my apartment to be ready when I spent a year in Nagoya. Most of the people were Western Tourists from Australia or Europe or NA. There were some Japanese too. I remember one guy was staying there because he got in a fight with his wife and she was mad at him so he was running away for a few days. XD

What is the simplest Japanese newspaper for foreigners?

Question:

I want to introduce the students in my Japanese class to newspaper articles. Which newspaper do you think is easiest for a foreigner to read?

Answer:

Japanese newspapers are said to be hard to read as you know, using a lot of kanji, with too sophisticated expressions/technical terms, which even adults find hard to read sometimes...
So what about kid's newspaper?

Can I have a pet mouse in Japan?

Question:

I plan on moving to Japan to teach English for 2 years once I graduate college, but I've heard they don't allow pets in most apartments over there. I've read, though, that this usually only applies to big pets like cats and dogs and that lots of people keep turtles and hamsters. So I was wondering if there's any way I'd be allowed to keep mice? And if so, is there any way to bring one from the US to Japan?

Answer:

I don't think most would allow you to have mice as pets. So if you want to do it, do it clandestinely. But at your own risk.

I'm half japanese and puerto rican. and i really love japan, but i want to know is it good to live there?

Question:

ok so if i moved into japan will that be the best thing to do, or should i stay in american. what do i have to do to live there.

Answer:

The only reason to move to Japan is the increased sense of safety. Everything else just a small plus here and there.

If you want to move here, I hope your parents registered your birth and you have a Japanese passport. Otherwise it is visa time for you.

EDIT: It's true about the dual nationality. What wasn't pointed out is that they don't do door to door searches looking for you. Kinda' like the police, unless you rub their faces in it, they are content to sit back and do basically nothing. Not saying anything was the advice I got from the U.S. Embassy when I registered my daughter's birth and was asking them about dual citizenship. You don't say anything, they aren't likely to find out. Just travel on your Japanese passport and keep your U.S. citizenship a secret.

Somebody on this forum recommends leaving on the Japanese passport, entering the U.S. on the American passport and reversing the process coming back. Personally, I think that is rubbing their faces in it. You have an exit stamp in your Japanese passport but there isn't a stamp from any country that you entered? Hmmm..... let's all suck copious quantities of air through our teeth and start asking lots of questions.
