Kimono han-juban replacement?

Question:

I just bought a gorgeous evening kimono but it didn't come with the han-juban. I didn't even know I needed one until today! Are there any alternatives to using a han-juban to protect the silk from sweat and other things? Like a normal house robe or something?

Answer:

I usually fake mine with a t-shirt if I have to. As long as you have a proper juban (yes, you need a juban/nagajuban too) and some kind of wrap-around skirt for your bottom half, you shouldn't have a problem. If you do substitute a t-shrit, make sure it is light-weight, won't be too bulky under the kimono, and has a low enough neck line that the neck won't show once you have the juban and kimono on properly.
