How hard is it to become an engineer or a career in the sciences in Japan?

Question:

Answer:

It is not hard to start a career in these fields in Japan, but a native level in Japanese is absolutely necessary. Also, you must have a certain skill or specialization that the Japanese do not have in order for companies to hire you, apply a work visa for you and bring you over to Japan.

I don't understand what the Yakuza is?

Question:

I just read they are helping the victims of earthquake.
Don't get me wrong, I think that is great, but won't the government be arresting them or taking some action against them?

in old days, Yakuza's roles was resolve "cannot resolve in law" problems.

those Yakuza's spirit called " 仁義" (JINGI)
but they ware evil / criminals for bakufu (government)

nowadays, Yakuza is almost Zainichi Korean.
they are just mafia.
but minority traditional true Japanese yakuzas still had Jingi.
I believe so.

What happens if the radiation from Japan reaches the United States?

Question:

Answer:

Why do Americans worry so much about radiations from Japan after dropping 2 nuclear bombs on Japan and repeated all sorts of nuclear experiments in the desert of Nevada from 1951 to 1992? All the nuclear test sites are still designated as restricted areas that are far more dangerous.

Question:

Do they actually employ people, as in they work certain hours and get paid, or are the people there just worshipping and demand no pay?

I am going to japan this summer and want to make friends?

Question:

I am going to jaoan this summer and would like to start making some friends so i can have some one to see and so i can pratice speaking japanese. Does any one know a chat web sight where i can meet people from japan ?

Answer:

Try going to:

http://www.japan-guide.com/local/?aCAT=2

and narrow your search to an area you're going to. You can get in touch with a lot of people who'd
be interested. Of course they may be more interested in practicing speaking English. But you'll sort it all out.

What would you like to ask?Does this make sense please correct me?

Question:

先週 月曜び は 七時半 車 で としょかん に 行けました。

I was aiming to say i went to a library last week monday at 7:30.............

But i think i got mixed up instead should it be like this

ともだち の おかあさん と

If i added that my mother went with me please help

Answer:

>i went to a library last week monday at 7:30.............

This does not say "by car" although your Japanese sentence is trying to say it.

Well, the correct one is,
先週の月曜、7時半に車で図書館に行きました。

>If i added that my mother went with me please help

ともだちのおかあさん means mother of your friend.

It should be 母と

Addition:
>so if i wanted it to be i went to the library last week on monday by car what would it be?

I included "by car" in my 1st answer.

>and for the mother thing if i got rid of friend and の could it make sense to go with my mother

What do you mean by get rid of friend and の? It's confusing because you talk about getting rid of English and Japanese at the same time.

TOYS FOR HOPE - Tsunami Relief Charity for Kids?

Question:

Although this is not a question, I thought I would post it to see if anyone would be interested.

As you all know, the March 11th, 2011 Tsunami devastated the lives of thousands of people living in the Tohoku region of Japan. Countless of these victims were children who lost friends, classmates, their houses and members of their families. It is something that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives and for ones so young, it's hard to imagine their grief. At the time the Tsunami struck, many children were just getting ready to leave school. It was Friday, and they were ready to have a fun weekend days before the end of school. Many were probably thinking they would play their Wii, Playstation, Xbox or DS as soon as they got home. Many probably wanted to go to the park to play baseball or soccer, or play with their dolls with their friends. But the Tsunami took all of this away.
Now they have nothing.

I have always enjoyed reading the questions people post on Yahoo! Answers in the Japan forum. I like reading answers by our top contributors, Samson, TheCheapest, Aya, Carl and even Area52. I know that these people are just a small number of the people whose heart goes out to those who lost everything.
Now, I am just another poster who is just the same as everyone else here. I worry so much about these people in Tohoko and I want to do what I can to bring at least one smile back to a life that was devastated.

I am just one woman but I wanted to do something...

So, I am starting a charity and if anyone out there wants to support it, you are welcome. It is called TOYS FOR HOPE and is built around gathering toys and donations for toy purchases for the children in the prefectures affected by the Tsunami.
At the moment, all I have is a facebook group. But please join to support its cause. I have listed an address accepting toys that will be delivered to children at various shelters in Tohoku.

TOYS FOR HOPE

Thanks for your time. Together we can make a difference in kids lives.
~Yume Ryuu

Answer:

Yume, you are very sweet and very well meaning. I have just one question for you ...

How are they going to play with these things with the very limited electricity up in Sendai, Miyagi and Aomori? From what I understand, most of the evacuation centers have very limited back up generators, and only a few hours a day of electricity. Plus there are thousands of children who are staying in evacuation centers, and many of these centers don't have a TV. Where they do, people are watching for Earthquake information or information about further tsunamis.

I would send a message to toys r us Japan or something, and try to get them to donate alongside your charity. Maybe things like puzzles or jigsaws are better than X-Boxes etc. Also cheaper, and easier to get companies to donate. However at the moment I dont think kids NEED these games. They need food, nappies ... or water :(

I hate to be so negative. BUT I think you need to think this through a little further. BUT I will join your charity on facebook :D

Are Japanese people more resistant to radiation?

Question:

After Hiroshima and Nagasaki, should not the Japanese have built up some resistance to nuclear radiation? Not least those who lived closest to the bombed cities, but still survived. If so, maybe it was even blessing in disguise that it was Japan that was hit by a nuclear accident.
Only a theory that appeared in my head. What do you think?

Answer:

Now I do not know if there are different kinds of radiation, but that sounds pretty reasonable, however, so I still believe that there is convergence as it is from an atomic bomb.

What was the construction of peasant homes in feudal Japan like?

Question:

I want to know a lot about them for a story I'm writing. Did homes have multiple rooms or was the home just one large room? Did they have a front door or no? What were peasant homes made of?

Answer:

Huts made of straw or brush or mud. The lucky ones were made into sex slaves by the ruling classes and got to live inside. A lot like the world today.

What were the food and drinks like in japan around about 13,000 BCE?

Question:

Answer:

Only the Ainu were there as far as human population goes. They were hunter-gatherers, so ate whatever they could kill, catch or pick.

The people considered "Japanese" today are the descendants of murdering invaders who stole the islands from the rightful owners.

Would this be a good name to use for a fundraiser group/charity to help Japan?

Question:

So I'm planning on making a group that collects money to help Japan survivors. I saw this quote online that was said by a famous Japanese peace Activist and Buddhist Leader. He said, "With love and patience, nothing is impossible." I thought this would be an appropriate quote to use to start my group. I also needed a name, and I thought I could create a name that was similar to that quote. I was thinking about something along the lines, "Love.Patience.Japan." or should I pick something else. I want something short and can tell others about my group through the name. Can you give me some ideas?

Answer:

I think Love is good. But Patience is not necessary for a charity group.

Did you know Allah caused the tsunami in Japan?

Question:

According to this excerpt:
"..the banned al-Muhajiroun proclaiming that the call for "Islam, the Shariah and jihad from Libya" had "shaken the enemies of Islam and the Muslims more than the tsunami that Allah sent against their friends, the Japanese."

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/africaandindianocean/libya/8407047/Libyan-rebel-commander-admits-his-fighters-have-al-Qaeda-links.html

I really hope this isn't a joke.

Answer:

There is no logical inconsistency so bizarre that a complete nutcase cant make it logical in his religious views. In this way fundamentalists of Islam and Christianity are brothers.

Can anyone explain how the radiation leak in japan relates to nuclear chemistry?

Question:

can anyone explain how japans radiation leak relates to chemistry/nuclear chemistry?

Answer:

When the nuclear fuel is exposed to air it overheats and creates hydrogen. If the hydrogen isn't vented it builds up pressure and cracks the containment vessel. Hydrogen is highly chemically reactive, so when it comes in contact with air (oxygen) it rapidly combusts (aka explodes) and the explosion will spread the nuclear fuel all over. That is what happened in Chernobyl. In Fukushima, the better reactor design vented the hydrogen outside the containment vessel and only damaged the plants' outer shells, leaving the nuclear fuel inside the containment vessel.

Should I not order items from Japan now?

Question:

I am a part-time jewelry maker, and I get a lot of my supplies from Japan. The person I purchase from swears that I have nothing to be concerned about in regards to radiation, but I am still so nervous. Do I have reason to be concerned? Would the post office be able to detect radiation in my package? Please help! I am feeling a little paranoid.

Answer:

If your supplies go through normal post you don't have to worry about it. Postal services wouldn't let hazardous radioactive material go through.

Is Black face in Japan offensive?

Question:

I've been on the internet and I've read and watched videos about black face in Japan. I find it pretty cool that they are fascinated with hip-hop and black culture but I personally think the black face is a little too much and its offensive. But I've also seen videos where people were debating on whether or not its offensive or not, especially black people, and a lot of people justified that its because they are a homogenous country and they don't have regular interaction with African-Americans like people in the Americas and some European countries. I'm not trolling or anything I just think this is a good topic of discussion and that it can give some food for thought about racism in different countries. So what do you guys think

Answer:

There's a very very very few population of African descent here. So when someone (Japanese) does a black face, it's not intended to offend a certain race or culture. Many Japanese are not even aware black face could be offensive. I haven't even heard of it until few years ago where a pokemon named "Jynx" was accused of racism by the Americans because it has a black face. I don't even think, the creators of that pokemon intend to insult the African Americans.
Also, by the early 2000s, ganguro a certain fashion trend was very famous. It's where Japanese ladies have their skins tan or very dark, and bleached blonde their hair. Then apply dark foundations on their face. You can google it.

How long will it take for Japan to recover?

How is Japan allowing ?

Question:

the company that is responsible for the nuclear plants dictate to the country and the government how i high to jump and run..this isnt American where BP allowed who they wanted in the gulf of Mexicoo for the first 3 weeks of the spill..

Answer:

You can't compare the two. The Gulf oil spill happened under normal conditions and what seems like bureaucratic bungling occurred.

The forty year old Fukushima plants were hit with an earthquake five times the strength they were designed for and yet they still shut down safely. The generators came on like they were supposed to when grid power was cut. Then the tsunami hit and the generators were wiped out. However, the battery backup still worked for the designed eight hours. The problem happened when no new generators could be put in. Even so the problems have been minimal--media scare mongering for ratings not withstanding.

How do you say ironically and ironic in Japanese?

Question:

For ex:
Ironically, the kanji for kirei is not so pretty (just in my opinion).
That was supposed to be ironic.

How would you translate the above sentences?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:

"ironically" can be translated to "皮肉なことに hiniku na kotoni/ 皮肉にも hiniku nimo"
But since it's your personal opinion, I don't think "ironically" fits the sentense...
I'd rather edit your sentense as follows.

"綺麗 toiu kanji wa watashini totte kirei "beautiful (different from "pretty") " to iu inshou o ataenai. mushiro "ugly" to iu kanji ga suru."
(The kanji 綺麗 doesn't give me an impression of "beauty". It even looks "ugly" to me)
*... to iu kanji ga suru --> have a feeling of /that

--------- OK, let me give you an example;
"watashi wa tofu ga daisuki deshita, GF ga sono kanji no imi o oshiete kureru-made wa....
'kusatta mame'? ima wa mou suki dewa arimasen. hiniku-na koto.. iie 'higeki' desu."
(I used to like tofu really much until my Japanese GF told me what the kanji 豆腐 literally meant. 'rotten beans'? Thanks a lot! )
That's irony.... or tragedy

Does any know a good learning software for Japanese?

Question:

I'm planning visiting Japan in a couple of years I want to know how to write and speak the language can any help me please. And if you have tried one software and it work please tell me, if its free I would appreciate and if it's not still tell me that is costs money.

Answer:

The best way to learn Japanese is through a variety of methods. You need to work on your grammar, listening, speaking, reading and writing. Its best to think of these as separate categories and focus on each specific category as these require different methods and techniques.

Start by learning the basics through grammar. These books really helped me:

• Shin Nihongo no Kiso I & II

• Shin Nihongo no Kiso Japanese Kanji Workbook

• A Course in Modern Japanese by The University of Nagoya Press

• An Introduction to Modern Japanese by Osamu Mizutani & Nobuko Mizutani

How did the japan tsunami affect the fukushima power plant?

Question:

Answer:

Your question is very broad, and difficult to answer without more specificity, however I will attempt to address some main points and hope that I answer the ones that are of interest to you.

This events that affected the power plant are two-fold, first earthquake damage and then tsunami damage. While information continually changes, these two events caused sufficient damage (at magnitude 9.0, it would be shocking if they didn't cause damage) to affect both primary safety systems and multiple redundant backup safety systems, such as diesel generators, battery reserves, and containment, structure, and cooling systems.

Let it be known, that none of these reactors failed in their emergency response during the first hours to first day (approx.). All 3 units that were online successfully carried out a SCRAM, thus shutting down the nuclear chain reaction. These reactors are designed to carry out a SCRAM both under manual command and by automatic trips. Furthermore a SCRAM is to take between 4 and 18 seconds, depending on the model and specific conditions. BWR reactors have control rods that insert from the bottom, rather than the top so there is no gravity drop, but other safety considerations have been made making up for this.

The cooling systems which are normally not needed as cooling is being achieved by the mechanism responsible for converting heat into steam which is used in to drive a turbo-generator. In an emergency however, the reactor has been shutdown, but the fuel remains very hot, and will increase in temperature if not actively cooled, due mostly to decay products generating heat as a byproduct. The cooling systems, 2 high pressure (High Pressure Coolant Injection System & the Automatic Depressurization System) work when the reactor is still at high pressure (for that reactor model) and 2 low pressure (Low Pressure Coolant Injection System & Core Spray System) work when the pressure is below a certain set point. It is important to note that immediately after a SCRAM, that the first cooling system to activate would be the HPCI, which requires no power to run, but it has limited volume and can only replace a certain amount of the cores operating volume. Recirculation pumps are expected to be working either in primary or auxiliary mode, and feedwater is assumed to available.

Again the devastation was so severe that what happened was a disconnect from the loop that allows for coolant water to be cooled (these reactors, due to size use a unique ocean heatsink, as opposed to the concave towers we are accustomed to in the U.S.), subsequently this caused a LOHS, or Loss Of Heat Sink. Even if power had been restored, there was no immediate way to restore the damaged loops and regain a path for the thermal energy dissipation.

The spent fuel pool, depending on how long since fuel had been placed in it, would take a considerable amount of time to drive of it's store of water, but it like a core, must be actively cooled. This was not happening for the same reasons previously described.

As a staying measure, extremely corrosive seawater was used to cool the core(s) and perhaps the spent fuel pool as well. These reactors will NEVER run again as the chemistry of seawater (a highly mineralized solution) reacting with essentially all the parts of the reactor render it unusable. Furthermore, while it may have seemed like a good idea, it actually speeds up the rate at which any undamaged fuel cladding is degraded. Make no mistake, a partial meltdown had already occurred, but using this type of water is damaging fittings, welds, valves, and most importantly, cladding that contains the fuel elements.

This water is now, as expected saturated with dissolved fission products, activation products, and will require treatment to remove the radionuclides. This is extremely expensive! An option is to hold the water for decay (1 year is more than sufficient) and then release the water far enough from populated areas in a very slow rate, establishing a progressive dilution. The more radioactive an isotope is, the shorter it's half-life, thus, holding for a 1 year will assure the most dangerous products have gone through many half-lives, and that the remaining products can be more easily disposed of or at least more easily handled.

That is the situation so far. Again, I hope I have addressed most of the key points.

Why is it expensive to live in Japan?

Question:

If the country is experiencing deflation and long-term economic decline, then shouldn't it be cheaper to stay/live there? Specifically as a foreigner.

I don't have much of an understanding of economics so bear with me if this is a stupid question :p

Answer:

The rent is too high. That is because land remains rated too high despite the fact that depreciation should also be applied to the value of land, seeing as the economy is doing this bad. That's all for the protection of banks, which possess lots of land as collateral.

Why are they not using liquid nitrogen to cool nuclear reactor in Japan?

Question:

Not only would it help cool the rod, it would stop the reactions. So what have they been drinking to not think of this?

Answer:

And exactly how would you get liquid nitrogen to the reactor core???

Cheapest ONEWAY flight to Japan get +10points?

Question:

こんばんわ!

Alright. I'm looking for a one way ticket to Japan. I know there has been a lot of havoc going on there, but I've been planning this for over three years. A lot of my friends there are either in hospitals or I haven't heard from them, but I want to go help out any way possible. No advice please.

I am looking for a ticket lower than $780 considering it is a one way ticket, and I have seen prices that cheap. If you can find something cheaper than I have found please let me know.

Anyone who can find the cheapest ticket I will select for best answers+10points.
Thank you very much for everyone who puts in the effort so that I can go to help my friends.

ありがとうございます!(=゜ω゜)

Answer:

Honored though we are by your belief that we can read your mind and tell where you are flying from, it would be a big help if you gave us a hint. LAX? SFO? NYC? Somewhere else?

From Dallas, I don't see anything cheaper than $784. There's some $595 fares on Air China from LAX, and you can fly from DFW to LAX for $109 on Virgin America, so that'd be $604 if you make your own connection.

What are the predictions for Japan's progress over the next 12 months?

Question:

My university's art department might cancel our trip to Japan in March 2012 because of the recent events. So my question is, what are some sources for predictions regarding Japan's recovery between now and next March regarding economy, reconstruction and the radiation in Tokyo? Please only reputable sources and nothing about the end of the world, okay? Thanks!

Answer:

It's too early to talk about March 2012. Thing might change so much. You have to wait at least until the nuke issue will be settled down.

What does nama te masu ka mean?

Question:

it's in japanese what does it mean

Answer:

Are you sure you heard correctly? That has no meaning.

Can you provide the actual Japanese?

"namate" is not a word and impossible to get by proper verb conjugation. It -could- be "namatte" however:

訛っていますか。 (namatteimasu ka):
"Do I/you/they speak with an accent?"
etc.

"nama" can also mean "raw" (fish, etc.) or "without a condom" (referring to sex), but I don't believe that's what this is referring to.

Context would be nice, but hopefully this helps.

Can anyone tell me a brief summary about the radiation leak going on in Japan?

Question:

Answer:

Earthquake occurred right offshore of Sendai, Japan (northeast japan)

The earthquake caused a tsunami which took the power offline from the nuclear cooling systems.

The reactors overheated and exploded a little bit.

Japanese emergency crews and nuclear engineers have been attempting to cool down the reactors with seawater until they get the power running to the cooling systems again.

Some of the nuclear fuel has been exposed to the outside air causing a leak of radiation.

It could take weeks or even months before the leak can be fully suppressed.

I 'm planning to go to Tokyo next week. Is it safe to go there? my concern is radioactivity radiations.?

Question:

Answer:

Not a good idea to go there right now. There are still rolling blackouts. There are shortages of food items like milk and bread. Also things like frozen foods are in short supply.
There's more to be concerned about other than radioactivity.
EDIT : well over 150,000 people have left Japan since the earthquake !

Does www.amazon.co.jp ship to India? If yes, how can I enter my details as it doesn't have foreign countries?

Question:

...options...
(One Japanese person once told me that it does ship but I can't work out how)

Answer:

thecheapest is right. You need to check in the shipping section on the item page to make sure it doesn't say "We're sorry; this item can not be shipped outside Japan" or "この商品は、日本国外にお届けすることができません。" Most DVDs, games and consoles will not ship outside Japan, nor will marketplace items. The only thing I've seen as yet that they will ship is books- including manga. If you are ordering, order a lot at a time because postage through them is very expensive. If theres an item you desperately want, but they won't ship it to India for you, you can probably use a mail forwarding service like http://www.dankedanke.com/en/

Can you buy a Japanese kimono (party) for 65.000 yen?

Question:

Answer:

FRANKLY~~I THINK U COULD....
However, I'm no authority on this...unless, I get to talk to my Jap. GF....:)
Mind U...I remember her telling me that that 2nd-hand ones are already good !!!

Try looking at this site & see the Chinese-made Kimonos....
http://asianideas.com/kimonorobes.html

Meanwhile....READ (below) & CHECK IT OUT ~~~

There are lots & lots of places to buy nice, second-hand kimono,
(both in Japan and on the internet.....)
In Japan, if you're going to be in Nagoya, head out to the Uso Kannon shrine.
I tell U....There's a rather long street nearby that's nothing but second-hand clothing, including....
2nd-hand kimono & kimono accessories.

IF...In Kyoto, there's a little shop called Mimuro that sells brand-new kimono.
Those are a lot more expensive than second-hand, but my GF was able to get a full furisode set there
for $700 when they had a big sale during summer.
They would be worth a look, especially if there's a Sale on ~~~

They also say there's some good things at Chicago Harajuku, which is a second-hand clothing shop
on Teramachi Dori if I'm not mistaken.
My friend said that the entire second floor was KIMONOS !!!
But I haven't been there myself so I can't vouch for it myself.
There were two places in Sendai as well, but I can't say for it NOW (due to the Earthquake/Tsunami) However, U can always stop by the Tourist help offices in the cities you visit and ask where to buy kimono, they should be able to direct U to good places.
During the summer, most Japanese department stores sell yukata, and some of the larger ones sell
other kinds of kimono too, but since those are brand-new they're going to be very expensive.

CHECK THESE OUT ON THE NET:
(Hopefully, I'm helpful enough....U only owe me a coffee.....LOL....

http://www.net-shinei.co.jp/antique_ryuj…
http://www.japanese-antiques.jp/shop/ind…
http://www.i-kimono.com/english/index.ht…

And of course, don't forget to check eBay.
Just be careful to make sure you're not buying some cheap FAKE kimono if you want the real deal.
Try using search terms like "furisode," "houmongi," "tsukesage," "iromuji," "tomesode," and "komon" since those will bring up lots of reputable sellers
(Most of the links given above sell on eBay as well as on their own sites)
And....fewer fake kimono than just searching >>>> "kimono."
