Do they actually employ people, as in they work certain hours and get paid, or are the people there just worshipping and demand no pay?

Answer:
I believe those that work for maintenance are hired and paid by the governments or private sectors who own the temple. Miko (shrine maiden), I'm not sure if they're paid. But I think they are.
