How can I help Japan?

Question:

I would really like to help Japan, but my parents are very skeptical about where the money is actually going. I wanted to do a bake sale at the neighborhood garage sale we're going to have, but they said to choose a cause closer to home. I don't know what to do, but I truly want to help the Japanese people. I'm 15, and I can't drive, go anywhere, etc.

Any suggestions?

Answer:

Check the newspaper and see if there are any fundraising events happening nearby! Perhaps you can volunteer at the event and help out!
You won't donate directly, but you would be showing that you want to support Japan!

If you have some money, go around several shops and see if any of them have donation boxes?

If convicted of domestic battery can i still go to japan?

Question:

my friends suppose to go back to japan but was convicted of domestic battery and heard
that he cant go back to japan because of this
anyone know?

Answer:

depends on the type of visa he has or wants to obtain

For a tourist visa, there is no way for the immigration officer to know that your friend has a criminal record so most likely he will be allowed in

For a work/resident visa, I believe you are asked to state on the application whether you have had any criminal convictions in the past - if he was to neglect mentioning his conviction, I am not sure how the Japanese authorities will verify this information

So, in short - your friend should be ok to enter Japan

PS. in the title of your question you refer to the convicted domestic battery person as yourself and yet in the main question you refer to a friend...

Would Japanese men like a black stripper?

Question:

I want to move to Japan and become a famous black stripper who is payed lots of money to travel across Japan to pole dance and get naked for the men.. or women. It's all good.

I'm very comfortable with my sexuality.

Answer:

Hey, it's possible... Can't be many of them in Japan. But finding someone to hire you will be a problem. You need a work visa to work in Japan. You could get a entertainer visa if you can find someone to hire you. Won't be easy though. You'll have to find an agency that sends dancers over seas.

Is it safe to work in Tokyo, Japan now?

Question:

I heard from news that Japan is badly hit with tsunami, earthquake and nuclear meltdown. I got a job offer recently to work in Tokyo, Japan.

Answer:

Sure, it's safe. Tokyo is more than 150 miles away from the nuke.

Addition:
>but isn't that true the nuclear debris can be brought by wind to Tokyo as well?

Not true. Even if they are brought, it's harmless amount.

>With all the recent news saying that the food and water in Japan is also contaminated by radiation.

Contaminated food and water is ones from areas around the nuke.

What are some of the things that happened when the radiation leaked in Japan?

Question:

Answer:

On August 29 at 6 p.m., the Nuclear Industrial Safety Agency (NISA) announced
at a press conference that TEPCO had falsified
voluntary inspection reports and concealed it
for many years. TEPCO admitted the stated
facts at the press conference later in the same
day. According to the agency, TEPCO has
falsified the inspection records and attempted
to hide cracks in reactor vessel shrouds in 13
units of the 17 nuclear power plants owned by
TEPCO, including Fukushima I (6 reactors),
Fukushima II (4 reactors), and Kashiwazaki-
Kariwa (7 reactors). However, the agency
maintained that there should be no problem
regarding the safety of the nuclear power
plants. Ironically, the safety assessment by the
agency was based on TEPCO’s calculation.

What are Japanese People like?

Question:

I love anime, so I wouldn't mind learning the language and maybe going to japan one day (5 years away at least).

But what are the people like?
Since Im going to sound a little racist and group all asian people into the same boat, but of what I've met of asian people in high school and at course they seem quite stuck up themselves and looked down on us white guys was the feeling I got in high school, But I think they were korean.

So tell me what are the people like?
Would they be rude to me if I ever took a holiday there and could just talk a bit of Japanese?
Are they nice to foreigners?

Or whats something from a foreigner's point of view of the people, like I've heard the french aren't very nice people to those who can't speak their language.

Are they racist?
Like one of my friends recently got beaten up by 20people in amsterdam and he said the only thing he did wrong was speaking english and he said he wasn't american or english he was from new zealand and he could speak the language no problem either, yet they still kept going him.
Btw he lived there so he was fluent in the language

Answer:

Japanese people in general are very polite and respectful. They treat you very well, and are very hospitable as well. I wouldn't think that they would be mean to you because your a foreigner, or because you can only speak English. From my past experience at airports and on the street, they will try very hard to understand what you are trying to say and help you, or find someone else who can. Japanese people are awesomee!

Is airline food from Japan safe?

Question:

I'm going to fly to Asia and my connection is through Japan and I'm wondering if the airplane food is possibly irradiated, or is airline food prepared in another country? I'm flying from US to Taiwan.

Answer:

They don't serve it if it's contaminated. They check radiation level if it's from areas around the nuke.

Do you think enough is being done to help Japan?

Question:

from other countries like the USA..

Answer:

Japan does not need any more financial assistance from overseas.
A few billion yen of donations have been sent to Japan Red Cross from within Japan and overseas.
However, the fact is that virtually none of them have been used to save the quake and tsunami victims. It has been 2 weeks from the disaster, and 400,000 people are still in temporary shelters, but, most of the money is still in the Red Cross bank account, believe or not!!
Why?
Because the Red Cross has no authority to purchase food and goods, and distribute money directly to the victims. The money should be distributed to the local city governments first who are expected to take care of the details according to the needs of their citizens. However, many of the city governments in the areas devastated by tsunami are also destroyed and many of the city workers were also victimized. So, the Red Cross has no way to distribute the money to local authorities. I know you would say, "then, why don't the government of Japan do the job?" I agree 100%. But our government bureaucrats in Tokyo keep saying, "the money should be distributed evenly to local cities, but the areas are so widespread, and the whole picture of the disaster is not certain yet." What a stupid comment! They are making the whole nation FURIOUS!!

What American sodas, sweets, or candies are not sold in Japan?

Question:

I'm sending some over for a birthday present but I don't know what is and isn't sold in Japan.
I heard they don't have poptarts, little debbie snacks, and reeces cups. What else is not sold over there?

Answer:

I've lived here 10 years and have a sweet tooth.

I've never found 3 Musketeers, black licorice (not much red either), Twinkies and all those snack cakes (they DO have an expiration date, so they have to be sent airmail)

If you want a long list check out a website in Japan that specializes in importing food for foreigners who live here Foreign Buyers Club, plus a site that ships stuff out from one of the (only 6!) Costco stores in all of Japan, The Flying Pig. Just for ideas of what's popular.

-As I have already said/mentioned
in both hiragana/kanji and romaji please.

Given the levels of radiation in Japan's seawater, should we be concerned about fish and seafood globally?

Question:

I eat a lot of seafood and fish. I also like Japanese food, green tea etc. I am wondering given the radiation spikes in the nuclear plant area (Fukushima) in Japan, should we be concerned about seafood (even if it is not from Japan). Since ocean currents do travel, how much of a risk does the radition over there impact the food chain globally?

Answer:

I'm personally laying off for now. There are no guarantees with anything these days. Our government says all is well, no harm done here. Ha...that's when you really have to worry. Issues don't surface until the percentage for cancer patients spike. Lovely, better to be safe than sorry.

French President Sarkozy and Areva CEO are now in Tokyo- May I understand...?

Question:

They have offered to help Japan with the nukes devastated by tsunami, which have been leaking out radioactive substances. May I take this as a sign that French are thinking the worst is over and they they will be able to bring the problem under control? (They would not make such an offer if they think otherwise.)

P.S. To put it in perspective: No sooner had the tsunami devastated the nukes, Areva's nuclear engineers stationed there disappeared. Now Areva is offering to send engineers back for on-site help at the nukes.

Answer:

>May I take this as a sign that French are thinking the worst is over and they they will be able to bring the problem under control? (They would not make such an offer if they think otherwise.)

I think so.

>To put it in perspective: No sooner had the tsunami devastated the nukes, Areva's nuclear engineers stationed there disappeared.

It's because TEPCO did not ask them to stay.

>Now Areva is offering to send engineers back for on-site help at the nukes.

It's because TEPCO asked them to help.

How bad are the radiation levels in japan?

Question:

how bad are the radiation levels in japan? how long will it take before it's safe to visit japan in general (not like fukishima but tokyo and in general). how long before all the radiation damage will be undone? thanks!

Answer:

Last I heard it was read at 400 rads in the immediate area, and 10 in further places about 100 miles away. Although, there have been leaks into water and the ocean, and it is most likely much higher now. JSYK, 1000 rads creates radiation poisoning, and 2-3000 is deadly.

Tokyo may not be the best place to visit until they can get a handle on the radiation seepage, which is affecting the water and is at this point harmful to small children and newborns.

I would think the southern part of Japan should be otherwise okay to visit, although I'd plan on waiting a while before trying to go on vacation. It could take years, and there may even be damage lasting to the Fukushima prefecture long after the initial problem is taken care of.

Is life back to normal in the rest of Japan?

Question:

do people go to work and schools and go out or arent they able to live normally?

Answer:

It takes life a long time to fully go back to normal after a major disaster.

Many people in other parts of Japan are able to go to work and school and go out as they normally would, but that doesn't mean their lives are fully back to normal. Many of them have family in affected areas. Many of them are still worried about the affected areas and people. Some of them are probably worried about the fear that things could still get worse for their country.

So, while parts of their lives are back to normal in unaffected areas, that doesn't mean that their lives are fully back to normal. When the risk is completely contained and over, they will begin to get back to normal in unaffected areas. Until then, it won't be fully normal for them.

Is it bad that I do not feel sad or even care about Japan's disaster?

Question:

For some reason, I do not care about what is happening in Japan at the moment, I do not care that people are dieing and have no homes and are hungry... I just dont know why!!! Does that make me a bad person?

Answer:

Naw, you're not a bad person! I think a lot of it has to do with your age. I'm 16 so I'm not trying to offend you, but a lot of times teenagers are sort of selfish and they don't really have compassion for much of anything unless it involves them. It's a phase everyone goes through :P

My class mates and I have a artist we admire and were hoping someone could send and wanted to send a message to his e-mail, just to show our admiration. Its pretty nerdy, but the idea of a response tickles our sides:

"Hello Sir! Forgive the sudden message, we are a small group of art college students in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the United States and recently dscovered your tattoo work! We really admire such bold work and hope that one day we will be able to transfer our own long thought out designs to our skin. May we ask what influenced you to begin such an intriguing process as full body tattooing? We know everyone has their own reasons, we three have been saving for our tattoos since we were 15. We wish you the best during japan's troubled times and pray you, your loved one,and countrymen stay strong and healty!

Thank you for inspiriing us,

I'm not sure what kind of full body tatto, you are talking about.

Whats a good city to stay in Japan for 3 months?

Question:

I'm going to Japan for 3 months on student exchange in November to February to experience the culture and learn the language and I'm allowed to list preferences for which city or prefecture i would like to stay in. Considering the radiation crisis and everything what do you think the best cities would be for a 16 year old exchange student?

Answer:

In or near Fukuoka. It's clean, it is by the ocean, there is a lot to do. It is also the largest city in
Kyushu, the southernmost of the four main islands of Japan. It has great seafood, the people are
nice, the weather is good. It's not too small, it's not too big. It's far from where the problems are.
Most festivals are held in warmer months, but Fukuoka has a festival in Janaury, Tokouka Ebisu.

Website to download Japanese subtitles?

Question:

I'm looking for a website where I can download Japanese subtitles for English movies so I can watch them with my girlfriend, 君に読む物語 (The Notebook) in particular at the moment.

Answer:

Sometimes downloading from piratebay.com and then copying that file to a utorrent has movies with subtitles. I have used it a few times before, and I have gotten various lanuages from dutch to french and japanese style movies seem to have subtitles too. Type in 'the notebook japanese' into that site and see what you get. Download utorrent if your interested in watching it :D then download the file!
