that he cant go back to japan because of this

Answer:
depends on the type of visa he has or wants to obtain
For a tourist visa, there is no way for the immigration officer to know that your friend has a criminal record so most likely he will be allowed in
For a work/resident visa, I believe you are asked to state on the application whether you have had any criminal convictions in the past - if he was to neglect mentioning his conviction, I am not sure how the Japanese authorities will verify this information
So, in short - your friend should be ok to enter Japan
PS. in the title of your question you refer to the convicted domestic battery person as yourself and yet in the main question you refer to a friend...
