Young Japanese men with short beards (goatees) -- is this a trend among a certain subculture of people?

Question:

Like how there is "emo"/"scene" hair to represent a subculture, and hair such as mohawks tend to be worn by certain groups of people, do these short beards (goatees???) typically belong to a certain subculture? If so, which one or what kind of people would wear one?

Sorry, I can't attach a complete link as my question never shows up that way...>_< Pls look at the guy in my AVATAR picture for an example :)

What are the most popular board games/ family games in Japan?

Question:

Also, do Japanese play "carrom board"?

Answer:

Japanese kids these days play computer games and psp, but 囲碁 (igo)、将棋 (shougi)、麻雀 (mah-jong) are still popular. We still have 囲碁-only channel on tv that's talking about 囲碁 strategies all day. My grandpa used to watch it every day. University students pull an all-nighter playing 麻雀 (that's a traditional student culture). Some prefer Chess (western将棋) but I think it's less popular. 人生ゲーム is also famous but I've never played it before.

I don't know about the carrom board. But some people seem to play carrom board.

How much will it cost me to travel and stay in Japan for one month?

Question:

I actually want to know the cost of these two cities for two separate trips.
1. Tokyo for one month
2. Hiroshima for one month
I want an overall price including round trip plane ticket, hotel, and average amount for food. This can all be very ball park answer. Also include what an additional amount would be to see major attractions. When the time comes I will definitely be seeing a travel agency. So add a couple more thousand to the amount if you want, to much money saved is better than to little. Thanks!!! (also I'm not thinking about going till after 4 years)

Answer:

Air fare: You need $1000-1500 if you are departing from US

Hotel: Usually, you need $100 per night if you want to stay at a hotel.
If you want to save money, you need to stay at a hostel which will cost $30-50 per night.
If you want to stay at a luxury hotel, you need $200-300 or more.

Food, transportation and others: You need $50-100 or so per day. If you want to enjoy shopping, you need more.

So you need $100 for hotel and $75 for others per day. If you want to stay in Japan for 4 weeks, the total cost will be $4900 and airfare.

Cute (kawaii) bento boxes?

Question:

okayy want some cute bento boxes and need you help ! >.< if u have ever been to japan town well i havent i need to know where they are there to cuz ima go there in a week kay ? also how about the hole punchers for the seaweed rap plz. also if u have any cute ways for food in a bento please say so and tell me what it is and how u make it plz !

Answer:

Bento can be very simple or very elaborately arranged. In Japan, there is a bento style called kyaraben or “character bento”, where the bento is designed to look like popular Japanese cartoon characters (anime) such as Anpanman, Doraemon and Mickey Mouse.

For an easy Japanese bento lunch box try some boiled white rice or onigiri (rice ball) with a rolled omlette and a few small main dishes like karaage (Japanese fried chicken), hamburger, tonkatsu (deep fried pork cutlet), gyoza (dumpling), spring rolls, mini sausages, potato or pasta salad.

Japan: For a country being known as favoring white skin...?

Question:

Why is Gyaru popular? I'm very curious! I can't find a lot of information as to why tanning and Gyrau is popular, considering that bleaching the skin in order to have whiter skin is popular too.

Answer:

Ganguro is outdated and not popular now.
I think the "ganguro" look is a form of fashion rebellion or fashion anarchism of the youth way back in the 90s. As you said, many are obsessed with white and fair skin so some girls went for the different look and started tanning their skin (really tan) and putting heavy make ups.
For the regular "gyaru" look, these girls are trying to achieve the "California beach girl" look. With medium tan skin, blonde wavy hair, bronze make up and summer sexy clothes. Gyaru is still quite common now.

But you should know, ganguro is only a type of a gyaru.

Any way to house with family in Japan to work for multiple years?

Question:

I've seen about homestay programs, but I'm wondering if maybe there is a way I can stay with a family and just work for the family doing whatever employment? Or finding outside employment and paying rent to the family? Also, if I stay with a family, can I be hired by a Japanese company and then acquire citizenship for working there?

Answer:

No. Sorry. You need a four year degree to qualify for a work visa. That means a BA / BS degree. This is the requirement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The only jobs available are those that a Japanese can't or won't do. Most work visas start at one year. The employer must sponsor the employee. If a Japanese can do the job, they will always be hired first.
You have to live in Japan for no less than five years before you can apply for citizenship.

What are the chances of dying in a natural disaster in japan?

Easy-to get jobs for American foreigners in Japan? NOT A TEACHER?

Question:

I'm not the one for public speaking, and I love Japan so much I want to live there. Are there any easy to get jobs there for Americans like me that can speak fluent Japanese? Not an english teacher or a business translator.

Answer:

It may not be easy, but put in the effort and I am sure you can do so. If there is a will there is a way. I'm not sure what kind of job you are hoping to pursue, but as long as it is something with relatively high demand in most developed countries, then you should be fine.

Good luck and people may say, "Too hard," "Try this instead" ... well, if other Americans (or non-Japanese for that matter) have achieved your dream, why should you not be one of them?

If you work just as hard as the people who have right now what you want, and if this is something you really want...not only why should you not be one of them, but why not pursue what you REALLY want?

People told my mom when she wanted to move to a very exclusive area, "You are crazy. Its too hard. Move somewhere else" she ignored them. She tried and tried and she got what she wanted.

My moms story has followed me throughout my life. Granted, I am only 21, but I took this viewpoint and although people have told me plenty of times, "It's too ___, it's too ___. Do this instead," I said, "Well, I would rather try for first place, than settle for second-best."

You only live once...follow your dream. If things don't work out the first time, try and try again. :)

I am 100% sure there is a space for you in Japan -- just waiting for you. Millions of people live AND WORK in Japan. I am POSITIVE there is room for one extra person. :)

Gaijin or not, there is room for you :)

How do you use によって grammatically in Japanese?

Question:

そして、「にとって」?

And when do you use the particle に vs. を for doing something to something else?

For example, both 「魚を食べる」と「魚に食べる」mean the same right? Since ni directs the verb? Please help, very confused....

Answer:

によって can means according, by, due to or because of. It really depends what the sentence is but here are some examples

音楽の好みは人によって,すきすぎです
Music preferences vary from person to person
友達を見ることによってどんな人かわかる
You can tell what a person is by looking at their friends
思想は言葉によって表現される
Thoughts are expressed by words

You only use に for verbs like come, return and go. For others use を

What are the differences between these words? Please explain!!?

Question:

I am a little confused. In their groups, they sound like they have the same meanings. Can you explain when each is used? Please us in example sentences. Thank You!

To protect‐ 守る、擁護する

To hear- 聞く、聴く、

To understand- 理解する、知る、分かる

What is the word for stepfather and stepfamily?
I looked in the dictionary but my Japanese friend said no one says mamachichi.....what is the word? He didn't know.

Answer:

擁護する is used in disputes. Conference で He は her を擁護した。

守る is used in various occasions.
Ichiro は right field を守る。
Wife は home を守る。
Father は son を守る。
Emperor は tradition を守る。

聞く is just hear.
聴く is listen (in concentration).

知る is just know.
理解する and 分かる mean understand.(same meaning)

But 理解するand 擁護する are used in formal occasions. Difficult chinese characters kanji are for formal occasions.

Mamachichi is seldom used.
Japanese would rather say "義理の父" father in law.
Father in law is not same as mamachichi though.

If you have to explain exact relation, you have to say "my true father have died and my mother remarried him."

Are there any expats and us military guys i can meet up in japan?

Question:

i heard tokyo is one of them

Answer:

Military personels always stay at US bases in Japan.

What is the average amount in US dollars it would take for a tour of Japan?

Question:

I'm just looking for a round about amount. I already know for two people, round trip flights would be around $6,000. But, for the sake of planning for savings, how much would it be to take a tour of the country and stay for about 2-3 weeks? And any advice? Thanks!! =)

Answer:

With the yen so strong, I'd say plan about $250 a day per person for a basic, adult tour. (Ie: staying in business hotels instead of youth hostels and sneaking overnights in public baths.) Japanese hotels tend to charge per person, so there isn't that much savings for two travelling over one. My estimate includes hotel (10,000 yen), food (3000 yen), transportation (2000 -- some days you'll have more and some days you'll have less), entry fees (3000 yen) and miscellaneous shopping.

If you can do a homestay program, you'll save on hotels, and get to see more of the culture -- but you'll have to bring a nice gift for your hosts. If you can find good deals in hotels, then my estimate is pretty high. With the disaster and everything, things might be a little cheaper than usual on the tourism front.

(BTW, I think your plane tickets are a little high. You might check and see if you can move your trip a few weeks, and see if you can get out of a peak season.)

Calling all Asian especially Japanese Guys!?

Question:

I just wonder why in Japan that japanese Guy fancy white girls and their own versus a black girl,So now onward to questions that I can't answer because I'm not an Asian male. Why do Japanese or Asian guys feel that black girls aren't attractive as white girls? Are they still into this perception of "white is right" and that "white people=money?"

Answer:

Girl, you are so desparate! I wonder if you really are a black girl, or some troll trying to stir up inter-racial hate, because this is the THIRD time I've seen you post some variation of this question.

Most Asian guys are attracted to Asian girls. But being guys, the heterosexuals can be attracted by anything with boobs and a waist. Skin color doesn't matter!

That said, I think a lot of guys (like guys anywhere) are concerned about shared culture and values for long-term relationships. IME, Japanese guys can be very sweet and old-fashioned and they want to get married and have kids.

Japan car racing travel?

Question:

Im going to Japan, I want to take my boyfriend to see some crazy car racing/drifting/drag racing. anyone know of places in japan we can go to see this?

Answer:

Without knowing someone who lives there, that won't be easy. It's nothing like the Tokyo drift movies. Gas is over $7 a gallon, so most can't afford to use gas trying to outrun the police.
Many streets in Tokyo are too crowded, narrow, or winding to do any racing. A friend told me some racers now go in the hills at night. Away from traffic and the police.

Only he and you can define this relationship. Whatever other people here tell you, does not matter at all.

Question:

I was just listening to some J-Pop and I realized that a lot of songs were by groups, not soloists. Like the "girl groups" and stuff.

Anybody visited Japan?

Question:

I have a few friends in Japan and I'm wondering if this summer is an okay time to visit. How is Tokyo? My local friends are going too and we have never been to Tokyo but have dreamt of it our whole lives. Is there anything like it and has/does anybody live(d) there?

Answer:

Summer is the best time to visit Japan ^^ Especially during the "hanami" season when the cherry trees blossom!
One of my friends went to Japan for two weeks, and I also have a relative who's been living in Japan for 2 years before he came back to Finland where we live, and they all have good things to say about the country. The people are very nice, but they said that there was a lot of people working in shops and so on that would be nervous or shy when they came since they are foreigners and the staff in the shops didn't speak english/didn't know if they spoke japanese so it was a bit awkward.
I don't have anything to say personally though, since I haven't been to Japan yet.

着うた means preview song (though not a literal translation)
RBT means Ringback Tones

Umm I'm not sure about the whole can you download songs from EMI music Japanese even though you're not Japanese...Well nationality doesn't come into the equation at all lol For Japanese based music companies, a lot of them aims their produce to the Japanese market. They're expecting that whoever is visiting their website is actually IN Japan, or has bank accounts in Japan that they can access online. Paid membership is the norm, and you'd pay online with whatever Japanese bank account you have.

Change my name to a japanese one?

Question:

So, I'd like to move to Japan in a few years, after I'm done with my japanese studies and other things, and I'm planning on staying there, not coming back.
My name is "Jennifer" and I think it's really hard to write in japanese, also it's pretty hard to pronounce it... I personally would like to change my first name to a japanese name if I'm actually going to move there just so that it would be easier for them to pronounce and easier for me to write.

But, I don't want them to think that I'm weird if I use a japanese name that's "not mine". I read somewhere that people that aren't japanese, and that uses a japanese name are concidered otakus and so on, and I don't want that.
So, my question is basically: Would I be treated differently if I change my name? Or.. more differently than if I'd use my real name? I know that they will never treat me as a japan, since I'm not one, but still. I don't want to add anything to the situation since I'd still be a foreigner and, yeah ..
I'm swedish, so my last name is "Rönnblad". I don't plan on changing that.

So anyone, if you could help me, I'd be extremely thankful! ^^ <3 (I'm NOT an otaku, just so you know. I'm interested in the culture, but I'm not totally crazy. -.-')

Answer:

I don't know why you think Jennifer is hard to write or say in Japanese. It really isn't. If you write your name in katakana (and you're consistent with the characters you use) people will not have a hard time saying your name. It just won't sound like the English name.

Unless you're planning on becoming a Japanese citizen, you don't need a Japanese name.

Japanese girls... who like girls?

Question:

Im new here, its my first time posting and Im kind of embarrased.

Im a lesbian, and Im living in Japan for my job. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on dating Japanese girls. From what I can see its really hard to meet them. The lesbian word is so taboo!!

I don't really like gay bars or clubs because I totally stand out as the only foreign girl. Does anyone have any advice? I would really like to experience being with a japanese girl ..

Answer:

You could try the more casual places in and around Shinjuku 2-chome, etc. There are joints that have a mixed clientele both in terms of ethnicity and sexual orientation. The crowd you are looking for could be hanging out at a given Kirin City or whatever on a given night, rather than at "a lesbian bar". You just need to go on a bit of an urban safari. The fact is...establishments that cater to the closeted tend to be inherently unwelcoming to new faces. Therefore a place where anyone would feel welcome would be your best bet.

Why isnt japan as beautiful as europe, why doesnt japan have any beautiful ancient cities like Europe?

Question:

countries in Europe are very ancient, moreso than Japan, they maintained the artist & style & architecture of the Early Middle Ages that still exist today.
There us still churches & buildings & living quarters still inhabited since the Romanesque period.
Just walking through the city & alleyways is like walking & experiencing history, its quite amazing & its very fairy tale bookish. in the city centers you are litterly walking the same scenes & streets that people have been living in for 1000s of years.

But Japan doesnt have any of that?it is very modern & everything is just new, its only full of modern concrete & steel & business buildings, the whole of japan is like big New york, but japan is supposed to be ancient but its like they werent ancient enough, then why cant they compare to europe in Beauty & culture???

Answer:

So you are expecting to see a "London" or "Rome" here in Japan? LOL
Most of Tokyo is rebuilt after war so that explains why it's mostly concrete. But if you go outside Tokyo and maybe travel to Kyoto, Nara or Himeji, you'll see "more traditional" architectures, buildings and other stuffs. That's why SO MANY EUROPEANS visit Japan every year.

And no offense, most of Europe is bland and boring.
London, Rome, Berlin, Prague = their architectures & churches look exactly the same

Athens, Dubrovnik, Paris, Reykjavik and few cities are only unique and beautiful.
