List of everyone who died (or is still missing) in Japan...?

Question:

Is there anything like that? A link, maybe?
And when I say "died in Japan" I mean because of the Tsumani.

If this is the first you heard about it, picture a sand castle on the edge of the ocean. Then the tide comes in and reduces it to nothing. That's what happened to Japan.

Answer:

This is a list of those who died. (Wiki format)

How far away is miyajima from Mt. Fuji?

Question:

i'd also like to know how far away miyajima is from kyoto? and how far kyoto is from Mt. fuji?

Answer:

I only know the time it takes by train.
Miyajima is near Hiroshima. Hiroshima is a bit under 2 hours from Kyoto by shinkansen (bullet train)
Mt. Fuji is about 2 hours from Kyoto, too, but in the opposite direction.
If you want distances, you'll need a map.

I am starting to wonder why you need a virtual encyclopedia given to you on Japan. You really should check wikipedia. You were asking for an encyclopedia of questions yesterday, too.

@Celeste - The Panda isn't native to Japan - you need to research before you guess about native animals in Asia. Animals native to Japan are the Tanuki (Raccoon Dog), wild Boar, Moonbear (Asian Black Bear), and the Japanese Macaque.

Do you think the incident in Japan is just an Overreaction to the United states?

Question:

Do you believe it was a bit exaggerated by the media?

Answer:

No. If anything people are under-reacting. The reactors needs to be buried. Two weeks have passed and not one shovel of dirt has been thrown onto the reactors.

If you think people are over-reacting, consider Chernobyl...which suffered a similar meltdown 25 years ago. Yes...25 years ago and the place is still radioactive to this day.

Are there really places in japan like in kong fu panda?

Question:

just like the dojo up in the mountains or all the tall mountains with the bridges connecting them? if you didn't see the movie im mean places like this

http://oi51.tinypic.com/156477l.jpg

and how much would a place like that cost? just wondering :) because i wana own a dojo when I'm older. I know it sound stupid, but thats my dream life.

Answer:

Well, Japan does have temples high in the mountains for monks who study Buddhism, but I have never heard of a Dojo in the mountains. I have heard of crazy foreigners going into the mountains to look for these so called mystical Dojos that only exist in legend, but of course they get lost and need a rescue team to come and get them.
Also, you want to own a Dojo in the mountains? All Japanese land is private land, so first you would need to buy a mountain (there are mountains for sale but you better have the cash). Next you want a Dojo, so you would need to build one, which of course isn't free. Then of course you would need students, and unless you are a world renowned Master, no one will come to study under you.

Its a nice dream and it is really great to have dreams, but this particular dream is very very impractical. As you get older and understand reality, you will understand that what I am saying is not meant to hurt you, it is just the truth.

How do you find a job in Japan?

Question:

I've been trying to get a job in Japan for as long as I can remember. But it seems that my strategies are not working(as I'm still working in US). And with a family to support, I cannot really quit everything and go to Japan directly. That would be too selfish. I'm wondering if there is any other ways to get a decent job in Japan. I'm in software engineering, so there are a lot of jobs out there. I guess it's my strategy. I tried to get a teaching job at first, but I don't have the experience and failed the interviews miserably. Then I tried job sites online. Also I tried my friend in Japan, but that goes nowhere either. I also tried a few agents, but I don't think that's a good way to go.

Language-wise, I'm about intermediate Japanese level. I can read articles on asahi.com, a bit slow but I don't think language will be a big problem.

Thanks for any input, encouragement, comments. This is my dream so it's very important to me.

Answer:

The US Army, Navy, and Airforce have American bases in Japan. You can go to job announcement sites like USA Jobs (www.usajobs.com) and do searches on "Japan" as location of the job.

In the 1960s my dad got a job in Japan working for the US Army Computer Systems Command. We all moved over there and lived just outside Tokyo for 6 years and I have some of the best memories of my life there. We lived off base with the Japanese in a Japanese house. In fact my bedroom had Soji rice screen all the way around it and Tatami mats on the floor... we slept on Futons (Japanese Futons... not American ones)... and our playmates were mostly Japanese.

Otherwise I don't think the Japanese will hire you directly. They have a very homogenized society and you can only stay there for a short period of time... you can't emigrate there. When we lived there the cost of living was very low and $1 was equal to 360 yen. I just remember I could buy a whole handful of candy for 10 yen and their bubble gum was the best! My dad was a GS9 with the Gov't yet we had a full time servant in the house. I lived there from age 5 to 12. I didn't even give myself a bath for a good part of that time... believe it or not!! We lived in the lap of luxury for sure. The tables are turned now. Things are expensive compared to a usual American salary and you might be hard pressed to live off base.

How long did the wave go in japan?

Japan Exchange Program?

Question:

My question isn't for school-related purposes. I would like to know if there are any programs out there that can help someone in America to get exchanged over to Japan - but not while in high school. As an adult, since... well, I'll be 18 in a few months.

What I meant was... exchanged to live with a host family? Unless no one can find anything on that...

There's also the possibility of me becoming an English teacher... so helping me with links/information on that would be helpful too.

I would love it if you could give me as much information as possible.

Thank you for your time.

Answer:

If you plan on going to college, you will probably want to choose a college that offers study abroad programs in Japan, since that will probably be the easiest way for you to go. If you have already chosen a school and it doesn't have such a program, you might be able to go with another school's program -- as someone in whatever office deals with study abroad at your school for more information on that. You could also wait until you finish your 4-year degree and apply for a teaching position with a program like the JET Program. However, note that you MUST have a four-year degree for these programs due to government regulations for granting work visas (there are a few ways around them but they involve being married to a Japanese citizen or someone else who already has a work visa or having 10 years of experience working in your field). In addition, teaching positions rarely (if ever) use homestays to house the teachers. You usually have your own place to live. Beyond that, your other major option would be to study Japanese through a program like the Yamasa Institute in Aichi prefecture.

Question:

Will I be ok if I travel to Japan this April?

Question:

I need to transfer at Tokyo airport for 2 hours. I heard Tokyo is affected by radioactive. Will I be ok if I go there? I'm really scared right now but I cannot cancel my ticket.
What is the worst thing I will get while I'm there? (cancer...?)

Answer:

The amount of radiation you will have absorbed naturally while flying on any airplane anywhere in the world will FAR exceed any radiation you might absorb while being in the airport at Tokyo caused by the nuclear power plant.

That said, both levels of radiation are very well within the safe levels of radiation to absorb over a year.

What's your question?

What's wrong with Japan?

Question:

Is it an Island or Country?

Answer:

A country comprised of an archipelago, and what is wrong with Japan? They are handling this double whammy of disasters very well if it was in the US we would still be waffling about and refusing to spend money(better levees anyone?), plus people would be looting flat-screens and rims. I wish we had the collective intelligence of the Japanese.

Do you think that California is going to have a big earthquake next?...because Japan just had a big one!?

Question:

Ten years ago, Japan had a big earthquake on January 17. Exactly one year later on January 17th (the same date!!!) California had one. and it was big...so this time do you think California will have a really big one??

Answer:

The Pacific "Ring of Fire" does seem to have been particularly active lately. This year we've had major earthquakes in Chile, New Zealand and Japan. Does that mean the U.S. West Coast is next? Scientists don't know enough to say for sure. All we know is that California and the Pacific Northwest will have big earthquakes eventually. We just don't know when. If you live in those regions, the best thing to do is be prepared. Keep an emergency kit on hand, and know what to do when The Big One strikes.

Will it be safe to live in Japan after the they clean up all the radiation leaks and whatnot?

Question:

I want to go live in Tokyo, but after this terrible earthquake, and more seriously, the nuclear reactors leaking, will it be safe to live there anytime soon, without facing long term effects on my health from the radiation leaks and such?

Japan in general will be safe, but not Fukushima.

Check out this site. Chernobyl is still abandoned to this day due to high radiation levels. (Chernobyl suffered a similar melt down in 1986):

Okay, I know what's going on right now in Japan. However, I only know the basics. Earthquake, Tsunami, Nuclear Plant crisis (partially).

Communicating with my Japanese friend? ?

Question:

Communicating with my Japanese friend?

Hi I have recently made a friend from japan or penal per say it was a program from our school and so we or him and I recently send emails to each other at time's it is a language barrier but I know enough Japanese to have a Long conversation but sometimes when I email him I mix up my word order and get confused I told him I'm sorry and he replied back in Japanese and said    (ごめん  何が言いたいのか全然分からない  もしかして  外人ですか??)  "Perhaps foreigners do not understand what I say sorry?

Q: So what did he actually mean when he said this does this mean he wants to try communicating better with me?

Answer:

He said: "Sorry, I don't understand anything you are trying to say. Are you a foreigner?"

ごめん -Sorry
何が言いたいのか- [What you] want to say
全然分からない- [I] don't understand at all
もしかして-Perhaps
外人ですか??- You are foreign?

The key point of his sentence was that he wasn't able to understand your communication at all...I guess the implication there he would like to improve the communication.

Why will the Japanese Yen weaken dramatically by July 2011?

Question:

After studying Japanese yen to United States dollar exchange rate forecasts on Forecast.org, I found out that the Yen to USD will weaken from 81 to around 91.9 on average.

Is this due to the amount tourism in Japan during the months of summer.

The yen will ten strengthen after July 2011.

Is this a reliable prediction?

Answer:

My co-worker has a degree in economics, and he says the yen will continue to strengthen. Basically, what the other guys said -- Japanese companies will be changing their dollars into yen to help rebuild back home, and also there's all the charity flowing into Japan -- buying yen and making it more precious.

At the same time, a lot of countries are trying to weaken the yen. So, if their efforts work, I wouldn't be surprised if the yen is about 90/dollar. That's where it was, approximately, before the earthquake. Don't forget, though, if the US economy sucks anymore, the dollar is going to weaken, and everything else will look good.

Exchange students have it good; when I was an exchange student, I think we were allowed to work 20 hours a week . . . so if you work, you'll be getting your money in yen. If you can save any of it, and send it home, you'll have some bucks!

How did another earthquake in Japan worsened situation in Fukushima?

Question:

Answer:

How would it not? The first earthquake damaged the cooling system in one of the reactors. The aftershocks continually made it hard to repair and cool the reactor and did even more damage.

Japan politics before world war two?

Question:

What were japans politics before WWII? I don't need whole history just the politics leading up to WWII. Straight forward answer would be appreciated. Please DON'T tell me to go on Google or Wikipedia and look it up myself. Links would also be appreciated though.

Answer:

Indeed the Japanese led a brutal regime with an enormous army. The Emperors were worshipped as they warred with China. They beat the Chinese many times in the past, and I remember correctly the Rape of Nanking was also around this time; either that or the Chinese were still recovering from the damage of the war that started in the early 20's, in which the Chinese were enslaved in labor camps...

Most of the time, politicians were elected solely based on their campaigns goals against the Chinese, which at that time were called by them "The Sick Men of Asia" and there are still many politicians who succeed this way in Japan, such as the current party leaders. All of this led to the Japanese to be known as "devils".

Much has not changed in Japan. So naturally, the Japanese believed in the ways of the Axis.

How can I put a little more weight in Japan?

Question:

Hi,
I have been currently in Japan for 8 months. In between, I spent 2 in Mexico, my country. When I got to Japan I had a bit extra fat, and very flaccid muscles in general. I started exercising at home and riding bicycle regularly. Then my legs got stronger and I lost some weight on the trunk. Oh, my diet here is morning: green juice, banana or apple, a slice of bread and cereal. Lunch, it varies. Could be rice and meat, noodles. Night: there is usually miso soup, fish, rice, some beans and salad.
I then went to Mexico and my diet had a lot of tortillas, meat on a regular basis, and lots of vegetables. I didn't gain much weight around my waist, but instead my muscles got a little bit bigger.
Then I came to Japan and started eating as usual. Slightly over a month later I realize my shoulders are a bit smaller and my arms just won't get bigger. Same happens with my legs. My shorts finally got lose around the waist, but the rest just looks too skinny.
I know the details here aren't enough, and that I should consult with a dietician, but some advice based upon your own experience will be of help.
Thank you

What are the prices in Akihabara?

Question:

I am going to akihabara in the summer but i dont know if wut im getting till then is enough so can someone tell me where the prices range from retro games to average figures (nothing to big)

Answer:

There is a popular retro game store in Akihabara called 'Super Potato', Ikebukuro has an outlet too. It is an incredibly easy shop to find as it has retro game characters stuck all over the outside of the building. It also has retro game music playing outside. It's located on one of the little streets across the main street from the station. Google has a map for it. Just look up Super Potato Akihabara (Retro Game Soft Heaven!).

http://www.superpotato.com/

THe prices at this shop for retro games and retro game systems can run anywhere between 500 yen to 3000 yen (some rare games might cost more). The retro game systems (sega saturn, super famicon and so on) can run you upwards 7000 yen +. Would you believe they even have a virtua boy? =P

What are some good Japanese rock bands?

Question:

What are some good Japanese rock bands?
I don't listen to Japanese music, but my friend does..
THANKS :)

Answer:

I happen to like Orange Range, Flow, D-UVERworld, and Sprint.

If your friend likes anime, find out what her favorite theme songs are and track down the song & artist. Instead of having the theme song written specifically for the show like we do here, Japanese anime often takes regular music and uses that, so there's almost always a studio version.

CAN I GET RADIATION ON ME FROM TOUCHING A BOX THAT CAME FROM JAPAN AFTER THE RADIATION LEAK?

Question:

I WORK WITH A COMPANY THAT RECIEVES HUGE BOXES OF PARTS FROM JAPAN. AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE & RADIATION LEAK AND ALL, I WAS JUST WONDERING IF THE BOX THAT JUST CAME IN FROM JAPAN HAS RADIATION ON IT & HOW COULD I TELL?

Answer:

Not unless the box actually came from the reactor facility where the leak is.

And even if that were the case (i.e. the box is radioactive) it would have set off scanners long before it ever got out of the airport in the US, let alone to you.

So, no worries. Chances are that box was already out of Japan long before the earthquake even happened. Remember it takes 2-3 weeks for freight to cross the ocean by boat, and I doubt a "huge box of parts" would be sent via airmail - too expensive.

Why do Japanese sit on the floor?

Question:

Answer:

In western houses, floor are like part of ground.
People need shoes, chairs, carpet, beds...... in houses.

In asian culture, floor are like part of extended bed.
Floors are raised and cushioned, insulated. People take off shoes entering houses. They sit on the floor, they even sleep on the floor.
In fact,Japanese kanji character which means "floor" is "床", pronounced TOKO or YUKA. This same character "床" could also means "bed".

It's my personal theory, but the essential part of western houses are roof and wall, whereas that of asian houses are roof and floor.
Most of western traditional houses have very robust roof and wall, but floor is like ground, cold and hard. Most of asian traditional houses have secure roof and raised floor, but walls are sometime very simple and airy. I guess it's because of climate. The mainstream origin of western culture came from north Europe, where they have severe winter. The mainstream origin of Asian culture came from the central or south Asia, where they have hot and humid summer.

Please also remember that many of modern Japanese houses are now very westernized.

I have a question about my Hiragana!?

Question:

Hi! I've just learned Hiragana, but I do have one question. Although I know exactly how the symbols look I sometimes forget whether I should end a stroke with a tip or not. If I accidentally add a tip where it does not belong, or forget to add a tip is that really a problem? I can still write words so that a Japanese person can understand, right? Also, how big of a mistake is this considered. I can't get the symbols to look EXACTLY as they do in the book, but almost.

Answer:

I think it's OK.

Most Japanese people now use computer rather than hand-writing. So even if your hand-writing is not so accurate, it's not going to be a big problem.

A question regarding people height?

Question:

Looked through the previous questions and became curious.
I'm average for a European - 171cm for a female.

But somehow I always end up dating men that are either the same height as me or a bit shorter than me.
Do Japanese men care about the height difference? I know that generally Japanese women are a lot shorter than European, but anyway. It's just that a Japanese friend of mine told me that Japanese men tend to be intimidated if the girl's taller than them (and I guess generally, even the same width as them? xD).

But that Japanese friend of mine is 1.80cm, so it's never been a problem for him.

What do you think?
Once again, I'm not sticking to the stereotypes, but there certainly are differences in mentality.

Answer:

I never have that problem but i think it's a lot more comfortable to have a taller male in a relationship.

Please help to translate this?

Question:

If any of you know, Japanese seiyuu gathered a group called Seiendan on Youtube where they posted a song they performed together and a message to all the Japanese. to do their best.

I just wanted to thank a particular seiyuu for joining the group in the message video. It's gonna be a twitter message, so could anyone please translate it for me?

"Great work on joining the Seiendan! (I'm meaning to use "お疲れ様でした" here) Those words definitely lightened up everyone's mood. Japanese people are amazing afterall (use やっぱり). 貴方も、頑張って下さい!"

Thank you!

Answer:

声援団に参加してくれて、どうもありがとう!
お疲れ様でした。
この声援のおかげで、きっとみんなの気持ちも明るくなったことでしょう。
やっぱり日本人って、素晴らしい。貴方も頑張って下さい。

(Thank you very much for joining the Seiendan!
Good job.
Those words definitely lightened up everyone's mood.
Japanese people are amazing afterall. You 頑張って(hang in there), too.)

You should be able to just copy and paste what I wrote (I'm Japanese).
Thanks for taking interest in Japan relief activity.

Why did everybody go BESERK over japan but not over newzealand?

Question:

cause it kinda pisses me off i mean new Zealand had also an earthquake and most people didn't even help
but now that japan has an earthquake on EVERY WEBSITE IT SAYS DONATE JAPAN RELIEF DONATE!!
and they did nothing like that for new zealand and for china in 2008

Answer:

You all are forgetting one big difference. new zealand had a 6.3 earthquake and 144 died , with over 200 more people still missing. But in japan, the earthquake was a 9.0. BIG difference. PLUS they has a TSUNAMI. With both of those natural disasters, about 8000 people died and 10,000 + people missing. So while you may saying this is not fair. which one do you think had the worst? japan I would say and that is why people are donating. I wiped out a whole city. And to add on top of that, they might have a nuke disaster. So how ca you act like, ah this is not fair, people help japan but not china or new zealand? The disaster is far worse in japan.

Do Japanese men prefer BLONDE American women?

Question:

To brunette American women. I'm 4'10", pale, and have thick wavy brown hair and green eyes.

But I always used to hear they loved blondes, until a poll I read recently this year that said less than 1% liked blondes.

I have a hard time believing this is true...so could you please tell me if they prefer blondes, and if I will be considered less attractive for my brown hair? >.< Thanks!!!

Answer:

Some do some don't is the best answer you will get. Its like saying do black men prefer white women? I know you are probably inquisitive but as we are all humans and share the same DNA we won't be always tied to dating within our own race
