Middle school in japan?

i understand that in middle school in japan they have to take a test to get into high school but i was wondering the format of the test like do they have multiple choice parts or is it all fill in the blank and short answer ( i am writing a speech about education in the U.S and i wanted to use the japanese system as an example of their rigorous level..) thanks
