Answer:

As long as you abide by Japanese customs, traditions and culture, you will have a fabulous time.
And, if you make even a minute attempt at saying something in their language, the Japanese will treat you royally.
That said, if you behave like a boor, expect to be treated as such.
For example, a recent comment from a British couple that refused to take off their shoes at the entrance of the hotel they were staying in. This couple was so adamant that they even started arguing with the staff.(at first, the staff had come up to them and asked them to take off their shoes, which they refused to do. The next day again they refused to abide by the hotel rules.
Needless to say, this couple did not have a wonderful experience.

I, on the other hand, have been treated royally and on occasions felt like a mpvie star.

There are some places that prohibit Americans from entering, but these are few and far between.
I have traveled from Hokkaido to Okinawa, and have not seen any such place.
If you find a place that does bar Americans, it is because they have been victims of rowdy, unruly
behavior by drunken Americans.
