Anybody that lives in Tokyo? What's it like there?

Question:

Are things expensive there?
What is Shibuya like?
Is there a lot of crime there?

Answer:

I've visited Tokyo, although have never lived there.

Things aren't super expensive, about the same prices as you would see in any modern, large city. A (big) meal costs around 9 or 10 dollars, if you go to one of the standard vending machine food places. Other things like clothes and shoes have a wide range; common brands of shoes (Nike, Tiger etc) are around $60-100 a pair, but of course you can go cheaper and more expensive if you like.

Shibuya is pretty cool, quite trendy and fashionable, and apparently the home of bubble-gum J-Pop. Shibuya is famous for it's six-ways crossing, where a 'sea of humanity' streams across the intersection at all hours of the day. We camped out at Starbucks at one end of the intersection and watched for a while, but you have to be sneaky in taking photos because the waitresses will give you the bum's rush at the first sign of a camera.

There is no crime in Japan. I read about and witnessed the seedy side of Shinjuku, and I am sure you can find trouble there if you wanted to, but people just don't get attacked and robbed out of the blue. Tokyo is fine wherever you go.
