In ancient China, they believed that immortals lived in Mt. 蓬莱.
Mt. Fuji had several names before. One of them is Mt. 蓬莱.
Actually, you can find 徐福's monument and his legends around Mt. Fuji even now.

Ancient Chinese people believed that strange civilization existed in Japan.
Also, 玄宗皇帝 planned to invade Japan because of the legend.
And, several ancient under-ocean ruins are actually found in Japan.
(They are not researched yet because the ocean current is too fast.)
Even in ancient era, they believed that the Japanese was a long-life race.
