How much would be a good amount to live off in Japan for 12 days?

Question:

I have been asked to teach Drama in Japan and the stay is going to work out about at about 12 days. 4 of those days I will be working with the staff and students involved in the workshops and they have offered me 50,000yen for my work. Being new to this, I was wondering if this would be enough to live off? I don't have to worry about acommodation so it would just be food, drink and any extra fun visits and touristy things I may decide to do.
Any advice would be welcome.
Thank you.

Answer:

Depends on what you want to do. Going to bars can really drive the price up, as well as expensive restaurants. You can get a subway day pass for about 1000 yen, so getting around is no big deal.
As long as you don't splurge too much, then yes it is quite possible.
Consider ways to save money such as buying some food in a supermarket instead of a restaurant for at least one meal a day if you want to conserve.
If you want a list of typical prices, try

It's more or less the same for all of Japan despite the title.

Yahoo also has a good database of country and
regional guides to look through.

Hope all that helps.
