Japanese grammar question about 歌舞伎町の女王?

Question:

I was looking up the lyrics to this song by 椎名林檎. And I didn't understand the following:

"一度栄し者でも必ずや衰えゆく"
What is the purpose of the し between 栄 and 者？

消えて行った女を憎めど夏は今
女王と云う肩書きを誇らしげに掲げる
And what is the purpose of 憎めど... in particular I don't understand the meaning of the ど.

Answer:

＞「一度栄し者でも必ずや衰えゆく」
Those who (are) once prosperous will fade away.
「栄える」の文語調。意味は同じ。
諺は長年継承されてきたもので、文語調で書かれることが多い。
因みに口語では必ずの後の「や」は不要。

例：かつて榮し都 / 永久に榮し都
共に副詞により時制が決まる。「し」自身に時制は無い。　

＞「消えて行った女を憎めど夏は今」
「ど」も文語調。意味は「が」 (but or however)と同じ。
口語では「憎むが」と活用する。

例：罪は憎めど人は憎まず = 罪は憎むが人は憎まない。
I hate crimes, but I don't hate people (or humans).
