What are some good Edo period sights in Tokyo?

Question:

I'm going to Japan for work later this year and am very interested in the samurai culture, specifically, the Tokugawa period. What are some good destinations in and around Tokyo?

Cheers,

Ravyn

Answer:

Unfortunately, very little outside of the Edo Castle (Chiyoda ward) district has survived from the Edo period. This is because the Kanto area has suffered several devastating earthquakes and the resulting fires in the last 300 years, not to mention the destruction from WW2. The last earthquake (2nd only to the recent earthquake disaster that resulted in the tsunami damage) was the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 which destroyed over 75% of the city.

There are musuems with exhibits from old Edo - here is one website in English: http://www.edo-tokyo-museum.or.jp/englis…

If you get time, I highly recommend Toshogu Shrine in Nikko which is a good day trip to one of the more beautiful preserves in Japan where Tokugawa Ieyasu is enshrined.
