I ask as I am going to Japan to work and would like to know how far I should ideally be away from Fukushima to be as safe as anywhere else (or just to the extent that there is no risk to my health)?

Where are you going to work in Japan ? You won't be allowed near the so called danger zone, so there's no chance of any risk(s). Over 99% of Japan is safe.
