Why is it so important to be polite in Japan?

Question:

Do you also have to be polite when you're in a bad mood?

Answer:

It's a cultural development that comes from their isolation. Japan's population has only grown, but the island remains the same size (obviously). The traditions of people living in such tight quarters must accomodate for the average frustrations it causes or else there would be rioting and fighting non-stop. This means that forcing politeness (even when insincere) is a way to circumvent problems before they happen.
