Is it hard to become an idol in japan?

it is very hard even for a Japanese, let alone a foreigner. Foreigners do appear in variety shows though, as a stepping stone into becoming an idol. Or they are pretty good singers. But overall, foreigners are very rare in Japanese show business.

E.g. of foreign bands that I can think of is Monkey Majik, but only 2 of their band members are from Canada.
