Cost of living in Japan?

Question:

How is the cost of living in japan? (Like living expenses, etc.)

I know living in Japan can be more expensive but I want to know more

Thank you

Answer:

If you don't want to live extravagantly and a small apartment would tide you over, then you could probably make it out just fine on about 250,000 yen to 300,000 yen a month. (roughly 2,500 to 3,000 USD). This of course, depends on where you live. A rural city will be much easier as the price is cheaper. Tokyo or other popular urban cities will cost more.

If you make 250,000 yen a month, after taxes you should have about 220,500 yen left. (For a teacher anyway).

Housing will cost about 70,000 yen a month, on the more expensive end.

Japan gets very hot and humid in the summer and quite cold in the winter. You'll be using a lot of heating/air conditioning and your electricity bill will vary greatly depending on the month and how frugal you are in this area because of it. Expect about 20,000 yen a month for electricity and water...but be aware that it really does vary a LOT...
In case you didn't know: In Japan, driers arent very common, so you'll be saving money by air drying clothing if you don't buy a drier.

For eating, if you eat like the locals and you don't eat out often, you can survive on about 50,000 yen a month. Western diets will be expensive to imitate. If you're crafty, you can squeeze your personal care items into this budget as well.

Travelling in Japan also costs money. You might look at about 10,000 yen a month for using trains, etc. If you have a car, it'll be more.

This is a pretty rough guide, but I hope it helps you some!
This guide leaves you roughly 60,000 yen left over for whatever else you would want or need. Keep in mind though, this 60,000 yen is also for 'wiggle room', for if you happen to have a really high bill somewhere along the line or something.
But please do some more research, this is only a rough guide to give you an idea. It may be way different depending on where you live!
