"Pray for Japan" How does that statement have value in a country of mostly atheists/non-Christians?

Question:

You see it on everyone's facebook profiles. Majority of the people there are not Christian and some are atheist. How does it have value when they don't believe it and why is it a popular statement? How did this become a popular statement especially amongst Japanese and Chinese people themselves when they don't believe in the religion in the first place?

Answer:

I understand what you mean, it's kind of weird. But I guess it's moreso people asking for spiritual support rather than religious support and that's what Japanese people believe in, the spirit.
