Reserved or Non-reserved Shinkansen?

Question:

Reserve or non-reserved seat?
Hi, so I'm going to Kyoto--> Tokyo and back in August 5. I wonder if I should have a reserved seat or non-reserved seat.

I'm thinking that if I have a non-reserved seat, even if I miss the train, I can just hop on the next one. But if I reserve, once I miss it, I'm screwed.

However, I think around this date would be Obon...

but...non-reserved is cheaper! :(

Answer:

I recommend you to reserve a seat.
Because Nozomi has fewer non-reserved seats than reserved seats.
And you if you miss the train, you can get a non-reserved seat without additional fare.

If you want cheaper seat, you can use Hikari or Kodama, slower and cheaper services of Shinkansen.
