Answer:
Some people will try to say that "It happens in other countries, too." This is true. I would also like to add that there is still a big market for porn on DVD, that you have to buy in the real world, as opposed to the USA, where it's been internet-dominated for some time now. Americans get ashamed going to rent a porn from a video or a dirty book shop on the bad side of town. The Japanese will go to the store on a sunday morning and buy porn in front of people shopping with their kids.
We Americans are Puritans except for the fact we like drinking and sex. They are still seen as bad, but that doesn't stop us from doing them. This produces a dichotomy that leads to shame and addiction in some people. The Japanese don't really have so much of a stigma attached to drinking, sex, nudity, etc.
